In the American League, the Philadelphia Athletics were yearly contenders and were almost always runners up to the pennant winners since 1902 until last season. The Athletics hoped that this was an aberation but the bottom continued to drop out as they finished last with a 63-91 record, their worse since their debut in 1901. The Boston Red Sox, however, were once again the cream of the crop for the third season in a row as they dominated throughout the season and clinched the title with a couple of weeks remaining. The team was led by the only 20-game winners in the league, Fred Anderson (20-9, 2.17 ERA) and the AL's Outstanding Pitcher, Dutch Leonard (22-7, 2.19 ERA). The offensive attack was led by "The Grey Eagle", Tris Speaker (.368-0-76), the AL's Outstanding Hitter. Chicago finished in 2nd place, 17 games out, with Edd Roush (.294-0-64), Buck Weaver (.291-1-57) and Jack Fournier (.291-6-64) leading the attack. The Yankees ended the season in 3rd place, 19 games behind, thanks to the hitting Benny Kauff (.332-12-85) again, with Marty McHale leading the mound staff with 17 wins coming out of the pen.
In the National League, the Brooklyn Robins were looking to repeat as title winners. They were in a three-way race all season long with both the St. Louis Cardinals and the surprising Boston Braves. The Robins held a slight lead heading into the final week of the season and a quick burst allowed them to clinch the NL pennant with only three games remaining. The hitting attack was led by Jake Daubert (.318-5-97) and the league's Outstanding Hitter, Ty Cobb (.329-2-80). On the mound, Brooklyn was led by Mordecai Brown (19-11, 2.42 ERA) and the NL's Outstanding Pitcher, Elmer Knetzer (21-12, 2.27 ERA), the NL's only 20-game winner. The Cardinals finished in 2nd place, only a single game behind, as they had five pitchers with 14+wins, including the NL's Rookie of the Year, Wheezer Dell (15-13, 2.95 ERA) while Eddie Collins (.311-4-52) and Rogers Hornsby (.266-5-81) led the hitting attack. Joe Connolly (.299-4-66) and free agent signee Bill Hinchman (.295-6-64) led the Boston Braves to a 3rd place finish, 4 games behind the Robins. Bill James and Ed Reulbach each won 17 games to lead the mound staff.
In a rematch from last season's World Series, the Series was much closer but the results were the same as Art Wilson broke a game #7 three-all tie with a home run in the top of the 9th to allow the Robins to repeat as world champions.
