Panthers shoot lights out, dominate Austin Peay

Charleston, IL - The Panthers rebounded nicely from the disappointing loss to Boston College by dominating Austin Peay while shooting 54% from the field, en route to a 83-70 win. It wasn't even that close, the Panthers led by 20 most of the 2nd half.

EIU's defense frustrated Drake Reed, he shot just 4 of 14 from the field for 8 points. While the Panthers shot a season best 12 of 19 from three point range with Romain Martin going 5/8 and Mike Robinson going 4/8.

Up next the Panthers head to Tennessee State (3-3, 0-0) for another conference game.

      National Signing Day

      Panthers lose Troutman

High school senior point guard Gilbert Troutman has committed to Morehead State. Troutman looked like a lock for Eastern Illinois but coach Donnie Tyndall came in late and swooped him away. This is a big blow for this year's recruiting class.

Reports are that the Panthers will now be focusing in on 5'10" point guard from Wilmington, DE named Sid Bey. Bey is Mr. Basketball in Delaware, he is ranked #222 overall. Bey has no offers at the moment, but is getting interest from Delaware, Rider, Lehigh, American, and Howard.

The Panthers are also looking heavily at Reyshawn Callans, a 6'1" 170 lb point guard from Naperville, IL. Callans is ranked #376 nationally, he has no offers but is receiving interest from Western Michigan, Notre Dame, DePaul, Miami (OH), Purdue, and others.

Tough loss losing out on Troutman.

I just went through the same thing at UC Davis. The #1 Overall/#1 PG 6'4 Preston West out of Billings Montana picked DePaul (the school I almost left for last year) over coming to UC Davis.

Most frustrating part is Morehead State isn't doing good this year and their coaching staff is a lot worse than ours with regards to charisma. Their best is D+. They got a guy we were high on last year too.

Oh well, I think Callans or Bey might be a lot better anyway.

Panthers get sloppy late, get blown out

Nashville, TN - There aren't many teams in the country that could over come their starting backcourt shooting 9 of 29 from the field and the Panthers are one of them who can't. Romain Martin and Mike Robinson both struggled on the night, while the rest of the team shot 14 of 22.

The Tigers controlled the game after the first 10 minutes and the Panthers never really threatened, the lead was cut to 8 with just over 2 minutes to play but then the Tigers picked it up a notch on both ends of the court.

EIU will get a shot at revenge in a few weeks in what has been a chippy series the last two seasons. The Panthers did not appreciate Tennessee State star Bruce Price's three point shot at the buzzer. Coach Lewis said "he won't get my vote for first team OVC or even second team for that matter.""

Up next for EIU is a road trip to Morehead State (3-4).

Big second half leads to EIU win

Morehead, KY - The Panthers trailed this one 34-30 heading into halftime but went to the line 20 times in the 2nd half, hitting on 18 of them. That led to a 47-31 margin in the 2nd half and a much needed conference win on the road.

EIU had 4 in double figures on the night led by Romain Martin with 25 points, he was 6 of 11 from the field, 3 of 6 from 3-point land, and 10 of 11 from the free throw line. Hopefully he has broken out of his shooting funk.

Up next the Panthers head to Gainesville, FL to take on the Florida Gators (5-4) who are loaded but struggling with team chemistry so far this season. They were ranked #11 in the Preseason Poll.

                      Gators pound the Panthers

Gainesville, FL - The Florida Gators (8-4) put on quite the offensive show against Eastern Illinois (5-4), as 5 Gators scored in double figures and three more added 8 or more. The Gators rolled to a 91-58 win, led by sixth man Walter Hodge with 14 points and 7 assists.

The Panthers struggled to stop Florida as they seemed to score at will with any number of weapons, including last year's #2 overall ranked recruit Shane Gunn. Gunn had 11 points and 5 assists.

Up next the Panthers head to Maryland (6-3) to take on the Terrapins, led by Greivis Vasquez (14.6 ppg, 4.9 rpg, 4.3 apg) and super freshman Dupree Bell (17.2 ppg, 4.4 rpg).

Terps too much in 2nd half

College Park, MD - The Maryland Terrapins (8-3) overcome a slow start to knock off the Eastern Illinois Panthers (5-5) by the score of 86-71. The Panthers were able to build an eight point lead in the first half before the Terrapins started to chip away and cut the lead to 31-30 heading into halftime.

The second half was all Maryland, as they cruised to victory led by super freshman Dupree Bell. Bell had 22 points on the night, he could score from almost anywhere on the court it seemed.

Up next the Panthers host Jacksonville State (1-7). The Gamecocks are led by point guard J.J. Wesley (12.3 ppg).

Ouch tough pair of losses there, 5-5 is still pretty good. Atleast you're at .500

5-5 is not bad at all starting out with Eastern Illinois.

Thanks Gents, I'm certainly pleased but we've got a lot of work to do. Having a senior PG seems to go a long way and our next 5 games are winnable so hopefully we can jump out to an early lead in conference play.
