Starting out 10-5 would be quite the accomplishment, even if you can just get a winning record this first season it would be impressing. Good luck this season

Strong defensive performance keys win for Panthers

Charleston, IL - The Eastern Illinois Panthers (6-5) survived a slow start to knock of the Jacksonville State Gamecocks (1-10) by a score of 71-53. The Gamecocks raced out to an early 8 point lead by dominating the paint on both ends of the court but when Amadou Mbodji picked up his 2nd foul momentum swung in the Panthers favor. EIU was able to go into halftime with the game tied at 31.

Less than 1 minute into the 2nd half and Mbodji picked up his third foul, freeing up the middle for the Panthers offense is limited the Gamecocks offensive options. The result, a decisive 40-22 margin in the Panthers favor and a +15 rebounding margin on the night.

The Panthers were led by freshman Dave Armstrong with 14 points and 9 rebounds.

Up next for EIU is Samford (3-7), the Bulldogs are led by PF Matthew Friday (8.3 ppg, 4.7 rpg).

It's always good to see your team shut down an opponent. Plus, you didn't play a bad game offensively either.

Panthers fall short in frantic finish

Birmingham, AL - The Samford Bulldogs (4-7) are able to withstand a furious comeback attempt by the Eastern Illinois Panthers (6-6) to hold on to a 72-67 victory.

It was a tale of two halves, both teams struggled from the field in the first half with Samford leading 26-22 at halftime. However, both teams found their offensive easy button in the 2nd half with Samford winning the 2nd half 46-45.

Romain Martin led the way for the Panthers with a career high 35 points, but it took him 32 shots to do it. He was 15 of 32 from the field and 5 of 14 from deep. Martin started the game 2 of 11 from the field before catching fire in the 2nd half.

Up next for the Panthers is Eastern Kentucky (4-7). The Colonels are led by senior SF Mike Rose (23 ppg, 4.5 rpg).

            7/22 3pt Ouch.

Looks like Armstrong is becoming more involved since the move to SF. He has my vote for OVC FOY.

Yes sir, we were very efficient on offense once Mbodji got in foul trouble.

We settled for way too many 3s against their zone.

Armstrong is really coming around, he is still getting most of his playing time at PF but still getting some time at SF. He is averaging 9 pts and 6 reb on the season, after a very slow start. He should be a lock for FOY.

All around effort gives Panthers win

Charleston, IL, - The Panthers improved their conference record to 4-2 and 7-6 overall with a 74-59 win over Eastern Kentucky (4-8, 2-4).

The Panthers made their first 7 shots of the game but were unable to pull away since the Colonels matched them for the most part. Neither team could find any separation in the first half before the Panthers pulled away in the second. Partly due to the Colonels shooting a lousy 7 of 16 from the free throw line.

EIU was led by Romain Martin with 23 points. Worth note was Lionel Barro's performance, he had 9 points, 9 rebounds, and 3 assists.

Up next the Panthers head to Tennessee Tech (5-6, 3-2), Tech is led by senior center Daniel Northern (8.9 ppg, 7.6 rpg, 1.7 bpg).

Ironically I've been traveling for work this week in OVC country, stayed in Cookeville (TN) last night and drove through Jacksonsville (AL) today. Time to fire this bad boy up again when I get back home.

                                Panthers Recruiting Update

After losing out on our #1 target we've rethought our recruiting strategy. We currently have offers out to the following:

DeAnthony Parkinson remains on the list of offered players, he currently has no other offers.

Coach Lewis has extended new offers out to Reyshawn Collins and R. Berry. Collins is a 6'1" point guard from nearby Naperville, IL. The same hometown as current point guard Mike Robinson, Collins is has good skills and plays very good defense. He is being recruited by Western Michigan and Miami (OH) but EIU is the only team to offer at this point.

Berry is a JUCO shooting guard from Wisconsin, he is a good shooter that would be a nice compliment to Martin. He is being recruited by Illinois State, Bradley, and Stony Brook but EIU is the only offer so far. Both recruits are rated 3-star.
