    Lets talk Defense!

i'm a defense lover, theres nothing i'd rather do more than win a grind it out game 10-7. so i want to post my defense and invite you guys to discuss, critique, and post your own defense. i just made a team today now with 8 defense and 3 offense. my defense is as follows:

    G- Night Train Lane
    G- Reggie White
    S- Lem Barney
    S- Too Tall Jones
    B- Nolan Cromwell
    B- William Perry
    B- Brad Van Pelt
    B- Ken Norton Jr.

defense will shut down ANY passing attack... right now unfortunately i'm playing the Rustlers in my season opener and Paul Hornung is tearing me a new one, as he always does

i do custom playbooks for all my teams, honestly though with this team i'm likely just going to play man coverage 90 percent of the time, i have another team to with a great defense anchored by willie brown, i'll post that defense next time i turn the game on, lol honestly i like creating teams better than i like playin with them i've got like 8 teams all like 3-4 games into a season and then just create more teams

You don't need to waste a gold on a Dlineman. Clyde Simmons is a steal as a bronze.

Replace White with Derrick Thomas and Brad Van Pelt with Simmons.

Your D right now would get eaten alive by the run.

Good luck and wise choice in continuing to play the greatest Football sim to date.

I created a 85 Bears team with 8 legends on Defense. I had McMahon, Payton, and Gaunt on offense. Moving the ball was rough with only A gold Rd and bronze QB and WR. Defense was shut down and fun though.

Just put double teams on certain receivers and such. For instance:

            Come out in a cover-2 man-coverage

Audible your FS to double the wide receiver to the left

Audible your SS to double the WR to the right'

Audible your LB on the FB to guard the TE

Leave the LB on the HB alone

By doing this you've doubled everyone on the field, accept for the HB who has single coverage, and the FB who is free (but he's a minor threat anyways).

            yup..sure sounds *sim* to me

I'm not going to do that because it's common knowledge. What the guy is basically doing is Cover 2 man with safety help over the two WR's and doubling the TE. All you haved to do to beat it is a) run the ball (really no safety support on the run), pass it to your HB or slot reciever, or run with your QB since nobody is covering him.

do we have to get into an argument about sim/not sim here? if so can a mod just close this thread?

i just wanted to chat about some of the top defenses we've all created that we love to play with, and constructive criticism to help that defense become better

The best defense in this game is a good pass rush.

If you're using legends, there are a ton of good DEs and DTs at the bronze tier.

Only thing I don't really like about defense in this game is that the big hits are way too hard to pull off due to the control scheme.

But the momentum and physics of defense are really well done. Better than any other football game not named Backbreaker, for sure.

The best defensive combo that I have personally used online when I played this game was....

Gold - Rod Woodson - CB moved him to Strong Safety
Gold - Willie Wood - FS

Silver - Ed Too Tall Jones - DE
                        Silver - Offense
                        Silver - Offense

Bronze - Harvey Martin - DE
Bronze - Chris Spielman - ILB
Bronze - Albert Lewis - CB
                        Bronze - Offense
                        Bronze - Offense
                        Bronze - Offense

I routinely shut people down with this team and scored alot of points from the defensive end with picks and returns for touchdowns.

personally, i've had more success using Gold CB's rather then Gold Safeties... also i love Harvey Martin- just put him on a team as a 3-4 OLB... how does Spielman work for you? if i go with a bronze MLB i always go with... man can't think of his name... the guy with leadership and signal stealer...

I don't like wasting picks on Gold corners as much as a safety. I find High level corners can be beat by lesser receivers to often and would rather just have excellent help over the top. Also on running plays the corners are often out of the play early thus leaving the secondary open for big runs.

I have found Spielman to be the one of the best MLB I have used in this game. He is explosive to the ball and does a great job at pursuing the ball whether it be a run or a pass.

With this team I used a 3-4 defense but kept Martin as a RDE. As a bronze he is the cheapest sackmaster in the game and does a great job at giving pressure right up the middle. I love how he and To Tall work together. Jones has great games when I team him up with Martin.

The linebacker you are probably talking about is Studwell maybe??

good call with studwell. i love to use willie brown at Corner, he is LOCK-DOWN... BUT... i am using sliders to make it a much more defensive game, so i don't know how that affects it, but a bronze or silver WR will only get 1-5 catches against him in a game played with 12 minute quarters... also i'm doing a season currently 7-2 and Willie Brown has 5 interceptions, among the league leaders (might be leading the league)

edit: although i have definitely noticed some trouble stopping long runs
