Player Progression In Franchise Mode.
Do players actually progress depending on how a player performs? Or is it still fixed? I haven't bought a Madden game since I think 08 because of this reason..Tags: None -
Re: Player Progression In Franchise Mode.
But it has had a very marginal affect since the addition of potential, that's the problem. If you run for 2500 yards with a guy with C potential he'll improve by maybe 1 or 2 points where A potential guy runs for 500 and improves by 5 points.
I highly doubt this has been addressed.Comment

Well it wouldn't be "addressed" because it isn't a problem. But it has had a very marginal affect since the addition of potential, that's the problem. Re: Player Progression In Franchise Mode.
If a running back with C potential is running for 2500 yards a season in your games then he's probably runnng behind an Offensive Line consisting of the second coming of Bruce Mathews, John Hannah, Mike Webster & Gary Zimmerman.
Or more likely your sliders are wrong.
Either way he doesn't become a significantly better player. So the potential rating is fine and doesn't need to "fixed".What would Blackie Lawless do?Comment

Re: Player Progression In Franchise Mode.
I don't think an issue lies in how the players ratings progress, but rather there's an issue with potential ratings that certain players have. I mean should a player who's overall is 95+ and is on the back-end of his career (Urlacher as an example) still have an A potential? The rating should change throughout the players career to eventually bring the players rating down (marginally) at the end of their career.PSN:Xplisit21

Keep it civil guys...
But I will say , that I don't know how they balance performance vs. hard coded potential. I never noticed anything too horribly wrong last year, although I think regression should be tweakedComment

If a player runs for 2500 yards then why does he need a higher rating? To run for 4000 the next season? But it has had a very marginal affect since the addition of potential, that's the problem. If you run for 2500 yards with a guy with C potential he'll improve by maybe 1 or 2 points where A potential guy runs for 500 and improves by 5 points.

Re: Player Progression In Franchise Mode.
No, maybe his overall can come up or something.
Because if he gets released into free agency, the CPU is too dumb to sign a player that ran for 2500 yards because he has a low rating. Completely unrealistic. A hall of fame season goes by the wayside in Madden, regardless of how great the o-line is.
Besides, potential is completely subjective.
Maybe if they fix the franchise mode AI where the CPU actually signs a player and starts him because of his previous success (i.e., Matt Cassel), rather than some presorted potential or overall rating. (I know this is not a progression thing, but this would help alleviate the progression discussion.)
And, if a player is benched all season and goes up 4 points at the end, is that not ridiculous?Comment

Well if you are arguing for a perceived value rating that is a different matter. I agree with that. Yes the 2,500 yard rushing back should be able to get a lot in Free Agency. It would be great if EA could introduce such a value. No, maybe his overall can come up or something.

The highly regarded Football Manager (Soccer) Series has had a perceived rating score for years. Its great. It means you might have the next Ronaldo or Pele in your squad, but until they produce on the pitch their value to the outside world remains low. It works in reverse as well for overrated veteran players who have actually regressed but still command high wages/transfer fees.
The NFL is littered with GM's who overpaid for players on the back of high performance seasons only to discover that having high stats does not mean a player is really that good.
Just don't confuse perceived trade value/salary expectations with Madden's OVR ratings which actually affect on field performance. Which is a mistake many here make I'm afraid. Its a shame that Madden's AI logic uses the OVR ratings to make trade/salary decisions. It ends up confusing people it seems.
As for your last remark regarding progressing despite being benched we must return once again to Messrs Aaron Rodgers and Steve Young. Yes a player can progress while on the benches. Something a stats based performance progression system can take no account of.Last edited by British Bronco; 08-06-2010, 12:37 PM.What would Blackie Lawless do?Comment

Re: Player Progression In Franchise Mode.
I tend to agree that performance SHOULD impact progression. Lets use Miles Austin as an example. He had poor ratings and would have been considered poor potential going into last year. Roy Williams gets hurt he gets a chance and all of a sudden in this years madden he has a good potential and good ratings.
What has changed in 1 year? We know who he is now. He got into a game and performed! In madden you should be able to take late round picks and make them stars by giving them OPPORTUNITIES.
P.S. I also agree with the notion of perfomance is not the only indicator of progression. But, It should count. It does in real life.
Success = "Opportunity" + preparationComment
