Preds Can't Solve Lehtonen

The Nashville Predators travel to Dallas, Texas to take on the new look Dallas Stars. Both teams are lacking in the defensive aspect of the game, but Nashville was the first to show it. Loui Eriksson scored the first goal of the game midway through the first on a one-timer from Mike Ribeiro. Eriksson was left wide open to the left of Rinne. Rinne had no chance at the shot. 1-0 Dallas. Dallas would continue to pepper Rinne throughout the first, but Rinne stood tall. After the first it was still 1-0 Dallas.

In the second Dallas came out strong once again and skated all over the Preds. The Predators didn't register a shot in the period until the 7 minute mark. Their first shot came after Mike Modano tallied his first goal of the 2009 campaign. Once again a Star forward was alone in the slot. Another defensive laspe, another one-timer, and another goal. It was now 2-0 and the Preds had shown no will to try and battle back before the goal. Allowing that 2nd goal seemed to wake the Preds up because they were able to net a goal of their own just a minute later as Sullivan took a beautiful pass from Dumont and he buried until Lehtonen's glove to make it a 2-1 game. The Preds had new life until the 12:32 mark. When once again Eriksson would be open in the slot. He took a pass from Steve Ott and he deked Suter out of his skates and walked in on Rinne and beat him 5-Hole. 3-1 Stars was the score going into the 3rd.

The Predators were in trouble early as Dan Hamhuis took an interference penalty in front of his own net putting the Stars on an early 3rd period powerplay. Pavol Demitra was able to capitalize on the PP and sneak one past Rinne just over his blocker making it 4-1 Stars. The Preds tried everything they could to beat Lehtonen, but he was on his game in this one. The Preds seemed to have hope at the 7:11 mark when the ref put his arm up for a delayed penalty against the Stars, but as they were setting the play up in the zone with the extra man Sullivan tripped Ott and cancelled out the powerplay for Nashville and instead caused a 4 on 4 for the next 2 minutes. Both teams would have chances in the rest of the period but in the end it was the Stars that walked away with a 4-1 win on the shoulders of Lehtonen's 16 saves and Eriksson's 2 goals.
