Playing off-ball defence on occasion is fine, but when you're constantly switching to avoid having to play defence it's pathetic.

I define cheese as abusing gameplay exploits and glitches. I wouldn't consider off-ball D cheese.

            Re: Is off-ball defense cheese?

I do enjoy writing essays, so I will discuss this controversial topic. I always play on the ball defense. I love getting a stop with the man that I am controlling. I stopped playing against other Users years ago, but when I did, and if I ever went back to doing so, I would want the player I'm playing against to play on the ball defense too, but wouldn't consider him a cheeser if he didn't.

In the past, the CPU controlled teammates of a User on offense have not been dynamic enough to take advantage of the freelancing/erratic defense of the User who was playing off the ball D. Therefore that User never got burned at a rate proportional to the amount of bad defense decisions he made. He could double team, steal spam, paint clog, and other stuff without paying for it.

So I wouldn't call that User a cheeser, per se, even though he was taking advantage of the defects of the game A.I. I put more onus on the development team to create sharper A.I. teammates, thus making that off the ball defense playing User have to honor his man realistically.

Do this today: Instead of $%*#!@& on a game you're not going to play or movie you're not going to watch, say something good about a piece of media you're excited about.

Do the same thing tomorrow. And the next. Now do it forever.

              No.

I like to be able to control my whole defense, not just whoever is guarding the ball-carrier. When the AI makes mistakes, I want to be able to correct them. And when I know you're going to pass it to someone, I want to be able to anticipate that. And when I know you're going to drive at the hoop, I want to be able to be there to contest your shot or draw a charge.

I don't see what the competitive community's obsession with on-ball defense is, except perhaps they only see the game as an opportunity to show off their stick skills.

If i'm playin online then i'm not gonna switch my player to the ball carrier everytime because thats just a way for people to take advantage of the lag. I play defense with whoever i scored/shot with the previous possession.

no it's not cheese...sometimes the your AI teammates are stupid on defense, and you have to swith around to keep them where they should be.

To me, it's not cheese because its not an exploit. It's different than someone calling a double team(which was imbalanced in 2K9 and maybe last year) on every possession. Off the ball defense is a part of basketball, like the pick and roll. It's strategy not cheese. Some guys feel like anything that is repeatedly successful against them is cheap. Even if a guy pick and rolls every time up court, the onus is on the defense to adjust. Every strategy leaves some hole(and off the ball D can leave holes), none is foolproof, so it can't be cheese to me.

Thats how I look at it. In one game against the Cavs I gave up close to 50 points in the paint to bigs off passes while I was doing a decent job guarding James onball. After that I went back to adjusting on the fly and using the player that best helps the defense onball or off.

It's not cheese as long as you're not trying to exploit something. If you happen to suck on the sticks and can't play on-ball D then whatever, play off-ball.

no it's not a cheese sometimes u may need to put ur help defender in the right position, Because the AI don't always help in time and is not good at protecting the basket once u get beat off dribble(mostly online).

I still don't understand why some consider it cheese. Frankly, if you play off ball, i try to expose you by running pays to free your man or bait you to leave him. If you roam like the guys that TRY to cheese do, then you pay. Otherwise, if there is some exploit, then VC should address it. I don't think it's cheese at all. If it were, then so is any form of player lock.
