    Marlins/Nationals Brawl

WOW.. Just saw this. Did anyone else see it? I mean, granted, it was between the Marlins and Nationals, so I know nobody saw it in person But still. Nyjer Morgan charged the mound, threw a punch, and then got grade A clotheslined.

They threw at him because he stole 2nd and then 3rd while the team was down 11 runs. Said it's an "unwritten rule" to not steal when you're down that many runs as it's selfish and disrespectful to the game? What on earth? You better bet that if my team is down, I'll be running and doing what I can to get them back in the game too. It's never over until it's over in baseball. So you're supposed to lay down and let the other team roll?

Not condoning Nyjer's actions by any means, but that's a dumb reason to throw at a guy. And all of this comes after Nyjer's actions of running over the catcher last night, and the game before, as well as throwing the ball at the fan. Wow. Class act.

    Re: Marlins/Nationals Brawl

Nyjer Morgan is now one of my favorite players in baseball. To use a hockey term, every team could use a Sean Avery type of player. Nevertheless, If I was hit by a pitch, which I thought was intentional, I would steal 2nd, 3rd, and probably even try to swipe home as well, and run over the catcher again in the process. It was only the 4th inning, they were down by 11, yes, but the final score was 15-10, so if their pitching had held them down, they would have had a chance to win in the end.

Regardless, Morgan took it like a man the 1st time he was hit in the 4th for running over the catcher the day before, and he had to of known it was intentional. Then you go on to steal 2 bases because you're mad, then proceed to get hit again in the 6th for doing so? You bet your *** I would charge the mound and if it were me, I probably would have thrown the ball at the pitcher before charging. Plus I've never heard of such an un-writen rule. I've heard of not stealing while UP by 10, or not bunting to break up a no-no.

I watched this over at Deadspin and I kinda scratched my head for a second cause I swore I saw Pat Listasch jump on Volstad. Then they slowed it down, and sure enough, he did. That may be the first time in a long time I've seen a coach start brawling with a player like that

I don't prefer mound charging stuff, but Volstad had no reason to throw at Morgan, and I believe Morgan had every right to charge at him. Both will be easily suspended, but I think they need to look into Volstad not only throwing at Morgan intentionally the first time, but a second time? I could see if it got away on one of them, or both. But come on man. You're up by 10+ runs and you throw at somebody intentionally? Where's your baseball rules at, because if I'm losing of course I'm going to try to do everything I can to win.

If it was the other way around it'd be different, but it wasn't. Volstad is just a dumb a-hole, IMO.

Morgan is probably going to sit for a while after this latest incident, In the last 10 days Morgan has hit a fan with a ball thrown into the stands, unnecessarily collided with Cardinals C Bryan Anderson when Anderson was more than a foot off the plate, crashing into Brett Hayes and seperating his shoulder (be it clean play or dirty i cannot say) and now not for charging the mound because he was protecting himself after being hit a second time but for the hand jestures pointing at the fans as he was escorted off the field.

He had already appealed a 7 game suspension for the ball incident-zero chance that gets reduced and now will face a lengthy suspension for tonight. Don't be surprised if this was the last time we see Morgan in a Nationals uniform.

Morgan wasn't actually HIT the second time, but was thrown AT.

I as well have never heard of the unwritten rule while DOWN by a bunch. It may be seen as unsportsmanlike and unnecessarily dangerous if UP by a bunch, though.

If Morgan sits because of this fight, it will be due to a suspension by the league, NOT because the manager will bench him. And I really doubt tonight's fight will be a reason for Morgan not returning to Washington. In an interview after the game, the Nationals manager said that Morgan took the first beaning like a pro (knowing he deserved it, even being intentional), but it was unnecessary for Volstad to throw at him again for stealing second and third. He wasn't upset at all about Morgan rushing the mound.

So, about the fight itself, I think it was awesome the clothesline Gaby Sanchez landed on Morgan. Then the fact that, other than the third base coach attacking Volstad, the entire Marlins team was beating on Morgan before the rest of the Nationals got there.

Nyjer Morgan is now tops in my book, and while I can't stand the Nationals, I have more respect for the manager for backing his player in a jacked up situation.

Speaking as a Nationals fan, this was just another incident for Nyjer in a mounting pile of evidence that speaks to him not being back next year.

              - He starter the year by having the temper tantrum in CF where he threw his glove on the ground as Adam Jones ran the bases for an inside the park HR.

              - He's publicly bitched at Riggleman for moving him to the 8 hole in the lineup because he was no longer hitting.

              - The Anderson incident.

              - The Hayes incident

              - Tonight

We all loved him last year because he was fun, and had a great attitude. This year, something switched. A lot of people are speculating that he's got an addiction of some sort. Some are saying it goes back to when he broke his wrist last year. A lot of Nats fans on the message boards think he might be addicted to pain pills or something as his character and attitude is 180 degrees what it was last year. Also, he might be bi-polar... but once again, pure speculation by the fans.

My opinion? I'm guessing he gets non-tendered this winter.

Me too. I don't know anything about him except what I just saw on SportsCenter, but I love the fire. If he gets suspended and that punk *** pitcher doesn't then something is wrong. I love the fact that when he got the first time, he promptly stole two bases, and tagged up on a shallow fly ball.

Absolutely agree with this. Whether he was right or wrong in this latest incident matters little. The guy is a lightning rod right now and it's best to let him cool off a bit before he sees the field again. Has this all happened in one week? What a crazy week for the kid.

I don't think he is a bad guy and in some ways I really like the way he plays the game. Swiping those two bags after getting plunked is the perfect response. But the Cards incident was flat out dirty and it's looking like he is out to intentionally hurt people, whether it's true or not

Since when is a team supposed to roll over when they are DOWN in a game!!?? The "unwritten rule" is that you don't steal when you're UP 11 runs. If the team isn't going to cover the bases properly and I'm a fast guy, you bet your *** I'm taking 2nd and 3rd. Especially after you hit me. I mean it lead to a run, and isn't that the point of the game - to try and score runs?

That was such a cheap shot by the guy that ran in too. Let Volstad try to go Ryan-Ventura on hjm. He just blind-sided Morgan with a sucker punch/clothesline. Tackle the guy, don't go for the blind-side head shot.

yeah from what I've seen from his this year he's been a little off.

Usually I think it's silly when grown guys start fighting like this but this time I don't have a problem with Morgan charging the mound. The Fish got their shot in him earlier and made them pay for it by stealing, I thought that was hilarious and the right way to handle the situation. It was the Marlins that brought this fight on by going at him again, that's something the Marlins commentary in those vids just didn't get. Sanchez sure got a good shot in on Morgan with that clothesline though.

but Volstad had no reason to throw at Morgan
After he hit him the first time, he stole second and third. That was just asking for it, and Nyjer knew it, that's why he did it. This whole thing is hilarious, I don't really feel either side is in the wrong. Nyjer is certainly nuts though, he wanted to piss off every guy on the Marlins team and nothing more.

Say what you want about sports fights, but baseball fights are badass. In BBall you always see the players running away like little girls, it's pretty rare to ever see a pitcher throw at someone and not stand their ground (like Volstad did) afterwards. Gaby Sanchez might be the new Jason Kendall if he keeps this up.

Stealing the bases is in no way asking for it. You don't just bean somebody for steal bases or hitting homeruns. He did what he had to to score a run. If anybody was asking for it, it was the Marlins to throwing at him again "because he stole second and third". I'm glad Morgan hit him. Now every time Volstad throws AT somebody, he's going to remember last night.

On what Lintyfresh85 was saying, I wasn't saying Morgan had any chance at staying in a Nationals uniform next year, I was just saying that I doubt last night would be a reason. And that any bench time recieved from last night would be from the league, not his manager choosing to use last night as the reason.
