Re: Taking the Big East By [Red] Storm - CH2k9

Alright, for the few of you guys that are actually following, I have a question. Let's say that I win back-to-back national titles this year at St. John's, should I stay one more season and play with my coveted big man Kerry Rohde, or do I move on to another squad? And if I were to move on, would it be for the best available school or do I take another rebuilding project?

The thing is, I feel I have great sliders, but the talent on my team is just so good right now that I win almost every game. I'm leaning towards a rebuilding project, but I could also add in a wrinkle where Rohde demands a release of his scholarship at SJU to follow Coach Roberts to his new school.

Let me know what you guys think!

I think that you should try and go after a different job. You have had a great run at St. Johns, and a big part of that was Sherman Richards. He is going to be gone, so I think you should follow him out. I like that idea of having Rhode follow you. BTW, good look in for the rest of the Tourney.
      My Teams
      CFB- Boise State Broncos
      MLB- New York Yankees
      CBB- Siena Saints
      NFL- Indianapolis Colts

        #4 West Virginia (24-9) vs. #1 St. John's (32-4)
        2013 NCAA Tournament: Sweet 16
        Reliant Stadium
        Houston, TX
        March 23, 2013

Two teams that know, and hate, each other so much, squared off in the South Regional Sweet 16. In their only meeting this season, the Mountaineers knocked off the Red Storm, but this is the game that really matters.

Early on, WVU was scorching hot from deep and would not allow the Red Storm to score down low. The Mountaineer press was disruptive and would not allow Sherman Richards to ignite the fast break. Trailing by double digits early, Norm Roberts made sure to get Chaun Matera the ball as he started to dominate the West Virginia bench players. After nine first half Matera points, the Red Storm had a 31-29 lead at the half.

The second half was high octane basketball with both teams moving the ball well and finishing some tough shots. As Richards, Eduardo Roller and other St. John's players tried to attack the rim, they were getting smothered by the WVU 2-3 zone. With nobody knocking down outside shots, it looked as if the reigning champs were about to go down. Then, Jerrod Richardson made his presence felt.

With three minutes remaining, St. John's trailed by four and needed a spark and fast. They dumped it down to Roller on the block, who was instantly double-teamed. A quick underhand shovel pass to Richardson beyond the arc led to a huge 3-point bucket. After a defensive stop, Richardson got the ball on the wing, shot the gap between the two defenders on his side of the zone, rose up and threw down a tomahawk dunk over Artur Novakovic, the future first rounder. Add to the embarassment that a foul was called, and Richardson was now on a personal 6-0 run to give SJU a two point lead. With a missed three leading to a long rebound, Richardson took it coast to coast for a layup, capping off his own 8-0 run, giving the Red Storm a lead they would never relinquish.

If not for Richardson's heroics late, Norm Roberts and his entire squad would be heading back home to Queens without completing their goal of back to back titles. But after this 76-72 win, they will meet Texas in the Elite Eight in what will feel like a true road game as it will be played in Houston.

I say do a rebuilding project. It would be fun to see who you can get offers from and where you end up.

              Michigan State lost

Happy to see you where able to make it past West Virginia though.

                #10 Texas (22-10) vs. #1 St. John's (33-4)
                2013 NCAA Tournament: Elite Eight
                Reliant Stadium
                Houston, TX
                March 25, 2013

Looking at the seeding of these two teams, you would think that St. John's should squander this Cinderella story with no problem. But a deeper look at what the Longhorns really have to offer shows that maybe they were indeed the favorites heading in to this one. With better ratings (98 offense, 100 defense, 99 overall) than St. John's, and four players locked in to the 1st round of the NBA Draft, Texas was no joke. Point guard Adama Fraser and shooting guard
Jackie Bro are said to be competing for the top pick in the draft and both showed that the hype is well deserved.

This game was tight throughout. The Longhorns were stroking it from deep as well as getting some easy layups off the pick and roll while the Red Storm got most of their points on the fast break as they couldn't penetrate Texas' defense. The long ball wasn't falling for St. John's and that proved to be the difference as the defending national champions would fall to the ten-seeded Longhorns to a score of 87-75. SJU had double the turnovers as Texas while scoring 21 less points from beyond the arc, both leading to the disappointing loss.

Senior co-captains Sherman Richards and Erik Domercant watched their careers end on the floor of Reliant Stadium to a powerhouse Texas team. They were obviously upset that they couldn't repeat as champions, but they know that they put this team back on the map and Queens, NY will be a place that young, elite talent will be drawn to for years to come.

Ouch tough loss against Texas, that's a real bummer.

Interesting to see Stanford win the NIT.

The first player to ever commit to play for coach Norm Roberts under the tutelage of Rizzo, Sherman Richards lived up to the hype and more. When he committed, he brought a buzz to the fan base in Queens and, much more important, a national title. He came in as a pure scorer, pouring in 15.8 points a game his freshman season en route to winning National Freshman of the Year as well as being named to any and all national and conference freshman teams.

His role as a scorer was set in stone up until his senior season where he was asked to become more of a play maker at the point guard position. He would respond wonderfully, averaging 5.2 assists per game as well as continuing to pour in 13.5 points a night. If there was ever a player to consider as a program builder, Sherman Richards was that player. He will be missed, but never forgotten.

Erik Domercant was overshadowed in his St. John's recruiting class by Sherman Richards, but he brought a steady defensive presence to the lineup. As a freshman, he averaged ten points and seven rebounds, being named a First Team All-American as well as Freshman All-Conference member. In his sophomore season, he was named a member of the First Team All-Conference. With the addition of Eduardo Roller, Domercant quietly took a seat on the bench, but still was considered a leader of the team. His presence inside the locker room will be missed as much as his production on the floor.

Very tough loss to swallow. They had a great team and should never have been seeded as a 10. They were that low because their record was something like 22-10, but they were as good as a 1 seed!
