Vernon Davis highest paid TE in History?

Saw this on the bottom line, and yep, its true.

    http://www.nfl.com/news/story/09000d...e=HP_headlines

I know the guy is good, but the richest TE contract in the history of the NFL? He seems like a guy who is gonna have the money go to his head, he got paid, so who cares now.
    NFL- Green Bay Packers
    MLB- Chicago Cubs
    NBA- Milwaukee Bucks
    NCAA- Wisconsin Badgers

    After 1 good season?

That came after a couple disappointing seasons?

Wow. Best hope that wasn't a fluke, Frisco.

Sounds eerily familiar to the Miles Austin deal, no?

I wish whomever Austin and Davis' agents are were representing me when I go to see the boss for my year end review!

In all seriousness, both deals are head scratchers to me. Miles Austin now makes more money than Randy Moss and Vernon Davis now makes more money than Antonio Gates. Personally, I'll take Moss and Gates at their current salaries over Austin and Davis at their new salaries all day long regardless of age.

I guess we can chalk it up to being an uncapped year...

I understand people may not like the deal but in all honesty, Davis turned the corner last season. He went from being a bust to a player who's been coached into reaching his full potential and becoming the face and leader of the franchise. The man always had freakish athletic ability and now he has the full repertoire of work ethic, pride, and respect, why not keep a player like that around?

I have no problem with the contract but me personally wouldn't have made him THAT big of an offer, especially after one good season.

Exactly. I'm all for giving a guy some money for a great pro-bowl type season but, not that kind of a deal after one season. Consistency must be earned and that isn't earned in one season.

Randy Moss's deal was signed a few years ago and was below market if i recall because he wanted to win the Pats.

I thought Gates' deal was a few years ago as well. The NFL has contracts go all over very quickly

To be fair on him being a "bust", he was suffering some injury problems, and San Fran was in a TERRIBLE state for a few years after he was drafted, mainly due to the Alex Smith fiasco. He wasn't exactly placed in a situation to excel, considering he's a TE. How often is it "The TE carried the team"?

That said, I don't know if I buy him being the highest paid player at his position.

True enough, but I really can't see Moss making more money than Austin in his next contract. He deserves it, but he probably won't get it, especially if he stays in New England.

I see Moss retiring before he signs another big contract, he might sign a smaller deal, 1-2 years, but his days are getting shorter.

Gates actually got a contract extension over the summer.
                          5 years, $36.175 million. $20.4 million guaranteed.

He keeps becoming the highest-paid tight end in the NFL. Vernon Davis getting doesn't bother me alone, but to see the money that Vernon Davis makes in relation to the money that Tony Gonzalez, one of the best tight ends in NFL history, has made over his career doesn't sit well with me.
