Does the On-Ball Defense Rule Still Apply in NBA 2k11

For most players that pride themselves on being Sim, people always claim that on ball defense is a cardinal rule. Arguments range from:

-I don't want to play against the CPU
-People play the lanes too much
-people play zone/illegal defense too much

I'm not a fan of this rule to begin with, but now I don't even think it's fair to use anymore if the other player is using Total Passing Control. If you have to guard the ball carrier, you're not necessarily guarding the guy who the other player is controlling.

And the ball fakes can put lane campers in line.....

I pretty much believe this rule is obsolete now.

Re: Does the On-Ball Defense Rule Still Apply in NBA 2k11

For the record I still want to play my opponent not the CPU....

I'm probably not going to use the Total Passing control lol. But also the question is will they be having all these features online. Like "off-ball control". If not this topic is dead lol

But I feel you all all your points. I really like the fake passes. That really opens the door for off-ball defense.

total control passing will not be an issue. It may not even make it online also. Things like that they leave for offline only usually

This dosen't matter because everyone has there own idea of what sim is, My idea of sim ranges from off ball d to on ball d dosen't matter the fake passing and total control makes it easier it DOSEN"T Matter! at the end of the day as long as you aren't doing frequent cheeses like scoring under the rim or whatever exploit in 2k11 IT DOSEN"T MATTER

I don't think it has anything to do with being sim, but if I wanted to play against the CPU, I would've done so.

I don't see eye to eye with those that complain about controlling defenders other than the one guarding the ball handler. That rule will get burned against someone who goes pretty deep into playcalling.

In 2K10 help defense was spotty and inefficent against basket cuts, screens, and the exploitable lead pass. It's more noticiable with lesser defensive teams. I can't blame people for how they want to play the game anymore. I'm just fortunate there's a fake pass button this season.

As long as the user can be punished for running around like a headless chicken, i wont care how someone plays D.

In the 2'ks of the past, there was no penalty for reckless roaming because you could recover on a dime, and the team defense never broke down around you...while you were freelancing.

I think that is what the 'on ball d rule' in league/sim play is intended to eliminate.

The bottom line about true sim playing is if you walk away from the game win or lose and felt like you would have watched this on TV (NBA, NFL, MLB, NHL).

Then you just played a true sim game.

                Period, bottom line.

In 2K10, you were allowed to roam using the players not controlling the ball at the time. But this was only allowed for offline modes. I am pretty sure it will be the same come 2K11.

One ball rules haven't changed in my opinion.

There are no rules on how to play defense.... does your game come with a different manual than mine or something lol

Agreed, but most sim players feel (I myself) that on ball defense is the way to truly matchup with your opponent.

I have a feeling most leagues are going to have to soften their on-ball defense rules or there will be too many close to unstoppable plays.

i think most leagues will switch to HOF actually and keep the on ball D rule

ya because I play against another person so I can be guarded by the cpu all game.....on ball defense should be mandatory.

lol. On-ball D is not the only aspect of defense.
Would you consider it cheese to control anybody but a pass rusher in Madden?
