The Ottawa Senators opened the season with a low scoring afair against division rivals, Buffalo Sabers. Craig Rivet opened the scoring for the Sabers in the final seconds of the first period, on a point shot through a screen. Ottawa was quick to respond in the second, after Vanek took a hooking penalty Sergei Gonchar evened it up on the powerplay, only 3:46 into the period. Then with 5:02 remaining in the third Nick Foligno scored the game winner off a beautiful centering pass from Mike Fisher.
