Major issue with Be a GM

In Be a GM mode, after I start a season, after the draft, I notice guys like Erik Gudbrandson (drafted by FLA) and Jeff Skinner (drafted by CAR) getting signed by teams that don't have their draft rights. I was playing as NYR, so I had the rights to Dylan McIlrath, hes 18 and needs more time in juniors, so I didnt sign him, because I would have his rights for 2 more years. Then late in the offseason, I see that Detroit has just signed Dylan to a 3 year contract.

O.o Then I take a look at the Free Agent list, and I see 2010 draftees like Brandon Gormley, Cam Fowler, and other guys who's rights are owned like Magnus Paajarvi-Svensson. Is there a way to stop this? Or am I gonna have to deal with my draftees getting stolen away from me?

Yes, it is a major issue that I have also experienced. I posted it in the Bugs/Glitches thread a couple weeks ago. I won't play BaGM until fixed. Completely ruins the mode. It happened to me in my second offseason as well. I lost my first draft class because I wanted to leave the entire class in Junior for another year, but instead they all became free agents. If not fixed I'll have to trade the game in. It was posted by someone else that they are looking into the issue. Not sure how reliable that source is though.

Wow, really? I hadn't heard of this issue. That really sucks. There's really no point then in playing BAGM. If this is the case, I think I'm done too. I've had enough. I've waited since 08 for a working franchise mode. I hope they fix it or I'm selling to the highest bidder.

IIRC, I talked to Gurn about this one way back when I had the game early. I think the bug happens when you use a custom roster and start from the draft, although I'm not certain on that part since it was a while ago. At any rate, he said it's one of the BAGM fixes they're working on for the patch.

I've been told if you start your Be a GM mode at the start of the 2010 season and not at the 2010 draft this won't be an issue.

No, both times I've started by BaGM I did NOT start with the draft and had the issue. I did however use my custom roster both times.

By custom roster, does that also include the downloaded roster you get when you play an online game?

What I did was manually put guys like Fowler, Gudbranson Gormley, Nino ect on to each of their teams respective roster and THEN start a BAGM after the draft.

This guarrantees they will be under contract with said team.

Everytime I've tried, I've started at the season (well, preseason). I used the latest roster update without any changes to it. Everytime I've skipped to the end of the season, I've run into this issue.

I don't think it's limited to how one enters Be-a-GM; I think it's a bug regardless of how the mode is started. Hopefully the bug fix will not be limited to how one starts.

Maybe I'll drop Gurn a line to see where it stands...

The thing is it didnt happen when I started at the start of the season, but then if, let's hypothetically say, I was playing as the Oilers and I wanted to sign Jordan Eberle and Magnus to play in the NHL like in real life, I cant bring those guys to the NHL, and I have to wait until the next offseason.

Also some of the rookies I signed don't appear on my NHL/AHL roster, but appear in the Contracts list, does that mean I can call them up?

Yes, this issue along with the in season progression mechanic have rendered BaGM impotent as it stands now. I have heard mods both here and at EA forums say they working on fixes for this in the patch. No disrespect to the mods from this site and EA's, but until someone who represents EA says that its getting worked on for the next patch I am still looking at it like its not getting any attention.

These two issues have broken BaGM completely and for that alone its not acceptable to have released a game that has such a broken, in a very obvious way, game mode.

Re: Major issue with Be a GM

I did a test run with BAGM, started at the season (pre), and used my custom roster. I didn't have the issue of losing any of my unsigned draft picks. They all remained in my system. I didn't notice any problems with any other teams either. Hall, for instance, did not play in the 2010 11 but, made the Edmonton team for the 2011 12 season.

I in fact thought it worked out pretty well. Parise was the only big free agent signing, and he didn't last long on the free agent market.

One thing I did notice was, there are not enough man-games lost to injuries. I think EA designed it this way because they do not have an IR list in the program. What I mean is, let's say you have 5 players out, and those 5 players represent large contracts. In order to fill those lineup spots, you would have to move players around in your system (even if temporarily) to have enough healthy players on your NHL team. Now, this creates a problem. It could put you under the cap. This would prompt the sim engine to bump up your player salaries to make you cap compliant. So when if all your injured players return, you could be over the cap, thus creating more problems. In the real NHL, they have an IR list and a LTIR (long term injured reserved) list. A player on the IR list counts against the cap, and a player on the LTIR list does not (I believe that's how it works). Since EA never put this sort of thing into BEGM, I think they kept the injuries low to avoid this sort of thing. I'm gonna go through a season and see if I can bang up a bunch of my own players to see what would happen.

So, it's not widespread...is it a system thing? I'm on the PS3 (80GB MotorStorm bundle), and I get it.

I'm thinking about dinking around with some settings and see if anything changes (where the season starts, what roster I'm using--current, draft day, default), but I can't say when I can get to it as I have a pretty busy week coming up followed by a trip to Oklahoma. Anyone else want to try?

Who knows? You'd have to get a consensus. I am on the 360 btw. I did another quick test and I retained my players.
