No More Monthly NPD Sales :(

NPD Group, the organization responsible for tracking and reporting console and game sales numbers, announced today that it will no longer be giving this information out publicly as of October 14th. People who pay for a subscription (which is costly) will still receive these numbers, but the information will no longer be available or publishable to non-subscribers.

Console sales will simply be reported in terms of how much cash they generated in total, and will not be divided by platform any longer. The top-selling games will still be ranked from one to ten, but the actual sales numbers will no longer be given out.

What this means for gamers is that the only way we're going to know how sales of a particular game or console are going is from the publishers themselves. What do you guys think, will you trust numbers if they're not coming from a third party?

It'd be like asking CBS how their fall shows are going instead of consulting the Nielson numbers. Virtually no integrity without a 3rd party.

That would be a violation of copyright law and a TOS violation. It would be like posting a Rivals.com article.

                  September NPD:

                  USA Today

                  Top 10:
                  • Halo: Reach - 3.3M
                  • Madden NFL 11
                  • Dead Rising 2
                  • NHL 11
                  • FIFA Soccer 11
                  • Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep
                  • Mafia II
                  • Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions
                  • Metroid: Other M
                  • Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2

Bungie's finale to the Halo franchise brought the back to its accustomed rarified air.

The game, a prequel to the original released in 2001, was the top-selling game on NPD's monthly sales report for September. By selling 3.3 million units, not including those sold in special bundles with Xbox 360 hardware, the latest Halo game had sales "comparable to the first month sales of both Halo 3 and Halo 2," said NPD analyst Anita Frazier.

Halo: Reach generated about $216 million in sales, said Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter. "Pretty impressive."

But Halo: Reach was not enough to boost industry sales out of a six-month swoon. Total sales of hardware and software, including PC games, were down 8% from Sept. 2009. Overall sales hit $1.22 billion, compared to $1.32 billion last September.

Hardware sales of $383 million were down 19%, compared to Sept. 2009 ($427 million). "While industry sales of new physical retail sales show a decline versus year ago, it's important to remember that there is a growing volume of content being sold digitally, or otherwise outside the traditional retail channel," Frazier said. "These numbers reflect the largest channel for hardware, software and accessories sales, but there are content sales happening elsewhere."
Greenberg: Xbox 360 was top-selling console for fourth month in a row

Greenberg elaborated in his following tweet that Microsoft sold 483,989 hardware units in September, "a 37% increase over last year." He also claimed the console is the only system with higher sales year-over-year.

                      and that's sad.

In the movie industry, we know how much a movie costs to make and how well it does at the box office.

The Wii is really falling off.

In the end though, I don't really care what a system sells anymore. I have mine, so who cares what it does from here on out. I don't look up TV sales numbers for instance.

Game sales are cool to look at just to see if games are a bust or not. So even a top 10 without numbers is fine to me.

I wasn't thinking of individuals on forums... I was speaking more about the gaming press, after a certain amount of time... Like at the end of each year, for example...

Unless they're planning on trying to keep this information away from public eyes all together...

Whatever... Who gives a freakin' crap...
