EA Sports NBA Jam Review (Wii)

I will never forget the first time I was able to experience NBA Jam Wii at an EA press event last April in NYC. As lead designer Trey Smith explained the game's motion-control scheme, my eyes were glued to the screen. Throughout that developer walkthrough I was having flashbacks to the early '90s when I would spend hours at a local arcade (and later with my Genesis) playing NBA Jam and NBA Jam TE.

However, I did not go into the event last April without trepidation. Much like many other people, I had become disillusioned with the franchise over the years while it tried to figure out what it wanted to be. And being the disillusioned soul that I was, I was also more than a bit skeptical when EA decided to reboot the franchise on the Wii.

Either way, once I was finally turned loose on the game at the press event none of that mattered anymore. Within minutes I was completely hooked on the visual style, classic gameplay and intuitive motion-control scheme. Everything I loved about Jam was back -- the frantic pace, the ridiculous moves, Tim Kitzrow and even the ridiculous rubber-band AI -- along with some cool new twists like alley-oops, spin moves and crossovers. The moment I left NYC I was dying to get more hands-on time with the game on the Wii.

I'm gonna wait for the PS3 version but it is encouraging to read the report from OS.
A million people may laugh at you, but it can take one play to STTFU! Make a believer out of the them!

Seeing that online will be included for 360/PS3, the excuse they give for not putting it on the Wii is obviously a big pile of BS.

It'll be disc released on the 360 and PS3 with more modes from the wii version but hopefully won't be sold at full price. Gamefly has the PS3 version availible for rental on Nov 16.

I mean its still just NBA JAM...Even in the arcades in the late 80s I wasn't going crazy for it. This? is the big sports title for the holiday season? NBA JAM? Not impressed. This game is classic, so no one is gonna bash it, but reminding ourselves that this was to be bonus game for people who purchased Elite 11, you can't get overly excited or review NBA JAM with any great enthusiasm. It would remind me, at least. The **** Fail of Elite 11 should be mentioned somewhere in your 360/PS3 review

Wow, EA knows how to make a fast buck. What was a free game a month ago(with ellite) will now likely be $49-$59 with no ellite. No thx!

This is such an old game though, wait a month or two and pick it up at Blockbuster or somewhere like that for $10 in the bargain bin.

Great review! I'm on the same page with you on the online issue. In my opinion, online play could've made this game one of the best sports game of 2010!
