Re: The Career of Bryan Dodge (NCAA11)

WEEK 7

(2-3) @ (3-2)

GAME PREVIEW

The Bruins enter the game coming off 2 straight wins (Oregon State and Colorado). Coach Neuhesial made a interesting decision at QB to start the year, naming JR R. Beahaut the starting QB, over RS JR K. Prince. Many figured Prince had the leg up.

Coach N. "I feel Brehaut gives us a better passing option. Kelvin makes plays with his feet and I am sure at some point will still see playing time but for now this is the direction we are going in"

WSU will start RS FR Connor Halliday at QB for the 3rd straight week, with Jeff Tuell out with a back injury, with a expected return in Week 9 vs Cal. Halliday has thrown for 1153 yds 7 TD and 4 INT so far this season.

GAME RECAP

UCLA would get on the scoreboard early as Brehaut hits T. Embree on a 7 yd TD pass, but the Cougar "D" would step up huge picking off his next 2 pass attempts. Halliday would struggle as well though failing to convert on 3rd down twice. Finally with a minute left in the Quarter WSU would get a TD pass of their own as Halliday hits M. Wilson on a 25 yd streak down the sideline (7-7)

Both teams would light up the scoreboard in the 2nd Quarter as UCLA's J. Franklin scores 2 TD's (5 yd run, 7 yd catch). WSU also get's 2 touchdowns as Halliday hit's J. Kartsetter (8 yds) and L. Mitz runs in a TD from 4 yds out. The Cougars would get huge "MO" going into the half as D. Wagner hits a 48 yd FG with 8 seconds to play (24-21)

WSU would get the ball to start the 2nd half and again it was Halliday to Kartsetter for the TD (17 yds, Karsetter's 8th TD of the year). With a minute to play in the 3rd, Brehaut would find R. Carroll on a 2 yd screen pass though as the Bruins stayed in the game (31-28)

Halliday would open the 4th Quarter with a INT, and UCLA would take advantage of it as Breahaut throws his 4th TD of the day hitting N. Rosario on a 15 yd pass as the Bruins took the lead. (35-31) Halliday would drive the Cougars down the field on their next possession, but the drive would stall forcing Coach Dodge to send out Kicker D. Wagner for a 33 yd attempt. The kick would hit the upright and bounce out as the Bruin crowd grew louder and louder. The WSU "D" would step up though and hold UCLA out of the endzone as the Bruins were forced to kick a 23 yd FG (38-31) Down by a TD, Halliday knew he would have to find a way to get his team in the endzone and with 1:32 to play Halliday would use his feet as he runs in from 3 yds out to tie the game (38-38)
Brehaut would do his best to help his team win the game in regulation, but again the Cougar "D" would force the Bruins into a long FG attempt. (52 yds). X. Woods kick had the distance but sailed left, as the game went to OT.

UCLA would win the toss in OT and elect to play Defense. Halliday would lead the team onto the field looking to guide them to the huge upset win. Instead it was G. Simone making a huge drop on 3rd down that would force Wagner to come in for the FG attempt. Still picturing his miss early, Wagner again would shank his kick, UCLA went crazy.
Not taking any chances, the Bruins would run the ball twice kicking the 35 yd FG for the win.

FINAL SCORE WSU-38 UCLA-41 OT

POST GAME COMMENTS BY COACH DODGE

"Of course it's disappointing. This team is not use to winning, so any chance you have to put a "W" on the board is a good thing. We have a tough road ahead as we take on USC next week, so it would've been good to get out of here with the win. Instead we will go back home and try and refocus. I felt like Halliday played well enough to win. It's not very often out Defense actually wins the turnover battle, so we can't blame them, they played their hearts out tonight. I guess if the blame is going to go anywhere it will go on my shoulders for not taking the chance to go for 2pt after Halliday last TD run, Wagner has struggled all year with his kicks, but thats to be expected, he has kicked in games in over 3 years as he came he as a QB not a kicker."
