Re: The Legacy of the Appalachian State Mountaineers
And... The Big House Falls
Boone, North Carolina Posted August 26, 2010.
The national consensus of this game was that Appalachian State would crumble over the national pressure. Fortunately, that was not the case. The game was well fought, and it was close until the final minutes. The Mountaineers came out stale, and the game looked to be a blowout. It looked as if Michigan was going to finally get their revenge from 2007.
At the beginning, Michigan came out firing scoring within the first 30 seconds on a beautiful three play drive. App. State then went three and out with a net of negative yardage. Maybe Jamal Jackson couldn't handle the pressure. Michigan then chewed off the clock on a beautiful drive but the Mountaineers held them to a field goal. Jamal Jackson and the Mountaineers then put on a display, scoring within minutes to cut the Wolverines lead from 10-0 to 10-7.
Starting with the 2nd quarter, the nation could tell that App. State wasn't done just yet. Running down the clock and hitting a 35 yard FG, equalizing the game 10-10. Michigan would later settle for another FG, taking the lead once again. With only two minutes left in the half, Michigan would return a fumble extending their lead 20 to 10. Jamal Jackson was injured on the play, and would not return. Appalachian State would respond quickly, with just two plays, a 49 yard pass by Deandre Presley and then an inspired 33 yard rush by Devin Moore.
With App. State's starting QB out, it did not look good. But, they had junior Deandre Presley. The first drive of the second half became the Mountaineers marque drive of the game. Driving the ball down the field on 8 plays and taking the lead 24-20.
The 4th and final quarter would follow the style of the 3rd, a defensive struggle. Neither team was able to get the ball moving. With a little over 2 minutes left in the game, Presley would find the endzone on a 13 yard rush. With the game looking as if it was over, Michigan tried to respond. The drive would be stalled by an interception by junior CB Ed Gainey, ultimately winning the game for the Mountaineers.

Post-Game Interviews: "We had them at the beginning, the defense was shutting them down and our offense was movin'. After they saw the endzone, they felt a spark of life. Goin' into half-time we should have had a 7 point lead, but coverage broke down allowing them to score before half. After they took the lead their defense shut us out. We were moving the ball, just would stall out at the 50. Hopefully we can bounce back after this loss, I'd like to play them again next year, make this an annual thing. I could see it getting big." - Rich Rodriguez
"Well what can I say, we played great. A little soft to start off, but then our line-man started blockin' and line-backers started hittin'. Really and truly we should have had the lead at half, if not for the fumble and huge return. After that I sat the team down and explained how they were only down 3, in the Big House. We had done it before and could do it again, do it to prove we belong here. And well, my team went out and put their hearts on the field and I couldn't be prouder. Hopefully Jackson will be back next Saturday, but if not we have Deandre." - Jerry Moore
Boone, North Carolina. Posted August 28, 2010. [Jamal Jackson] suffered bruised ribs late in the second quarter of the game. He will not practice Monday. We hope to have him on the field Tuesday, and get him ready for West Virginia. He is listed as Questionable.
