Is Donovan McNabb a Hall of Famer?

Earlier today on the Jim Rome show, Andy Reid called McNabb a Hall of Famer. At first, I thought 'yeah sure', but at second thought, I'm questioning it. The one obvious thing that holds him back is the lack of rings(zero), but let's break it all down.

In today's world, it's very hard to get into Canton without a Super Bowl ring unless you have superior stats, McNabb doesn't. Statistically, for his career, he's in the top 20 all time lists in passing yards, completions, and attempts. He's also 22nd on the TD's list. Season by season however, he's not that impressive. He's never had a 4,000 yard season. He's only thrown 20 or more touchdowns in a season 5 times in his 12 year career(only 1 time over 30). His career QB rating is average. His career completion % is 58.9. Consider those numbers and the era he's playing in. One argument he does have though is the lack of weapons Philly put around him in his career.

Playoff wise, he's 9-7 in his career. 1 trip to the Super Bowl. 5 trips to the NFC Championship. His stats in the Playoffs are pretty much on par with his stats in the regular season for the most part.

Awards, 6 time Pro Bowler and the 2004 NFC OPOY.

So, is he a Hall of Famer or is he just 'very good'(sort of like a Joe Theismann)? For me, he's borderline. Give him a ring and I think he's definitely in.

I would say so if he had a ring, but that sets him back so much so I say no. I think there has been enough ringless QB's that were pretty good before him that didn't make it in so I don't see it

Definitely a Hall of Famer...he's not Brady, Manning, Marino, Elway, Montana elite, but the guy was the Eagles offense for a long time. I think we forget just how bad his receivers were from around 2001-2006.

His TD to INT ratio is also the best in NFL history and he will likely finish top 10 total yards and TD's by a QB (passing and rushing).

It's hard to throw interceptions when you're constantly skipping balls at receivers' feet. For me, he's never been an elite quarterback. He is often inaccurate, has never won a Super Bowl, and is woefully bad in crunch time. He's close, but not quite for me.

Yes but it's gonna take atleast 3-5 years imo maybe longer after he's eligible

Nope. Just too many other quarterbacks were better than him during his years in the league.

No. I'd put Warner in ahead of him, for starters. Put him in the Skip Bayless, Hall of Very Good, but not Hall of Fame. Yeah he made it to 4 NFC title games, but lost in 3 of them, including 2 at home.

With all of his past injuries, and the fact that in 11 full seasons, he's only played 16 games four times, it's hard to say he's a sure bet.

No. I'd put Warner in ahead of him, for starters. Put him in the Skip Bayless, Hall of Very Good, but not Hall of Fame. Yeah he made it to 4 NFC title games, but lost in 3 of them, including 2 at home.

He went to 5 NFC title games (4 in a row from '01-'04, and then another in '08) and a Super Bowl.

I've come to the realization that, at least on message boards, there seems to never be any respect for any great players of this era. It's one thing to cite the facts, but a totally different and absurd thing to ignore what a player has accomplished. If you let fans of today tell it, everybody sucks. Brady sucks, McNabb sucks, Manning sucks, Roethlisberger sucks.

I'd rank McNabb as the Eagles best QB of all time, and that includes names like Van Brocklin, Jaworski, and Cunningham. He has one of the highest winning percentages of all time, higher than Troy Aikman's. Statistically, he's better than a few QB's already in the hall who played on far more prolific offenses with better WR's and RB's from the most recent era. His TD-INT ratio is one of the best ever. Throw in 23 GW drives. Over 3,000 yards rushing and 28 TD's, ranks as one of the best ever. 6-time Pro Bowler, and it should've been 8 or 9 because he got robbed in a few seasons.

McNabb did all of that going his entire career without a great RB, and most of his career without a great WR like most of those guys in the hall had (he only had one for 22 total games). The same year they finally get him a great WR, he winds up in the Super Bowl.

Yeah, he had a lot of injuries and as a result he wasn't able to show up in a number of games and that's a knock on him since durability is a major factor. But taking into account his entire body of work, I can easily overlook that. Championships are a team effort, and while a QB can make all the difference in the world there, I can't take someone off the hall course because they don't have one. You'd have to throw most of the guys in the hall out of the hall and shut it down if championships were made the main criteria.

It's the Hall of Fame, not the Hall of Above Average, as such McNabb has no business going there as anything other than a paying visitor.

I would hope you would put Warner ahead of him.

Once again tho there are 52 other active players on the roster that day of those title games you can't really say it was all his fault that he lost 3 of them
