Re: When John Madden Speaks, Game Designers Listen w/ Video

Game Planning was a great feature, it needs to be expanded a lot. Maybe with Tendencies, and play calling logic. Make every Offensive and Defensive Coordinator unique with their own logic of playcalling. It can be the like the 'Ask Madden' feature- a Coordinator gives suggestions and as a coach you have the right to override them.

Madden itself has a lot of potential to be a very good football video game with the rapid growth of technology. Why hasn't it? Beyond me.

      Reply to all the replies:

Having sat down and met with them, I can say first hand they already know "what's wrong with their game." They know playcalling isn't perfect, that the computer isn't very good at playing fotball, and so on. The fact of the matter is that they have limited resources. It's really up to you, the consumer, to decide if the product they put out is worth purchasing. Something I am really glad they "finally" worked on for Madden 11 was blocking in the running game. It isn't perfect, but it better than it has even been in any video game I ever played. As Phil said in a Dev. Pod Cast last year, [paraphrasing] "It's really hard to push the idea to Marketing that we want to improve blocking. What are we going to put on the back of the box, 'Blocking finally works'?"

Agreed in full. If this feature was "fixed" and tuned, it would continue to change the game. Right now defensive playcalling doesn't care about the personnel the offense has on the feild. Also you can't just assign a game plan to the computer like you assign uniform options. You have to have a seperate profile. Fixing those two things would go a long way. I would also like to have more than 15 play per section.

        ^^i agree

With limited resources they have to work on priorities and sometimes it is not what consumers or hardcore want to hear. Marketing always will want that new "it'' feature that can be on the back cover. So key improvements that had to be made are pushed in to the next cycle.

I just hope they don't axe game planning like they axed playmaker control you had many Madden ago, I think it was Madden 02 or Madden 04, where as if you rolled out with the QB you were able to point out a specifc WR and make him move to what ever spot you wanted him to go for you could throw the ball to him on the run.

That was the best feature Madden had and they axed it.

Priority of any sports game is to get the basics down of what ever sport your game suppose to be representing. This year all the other sports games have done this.......FIFA, NHL, 2k11, MLB The Show.

It is only the football games that so far this generation of gaming that hasn't done this yet. Because at the end of the day, it is football after all, so football basics should be priority number 1.

Online, MUT, etc should take a back seat.

It seems the one of priorities are Back Cover features instead of fixing what you have. NBA 2k11 made huge improvements in a one year cycle. Besides MJ, they worked on every mode they have without adding "it" feature. Having competition makes developers work towards having the game on the market. Madden havin no competition, is the only game on the market. So they are not forced to make drastic improvements. It is like "our way or the highway."

Actually, this is still in the game. Check your manual, I think it's L and R trigger pulled together.

Whoops! I'm sorry, I swear I saw it in there where you pulled both the L and R triggers, then used the R stick. My bad, Gotmadskillz.

We're all doing this for the same cause. It was suppposed to be more a shot at EA. Unfortunantly, we all only have one current NFL game to play, and I would hate to turn it on and be limited to one hot route per play.

I agree with you, it should be harder to make multiple adjustments at the los, I just don't think that my options should be limited. I think that in real football, QBs are only limited by time constraints and the ability to communicate what they want to do on a play to the rest of the team, not by options on what they would like to do or change on a play. That is why I came up with the idea of how miscommunication could be implimented into the game through crowd noise, team chemistry, and overall hot route/audible execution data from real teams. This would make it possible to make reads as I see fit, while keeping it realistic to the game.

At the beginning and end of the day, Madden NFL has more important issues that need to be addressed before play calling and play switching should be a focus, in my opinion. The laundry list of issues that I stated in my original post should serve as a primary focal point for the EA dev team. Period. If, EA's goal truely is to develope a realistic game with everything you see on sunday in the game. But, with EA Sports, it's take it, or leave it. No competition, no evolution.

EA CAN'T EVEN GET ON 2K'S LEVEL, and that game wasn't perfect either. SMH! I say again, we deserve better.
Apology accepted, I just felt like you called me an idiot because I had a different opinion. I'm a big 2k guy myself, and APF has hot route limits, so I see where that was a quick fix that kind of emulated some realism. I would prefer the solution you listed given time constraints and communication issues myself.

I just want what he said, the madden game to be like the real NFLThere needs to more trades for picks. More CPU trades in Draft.Trade block needs to be fixed. Usually players get put up for Draft picks.
Randomized draft classes. Ex. DT Storm Williams in a draft with Qb Jemarcus Austin. The abilty to edit draft classes. There are too many short QBs.
I want to see Todd Mcshay and Mel Kiper for draft prospects. Adam Schefter for News Updates. There should be a Weekly Wrapup that discuss win & losses and upcoming games, injuries, award nominees, weather, highlights, draft prospects, coaches on hot seat.
There should be a nfl.com menu page like NBA and MLB 2K.

Player and team chemistry tied the coaching staff. Right now Madden is 22 players on the field. I don't see them as a team except for the color of their jersey. I want to see a more team over individual player concept. Would go a long way towards play now and franchise modes. Right now too many players are interchangable on teams and why keep a qb for more than three years if a better rated guy can come in and do better even if its mid season. Maybe a continuity rating or something. Ultimate team has a version of chemistry why not borrow amd tweak that and add in playing time to factor into it?
