Re: Lathen Scott with an oppurtunity of a lifetime (College Hoops 2k8)

It is April 9, 2010 an UC Davis has decided on their new head coach today. After a 14-18 record, UC Davis decided to fire Gary Stewart and named 30 year old Lathem Scott as their new head coach. Lathem played college basketball at D-2 for Cal Poly Pomona where he was mostly known for his 3 point ability. Cal Poly Pomona is most known for their defense and that is what UC Davis was looking for more than anything in a coach. Last season UC Davis gave up 70 points per game which ranked 220th in the country. Coach Scott started coaching for the Sacremento Dragons, his old high school, and went to the state semifinals just last season. Sacremento outscored their opponents by an average of 12 points and went 26-7. That apparently was enough for the Aggies as they hired him straight out of high school. "I was really shocked when they called honestly" said a grinning Lathen Scott, "As soon as they offered the job I took it. I guess that is a perk of being single, I can choose on my own whether or not to do things. I cannot wait to get things started tomorrow and I do my job as head coach!"

The UC Davis Aggies have a team with a lot of shooters and look to use that as a vocal point of their offense. They do not have any ballhandlers but they will do their best with what they have.

A quick look at UC Davis' roster for 2010-2011

        Starters:

PG: Todd Lowenthal 6'3 190 lbs. Senior

Strengths: He is a good shooter who has range to the 3 point line. He is the leader of this team and is a solid passer. He is a fairly good ball-handler

Weaknesses: He is very slow and does not have a good vertical. Yes he is white.

SG: Eddie Miller 6'5 195 lbs. Junior

Strengths: Miller is a good shooter and never seems to tire out.

Weaknesses: He is the slowest guard on the team. He has no quickness at all. He will have trouble guarding his man at times.

SF: Mark Payne 6'8 215 lbs. Senior

Strengths: Payne is very tall for his position. He is arguably the best playmaker on the team and if you want, he could play some point guard for you. He is a very good ball-handler along with being a great passer.

Weaknesses: He is a bad defender. He does not force tournovers often if at all.

PF: Joe Harden 6'8 210 lbs. Senior

Strengths: He is your average player. He can shoot if open, he is a good defender, he is aware of what is going on at all times, and is a pretty good rebounder.

Weaknesses: He is not strong at all. He will have problems defending against physical players.

        C: Mike Kurtz 7'0 200 lbs. Freshman

Strengths: Kurtz is someone who can hit the three. He has range up to the arc and will shoot if not guarded properly. He is very good on the block on both ends of the floor.

Weaknesses: Kurtz is very skinny for his height. He will have problems against other big men that are very big and physical. He also needs to work on his rebounding.

        Bench:

PG: Tyler Les 6'2 185 lbs. Freshman: Good ball-handler/Bad passer

SG/SF: Ryan Sypkens 6'4 185 lbs. Sophmore: Good shooter/Very slow and terrible defender.

SF: Ryan Howley 6'5 190 lbs. Sophmore: Good shooter and very physical/Does not have good basketball IQ and is a terrible passer.

PF/C: Alex Tiffin 6'9 220 lbs. Freshman: He can put the ball in the basket if on the block/Worst ball-handler, passer you will ever see. He also is very foul prone.

PG: Ryan Silva 5'10 160 lbs. Senior: He is fast/Terrible ball-handler, bad shooter, bad passer, no court vision... just bad

SF/PF: Josh Ritchart 6'9 215 lbs. Freshman: Good shooter and he has the most potential out of any of the freshman on this team/Very slow and bad defender.

SF: Harrison Dupont 6'5 225 lbs. Sophmore: Fairly good ball-handler and never fouls/No court vision
        NOTE: Redshirt due to Transfer

"The UC Davis Aggies are a team with a bunch of players who can shoot. They have 7 guys who are reliable from the 3 point line" stated Lee Williamson from 2khoops.com, "On the other hand they have only a couple people who can handle the ball. They will have a tough time breaking presses. Also, they only have 3 guys who can play the Power Foward and Center positions. Joe Harden will be forced to start at the 4 even though he is a natural small forward."

          Get to know your coaches

Lathen Scott: 30 years old (Year 1) Head Coach

          Ovr: C
          Off: C-
          Def: C
          Tea: C-
          Sco: C+
          Cha: C+
          Dis: C-

          Philosophy:

Offense: Run a half-court offense but if you can get in the open floor go get it. Coach Scott runs a Princeton offense and is very methodical in his gameplan.

Defense: He will run any defense that will stop the other opponent. In high school coach Scott was known for running a Triangle and 2, a 1-1-3, 2-1-2, etc. He would like to play straight up man to man but he will go with any zone that can stop the opponent effectively. Coach Scott is not known for pressing which is a probably a very good thing for this Aggies squad who is not known for their quickness.

Taurance Conley: 30 years old (Year 1) Assistant Coach

          Ovr: C-
          Off: D
          Def: C
          Tea: D
          Sco: F
          Cha: C
          Dis: B-

Philosophy: Taurance Conley was the assistant coach for Lathen Scott at Sacremento High School for the past two years and came to UC Davis with coach Scott. Conley is also a coach who is all about defense. He does not know the "art" of basketball just yet but will do anything to learn everything about basketball and hopefully be able to have his own coaching job one day.

Smush Hess: 36 years old (Year 1) Assistant Coach

          Ovr: C-
          Off: C+
          Def: F
          Tea: D
          Sco: C+
          Cha: C-
          Dis: D

Philosophy: Coach Bass was the assistant coach at Cal Poly Pomona when Lathen Scott played there. Since then the two men became close friends. Lathen Scott wants Bass on his staff because Wesley Bass is known for picking out talent that not many others see. Coincidentally, Wesley Bass recruited Lathen Scott and convinced him to go to Cal Poly Pomona even though there were a couple D-1 schools trying to bring Lathen Scott onto their team.

1st game felt like a game in March

The UC Davis Aggies with their new head coach Lathen Scott played the New Mexico State Aggies to start off the season. New Mexico State was 0-2 coming into today and came in looking for their first win. UC Davis started off hitting everything they put up and were soon up 23-11. Then, as if a light switch turned on, New Mexico went on a 17-0 run and UC Davis went without a basket for 6 minutes. The game after that would be neck and neck for the rest of the game. Then with 30 seconds left with UC Davis down 61-58, they looked for the first shot they could get. UC Davis found Mark Payne, who was 4-5 from 3 up to that point, wide open for 3. He shot the ball and missed but Kurtz came down with the rebound. Then, Howley was wide open from 3 but he missed the shot! Kurtz again came down with the rebound to find Lowenthal open from 3 and once again HE MISSED! Kurtz came down with ANOTHER rebound to find Silva spotting up from 3 in the corner with about 8 seconds left and HE MISSED! Then Mark Payne got the ball again with 2 seconds left and missed a contested 3 to lose the game 61-58. UC Davis turned the ball over 17 times which led to 22 fastbreak points for New Mexico State. UC Davis, however, grabbed 17 offensive rebounds and got 21 second chance points. New Mexico State did not get an offensive rebound the whole game.

Once again guys with the box scores I will post all of the players that play on my team but on the opponent's team I will only post the starters for the other team and any major contributors off of the bench. If you want me to post all of the players' stats for the other team for a specific game just let me know and I would be happy to do it.

Could UC Davis pull off the upset?

UC Davis just came off of a heartbreaker in New Mexico two nights earlier. The question on everyone's mind was, "Would they come back and fight hard against Texas?" No one seemed to know what exactly UC Davis would bring to the table. What they did bring was a hard effort, but a team that was undisciplined. UC Davis got into foul trouble early and it haunted them for most of the game. UC Davis stayed in the game for the most part and even kept it to about 9 points with 8 minutes remaining, but in the end it was Texas who came out on top. The last few minutes of the game Texas destroyed any hope of a comeback from UC Davis. The final score was 78-59.

Hey guys I am starting this legacy over to an extent. I just uploaded raiderfan's 2010-11 rosters (http://www.operationsports.com/forum...60-roster.html if you are interested here is the forum) off of 2k Share and I like these rosters more. I am keeping UC Davis and I am using the same schedule and I will have it where I lose the first two games to keep it the way it was. I will just edit everything tomorrow like the top 25, my overview on all my players, recruits, etc. So if you are following this legacy make sure you look at the revised posts over the next couple of days.

Hey everyone I just updated the legacy (finally). If you have a coach for a team and you want me to put your coaches name in for that team I'd love to. If anyone wants to follow how their favorite team is doing I can do that for you too.

                            1st Round of Tournament

The UC Davis Aggies are looking for their first win of the season against ranked opponent, Mississippi State. There were questions surrounding the Bulldogs whether or not Varnado's departure would hurt this team. The answer was obviously not. Mississippi State dominated the paint and got 24 points combined by their two post players (Sidney and Riek). UC Davis, on the other hand, got just 9 points out of Kurtz and 4 points out of Tiffin. "It was a really tough day" says a tired coach Scott, "We just could not get anything going inside and just started throwing up some desperate looks. We are still very undisciplined and my team is going to find out pretty quickly that if they don't play by my rules, than they are going to be in a world full of hurt." Mississippi State came out on top 70-54.
