It's certainly legal... it's not crazy silly execution. But it is DANGEROUS. He made the allusion to the risk of fumbles, but he never showed any. Having had to setup a similar lateral situation on a few occasions when trailing late in games. All failed miserably. IMO, it's simply not worth the risk/reward. I've either fumbled the toss or came away with worse field position than if I'd just setup a normal return.
I have more opening kickoff return TD's with normal returns than total return yards as a result of the lateral...
I wouldn't say it's cheese, but it looks that way when you only see the ones that work for a TD. The 15 fumbles he didn't show are the reason it's not cheese.
