    Tiers for NFL players

I'm currently working on making an 2010 NFL roster, but I'm having a lot of trouble determining how to rank the players. It's hard to say whether a player is a gold, silver, or bronze tier. I'm trying to only keep 2010 in mind with the help of stats and not relying on a player's entire career. I started off by making all pro bowlers golds, but that didn't look right since there were a couple of players who probably didn't deserve it. I'm going to go through and edit the ratings for all the generics so it's not a huge difference who is a bronze and generic. The main difference between the two is going to be the Consistency rating. It would be slightly easier if we knew the rest of the ratings categories. Anybody have an idea how I should rate the players? Who deserves to be a gold, silver, or bronze based solely on their performance this season?

My opinion of the current starting QBs:

    Brady - Gold
    Sanchez - Silver
    Henne - Silver
    Fitzpatrick - Bronze / Silver

    Flacco - Silver
    Palmer - Silver
    McCoy - Bronze
    Roethlisberger - Silver

    Schaub - Silver
    P.Manning - Gold
    Garrard - Silver
    Collins - Bronze / Silver

    Tebow - Bronze
    Cassel - Bronze / Silver
    Campbell - Bronze
    Rivers - Silver / Gold

    Romo - Silver
    E.Manning - Silver
    Vick - Gold
    Grossman - Bronze

    Cutler - Bronze / Silver
    Stafford - Silver
    Rodgers - Silver
    Jackson - Bronze

    Ryan - Gold
    Clausen - Generic / Bronze
    Brees - Gold
    Freeman - Silver

    Skelton - Generic / Bronze
    Bradford - Silver
    A.Smith - Bronze
    Hasselbeck - Silver

So based upon this year's performance and stats, that Romo is a silver? I was going to place Kitna in Romo's place and put Favre in front of Jackson because that's how it was for most of the year.

This process is going to be a real challenge because there can only be 11 tiered players on a team and I'm going to have to decide which are the 11 best players regardless of position. I can guarantee you that there is going to be about 5 or 6 QBs that are not even going to get a star.

I also think I'm going to use the Pro Bowl starters, reserves, and alternates as a guide for Offensive Linemen.

Pretty good list but no way in hell should Henne be a silver, in fact he shouldn't have any tier.

I am a Dolphins fan, so that may colour my view slightly, but I definitely think he should have a tier. Maybe bronze with no abilities.

When I make my roster, tier is going to have very little to do with the talent of a player. I will go through and adjust the ratings for every player. Only abilities that can not be defined by a rating will be give out (ie. Deception, Bump Buster, Footsteps). If I were to make Henne a bronze, it would be because he is at least the 11th best player on the Dolphins team. Essentially, bronze and generics will be pretty similar in terms of talent and ability with a slight difference in terms of consistency.

Kitna is a backup, theres no reason to put him ahead of Romo. There's no scenario where a healthy Romo would be on the bench in favor of Kitna.

I was like O_o on the Henny thing aswell and Im a Dolphins fan lol..Henny just needs confidence he has the arm tho but enough abot them,

When making players elite remember that its not usually in the basic pass strength, speed and agility, but in consistency, composure and STAMINA (<--for skill players especially)

Imo there should not be to many Golds, Brady and Manning probably, Nobody should be Godly tho, I dont think it would be too fun if things got unbalanced, and throwing out golds would do that, Silvers and bronz can get it done...@TheDude47 thats a good way to look at it are you going to use 2k5s 2011/Maddens rosters for help? Or just go by what you feel?

Oh, I'm not disagreeing with that, but I'm going by who has played the most during the 2010 season and what their stats were. This won't be a pre-season 2010 roster. If anything, this will be a middle-toward-end of season 2010 roster. This means don't expect Dallas Clark, Tony Romo, or Matt Stafford as starters because due to injury they didn't play that much during the season and therefore wouldn't be used in an accurate cross-section of the 2010 season.

And this should go for Alex Smith too. I know its not possible, but if it was, giving Smith a Copper or Tin level as his tier would be appropriate.

You pretty much get what I want to do. I was going to use a variety of 2k5 rosters to help with the ratings part and use DavonBrown's roster for the intangibles. I'm definitely going to make sure that ratings like consistency, composure, and stamina really set the best players from the ones that have the abilities to be great. It might take some work, but this could end up being a pretty accurate sim roster.

In my opinion, there are too many silvers and not enough bronzes and generics.

The NFL is a QB-deficient league right now. There are a lot of bad ones out there and hardly any good ones.

Here is how I would edit your list:

Phillip Rivers and Aaron Rodgers are also golds IMO.

the problem is if you're tiering for each team, or tiering in general. one could argue that the jaguars only have one gold (mojo), but you can't make their team that way. meanwhile, the ravens have four golds (ray rice, ray lewis, ed reed, haloti ngata)...

This isn't a problem. With the hex editor, you can make any combination of tiers you want as long as there are 11 of them. You don't have to go by the 2G,3S,6B format. I've already made several teams with no gold and 11 golds.
