when i drop back to throw a try to move around (with left stick) in the pocket to buy time it throws a pass

1. how am i doing this?
2. how can i prevent it?
3. how do i make it so i can move with the d-pad again becauses its nonfunctional (and i could have sworn i was using it on madden 11 before)
