    The NHL Draft Prospects Project

I'm currently working on editing and creating prospects for the 2011, 2012, 2013, and (if possible) 2014 drafts. These will be very realistic. The goal is to get the draft as similar to real life as possible. Of course, I cant make it exact because BeaGM creates random prospects for the drafts, but I will have over 150 prospects for 2011, 60+ each for 2012 and 2013, and about 25 for 2014. This will take me a little bit of time, and I might wait until after the trade deadline to do this so all draft picks will be in the right teams hands. Currently I'm on the research part, and I have compiled lists of the top rated players in all of these years. I will determine the ratings based on a slotting system, using the 2009 and 2010 drafts as a basis. The unfortunate part is I am doing this on PS3, but hopefully I'll figure out a way around the roster sharing issue. I will keep a spreadsheet, and hopefully if this is a success, I can also do this for 360. If you have any suggestions for me, please comment. I will you guys updated on how this progresses

In terms of rating the players I would use Hall and Seguin as the model for the Franchise players of each draft (Larsson, Couturier, Landeskog, RNH, Murray, Yakupov, Ebert, McKinnon) and I would use Cam Fowler as the model for the players that round out the top 10 (76 2 B's and an A-) and for the rest of the first round I would have them mostly at B's and lowering overalls. Hope this helps and I'd be happy to help in other ways too.

Pretty much what I do as well only with potential at B unless the player is supposed to be truly elite in an area such as RNH has an A- for offense. I'll also look at elite/star NHL players to get an idea of what kind of ratings I want certain prospects to approach, i.e. using Dan Boyle as a template for Ryan Murphy.

I go off what I read at hfboards and various scouting sites. I'm less interested in being exact with ratings and more interested in modeling their general playing ability/tendency.

Keep an eye out for strength, poise, and endurance/durability as those are almost always going to need to be increased. Once poise reaches 75 the player gets a 3 (I think I've seen 2 though) point boost to overall which can be useful in trying to model realistic draft positioning.

Before doing a "for keeps" franchise sim a couple of years to track draft position, development patterns, etc. I foolishly had Larsson's ath at A- and his skating was at 90 by his 2nd/3rd year.

I'm also on the PS3 and wish there was a way to share rosters. For NBA2k I use a completely different roster/slider set-up than everyone else but the draft classes are still useful as a template and from saving me the time of having to create and edit dozens of players from scratch.

Re: The NHL Draft Prospects Project

thanks for the insight guys, and it just so happens ive been using the same lists for 2012 and 2013 (scoutman1 on hfboards is the best). the only difference is i have yakupov above grigorenko in 2012, but they will be rate similarly. thus far, ive worked extensively on the 2011 class, using the mid-term rankings from central scouting and mackenzies rankings as well. i rated larsson at #1 at 74 OVR with A-/A/A- potential (off/def/ath). landeskog is 74 with A-/B/B, couturier 74 A/A-/A- and rnh is 72 A-/B/B. a little low, but remember, 2011 is a weak class. i have logged everything into a spreadsheet, as well as a document to list the caps i created. so far i have tyler biggs, jt miller, scott mayfield, victor rask, mika zibanejad, rocco grimaldi, jamie oleksiak, seth ambroz, mario lucia, philippe hudon, and michael paliotta CAPs finished. not sure how many players deep im gonna go, but at least 120 deep for 2011, plus 30ish goalies. comment for any specific player ratings

Re: The NHL Draft Prospects Project

I just discovered a huge issue with doing such a project is that created players on the xbox360 turn red when drafted not sure about PS3 but I would go test that. Also all that stuff about the 2011 class being weaker I would take with a grain of salt. The first two rounds will be just as good as any of the last few if not better. However it will suffer in the late rounds. Therefore I think you should use Hall and Seguin as reference points for Larsson, Couturier, RNH and Landeskog. Personally if I had to rate them Larsson(79 A,A,A-), Couturier(78 A-,A-,A-), Landeskog(78 A-,A-,B) and RNH (76 A,A-,A) Don't know how they would develop but just using the 2010's as a reference point for potential.

Way too much for the potentials imo. I made Larsson a 73 A- A- A-, Couturier a 74 A- B B-, RNH a 72 A- B- B and Landeskog a 78 B B B, and in my franchise, Larsson topped at 94, Couturier at 89, RNH at 88 and Landeskog at 90. With the ratings you gave, I would not be surprised they would go in the mid 90s. :\
On another note, I myself created some players for the 2011, 2012 and 2013 draft. Here are some of them, and I know they might not be accurated.
                2011 : Seth Ambroz (68 B B B-), Tyler Biggs (69 B B B), Victor Rask (68 B B- B) / EDITS : Couturier (74 A- B B-), Nugent-Hopkins (72 A- B- B), Larsson (73 A- A- A-), Landeskog (78 B B B)
                2012 : Mikhail Grigorenko (75 A- B- A-), Sebastian Collberg (67 B B- B), Michael Matheson (70 B B- A) / EDITS : Nail Yakupov (78 A C A-), Griffin Reinhart (73 B B B), Nick Ebert (74 A- B B), Alex Galchenyuk (73 B B- A-)
                2013 : Nathan MacKinnon (86 B B- B), Alex Forsberg (78 A- B B), Seth Jones (75 B A- B-) / EDITS : nothing notable

thanks for this, i love your ratings for 2012 and 2013. i just finished my 2011 class, and rated my players very similarly, except rnh i rated a 74 with some form of A potential. the only thing im worried about is how i rated the goalies

Be careful with rating players with A/A/A or A-/A-/A-.
I edited Pietranglo(sp) to 77 with A/A/A- & he ended up 85 the following season & I never used him.
I had to trade for him & put him on my 4th line so he wouldn't becomes a 95 by the end of the year.

thanks alot for this, it should be very helpful. let me give u guys apdate. i finished up my classes, and started experimenting with the 2011 draft... and it was horrible. too many players fell or went undrafted. throw in the red face glitch, and it was a disaster. i did keep a detailed list of my CAPs, and will post that if anybody wants, but the red face glitch really is annoying. hopefully ea will fix this.

i dont think Red Face will be fixed this year. I sent emails and tweets to the NHL guys and never heard anything back about it. Its been in there since launch.

thats really a shame, i could do so much more if they got rid of that. anyway, i wanna know if anybody is willing to help me with something. its obvious that most of the 2010 draft picks are under rated. is anybody willing to help me think of rating updates for them? the goal is to eventually get correct ratings up enough so they develop into how they should in the nhl. DrewDoughty8, your ratings seem pretty solid, would you like to help? ill put everything in a spreadsheet when im done, so everyone can have a guide

I'm not exactly great with doing the accurate ratings but I can show you some more of my 2010 prospects in a bit.
