Just tested this in a game against a buddy:

The edited generic names do not show up, unfortunately; they reset to whatever the original generic's name was.

But all the edited player numbers, equipment, and body builds remain intact.

So that is better than nothing, I guess.

Your generics will look the part, but they will have a funny name.
