MLB 2K11 Hands-On Preview: Reoccurring Injuries, Beefed Up Commentary and More

The New York Post has posted their MLB 2K11 hands-on preview.

"The dugout reactions, fielding animations, swings and leaving the batter’s box have all been reshot to add another level of realism to the gameplay experience. For example if Shane Victorino legs out an infield single, he might pump his fist as he heads back to first base, or if CC Sabathia loads the bases he might head back to the mound while shouting expletives into his mitt. If you see it in real-life, you can expect to see it in 2K11.

The team has also added in new types of hits and fielding tendencies based on bat contact and player rating. So if Ichiro chops a ball into the dirt down the third base line, it will not just be a simple ground ball, it may be a chopper or dribbler. Likewise, if David Wright is fielding the ball, he may cleanly barehand it and fire to first whereas Pablo Sandoval might double-clutch and not make the play. Ratings have truly been stressed in this year’s game.

Other features in 2K11 will be an improvement of MLB Today, which will update rosters daily and will allow players to play that night’s games. Also MLB Today will use the player dynamic system mentioned in Franchise Mode to track players’ real trends over the past 30 days and adjust ratings accordingly. The commentary has also been beefed up bigtime, with unique commentary for almost any possible scenario you can think of. The team at 2K said that MLB Today will be so immersive and accurate that it can in theory replace SportsCenter, MLB Network and Baseball Tonight on a daily basis."

    Very nice.

Another change is that the camera eliminates any sort of home run indicators, so you will have to judge based on the sound of the ball off the bat and the trajectory if you have warning-track power or if you sent one into the bleachers.
    Finally! This is great news

    Sounds good.

Aside from Franchise Mode, players can create their own ballplayer and take them through the My Player mode, which returns from 2K10. The 2K team has said that this is the mode that has improved the most thanks to the changes made this year. First off, your player isn’t just going to be forced up into the big leagues, you have to earn your way up and will be called upon when needed. So if you are a second baseman in the Yankees’ farm system, you had better hope for a trade, injury, or you better play your tail off because you’ll need to displace All-Star Robinson Cano to make your way up to The Show.
This is really good to hear as well because it was too easy to get called up last year. I'm glad they're making it a challenge where we actually have to earn a spot on the roster.

This should be interesting to see.

Without even reading the article and just reading the things that you highlighted seem like a big improvement.

I just hope some of the real time stuff was put back in. With Victorino's example, it sounds like some might have been.

Ya. I like watching the batters step up to the plate and do their routine and than watching them step out of the box and step back in.

This is actually good to read. Excited that there is going to be some suspense brought back to when a home run is hit.

2k11 sounds promising. Now, all I need to see is that the Rockies black on black vest is in the game and I'll pre-order it tomorrow.

So what does the home run part mean? Does it mean that even if it's a home run, it will have the huge landing spot thing like a normal hit and at the last second it might pin point it to going over the wall or what?

If a normal hit has a big landing spot at first and then shrinks down depending on the fielder's ability, doesn't that mean a lack of an indicator would basically mean we know it's a home run because it's not giving the fielder a indication of where it will land?

I'm having a difficult time determining whether or not the writer has played 11', or just conducted an interview. Does anyone know?

Either way, the improvements seem amazing!

                      Great article!

Well, I'm assuming he's talking about single player where there won't be any landing spots. The home run indicator would still show when you hit a one against the AI, so I'm looking forward to not having my home runs spoiled any more especially in My Player and Franchise

The problem was it would also show up when the AI was in the field.

game is moving back into the purchase catagory. I was thinking of just keeping 2k10 but, man if its gonna be great I have to make the jump.
                            Gaming hard since 1988

I have won like 25 Super Bowls in Madden so I am kinda a big deal.
