PSP Download vs buying UMD

OK. I have come to the realization that the psp game is basically going to be nothing more than a roster update from 2010. That being said, as an Astros fan I have created Brett Wallace and Jason Castro and will buy the psp game this year simply so these created players will be announced by name instead of #. Does anyone know if the downloaded version loads quicker than the umd? And how much memory does it take to load? I've always bought the UMD in the past but want to try the download this year if it will provide me with faster load times.

I read it's about 3x faster than UMD to load. If you don't trade in, better download it.

BTW they haven't 'show' anything at all for PSP users. As you said, it's gonna be the same game with roster update. Horrible graphic, no umpires, no online. Maybe next time for psp2.

There is no comparison - go with the download.

The UMD is going to be insanely slow for this game.

I've been playing off removable media for a few years now.

I'm looking forward to the psp2 as well. I have yet to buy a ps3 because I travel a lot with work and have two small children so when I am home I spend my time with them. PSP2 will hopefully provide the ps3 experience but the freedom to play on the go!

The latest Game Informer has me really excited about the PSP2...

1. Beefy analog sticks comparable to XBOX 360
2. Devs who are saying porting PS3 games to it is easy.
3. Power & design are awesome for a portable.

How much room do you have to have on a Memory Stick to download the game? I have a 4gb that is pretty much empty, aside from some music files. Would that be enough room?

A UMD has a max. size of 1.8 GB so you should be fine.

Not only will load times be better -- if you upgrade to the new PSP2, you'll still be able to use all the titles you've purchased via PSN. UMD titles . . . you're out of luck.

That probably matters more for other types of games that aren't updated every year, but still. As a current PSP owner, I'm completely done with UMDs. I may not buy many more PSP titles, but every one that I do purchase will be PSN.

Not so fast....unless news has broken on this like today, I don't think backwards compatibility has been announced for the NGP/PSP2. Even if the games are digital, that doesn't mean you'll automatically be able to play them on the new system unless Sony builds the original PSP architecture into it.

On topic: As everyone else has said, the difference in UMD vs download is night and day in regards to load times - definitely go download if you have the space for it.

I visit tech blog sites like engadget and gizmodo more or less daily. The issue has come up numerous times, and numerous times Sony have clarified that the NGP will be able to play PSP games.

As the linked story points out, it's an open question how well it will do so, given that PSP titles will run thru software emulation. But given the processing power of the NGP vs the PSP, it shouldn't be a problem.

What *is* a problem is that the NGP has no UMD slot, so it's literally impossible to use UMDs. There's talk of Sony re-releasing UMDs on the new card media, but that's *definitely* unconfirmed.

Besides, when Sony announced the PSPGo, they promised they would come up with some sort of trade-in system to allow people to convert UMDs to electronic downloads. It didn't happen then, and I doubt it happens now. All signs, past and present, point to Sony dropping UMDs like a bad habit.

Has there been a price point on this thing yet? As much as I like the PSP(I'm still playing the PSP 1000), I'm hoping that it doesn't cost $400 like the ps3, esp if there isn't umd playability(I own about 50 games,all sports titles). I'm almost tempted in just purchasing the 3000 now that the price has dropped 40 bucks.

MLB 10 was just under 850MB, so you've got plenty of room. And you're probably right to assume that it will be nothing more than a roster update. That's what 10' was and it is likely what 11' will be.
