2k5 got close on the xbox, but Madden still beat it out....is the ps1 far enough back or would you have to go back to the genesis?

NFL Gameday MIGHT have, I'm not sure. If not, you'd have to go back to Tecmo Superbowl. I'm not even sure about that... depends on whether they released in the same year back then.

Would Gameday even count?...Wasn't that the year EA decided not to even release Madden?...That was 95 or 96, right?

Considering Madden didn't release because Gameday released the first 3d football game and forced the devs back to the drawing board, I'd say it counts.

According to vgchartz, Gameday 98 sold 1.54 million while Madden 98 sold 1.28 million.

the previous year EA Sports were saying, and I'm paraphrasing here, Polygonal football players were not possible that gen.

well Gameday 98 did it with a smooth frame rate, and out sold Madden....then the next year it was a miracle O_O we got Madden 99 with Polygonal players.....which is when I switched back to Madden, because Gameday series seemed to start getting too arcadey for my taste with Gameday 99.

LOVED Madden 99! I still remember the first pics released for the game. I believe it had Jets players in snow gameplay on GameFan magazine.

I think it was Gameday 98, not sure. That was the year where Madden 64 was out where it was only players and not real NFL teams. I think EA was late acquiring the NFL rights that year.

Just because it's not called football in america doesn't mean it's not football somewhere else....good point I suppose. Fifa really outsells Madden by that much? Something not quite right about that picture if true.

What's not right about it? Soccer's the most popular sport in the world, easily.

Not really. Soccer/football is huge outside of the US, especially. American football is nowhere near as popular outside US borders, so its not surprising that FIFA would outsell Madden by that margin.

Association Football (Soccer) and tennis both greatly out weight any American sport in terms of popularity on a global scale.

Such great sports, I wish we put more emphasis on them here in the US.

Because it counts global sales. Madden outsells FIFA by a lot in the US.
But FIFA sells like crazy in Europe and worldwide, Madden basically only gets its sales in the US.

Madden is the top selling sports game in the US.

Didn't realize people in 3rd world countries could afford this technology.

If I had to guess, I'd say GAmeDay 98 on PS2 sold more copies. It was the first football game with 3D models.

Well, I live in Thailand, and video games and systems are WILDLY popular here...while many can't afford them, there are kiosks set up in most major shopping centers with systems to play on. And guess what's usually playing??? Fifa...many people here have never heard of Madden, and don't know anything about "American football".
And the families with money have systems...sometimes several.

I played Gameday 98 INTO THE GROUND!

Loved that game at the time.
