          2011 Oregon Ducks Season Preview

After cruising through their regular season, the Ducks were shut down, and physically shut down, by the Auburn Tigers in the BCS National Championship Game.
That game, along with the 2010 Rose Bowl loss to Ohio State, exposed a huge weakness: The Ducks just weren’t strong enough to beat the top teams.

However, this team still has to be considered a contender for the BCS National Championship. Oregon is in almost every experts top five heading into the season. With LaMichael James, Darron Thomas, and Cliff Harris, it’s hard not to put them in your top five. The only reason they wouldn’t be in your top five is because of the losses of Casey Matthews and Jeff Maehl. Even without those two key players, the Ducks have enough talent to fill those shoes.

Oregon has the ingredients to make a second straight appearance in the BCS National Championship Game. The offense will put up similar numbers to last year. The only thing holding them back from the same numbers is the loss of wide receiver Jeff Maehl and two starting linemen on offense (center Jordan Holmes and guard C.E. Kaiser). The defense should be solid again. Defensive coordinator, Nick Aliotti, always gets the best out of his defense. They were one of the best last year, but were under the radar due to the explosive offense. This year, it should be no different.

              Oregon Ducks Begin Spring Practice

LaMichael James and Lache Seastrunk will likely share time in the backfield this year

Eugene, OR --This spring practice is much different than last year's spring practice. With high expectations, there is no time for fun and games. "We have high expectations, and I don't want to let anyone down," Kelly said. "That loss to Auburn in the last few second was really hard to swallow, but we're looking to bounce back and get another shot at a championship." This spring there is a little bit of a different vibe. Oregon is under investigation for a 25,000 dollar payment for the recruitment of Lache Seastrunk. The payment was made just weeks after he signed his letter of intent to play for Oregon. Seastrunk looked like he was worth every five star with some brilliant runs during practice today. Seastrunk could see a good bit of playing time with an already crowded backfield. Other notes are the big holes to fill on the offensive and defensive lines.
-- Darron Thomas will where number five this year, Josh Huff will wear number one.
--The ducks only have two freshmen enrolled early. Tight end Colt Lyerla and linebacker Tyson Coleman. Both participated in practice today.
Oregon won't take questions from the media about the ongoing investigation but are complying with the NCAA.

Second Day of Spring Practice Wraps Up For Oregon

Chip Kelly watches a pass from Darron Thomas

Eugene, OR -- The second day of practice wrapped up for Oregon players. "We are really starting to click," Cliff Harris said. "Coach Kelly really wants us to get to know each other on the field so that we can learn to play together." This week, the Ducks will not practice in helmets, but are expected to wear pads next week to start preparing for LSU. "You can never start game planning too early, especially against an elite team like LSU," Kelly said. "These guys want to show the country that they are physical enough to play with some of the best teams in the country, and they get that chance September third, on the road."

Reporters caught up with Darron Thomas after practice, and when they asked him how he thinks the team will do this year, he responded, "I think we have the talent to win, and I know we can only go as far as I can take them, and that's why I'm staying here over Spring Break, to work with my receivers, because we all want another shot at that national championship this year." Chip Kelly complimented Thomas on his work ethic this spring. "He wants to be the leader of this team, and he's working his butt off to show the team that he wants to win. Hopefully, this will rub off on the other players."
