    Beginner Dynasty

Ok so I have been a long time lurker and have finally decided to join OS and do my own dynasty thread. I have loved over the past few years reading through some ya'll dynasties and see how creative ya'll get. My goal is to make this thing go at least 3 or 4 series. I won't be getting 2012 NCAA for awhile plus I need to prove to myself I can stick to a dynasty for awhile. So without further rambling time to start my own adventure......

    Team: New Mexico Lobos
    Difficulty: All-American
    Roster: LuvToDa90s
Sliders: kkman187 (edited some for myself)
    Quarter Length: 8 minutes

I'm going to start with New Mexico and stay with em until I win a natty. Then I might later take a job somewhere else if I want too. Also I'm not changing up any of the conferences although I did debate moving Boise to MWC. I am also using chia51s sliders for adjusting other schools gameplans so they sim better and when playing they call more like you expect them too

          Re: Beginner Dynasty

In an announcement today New Mexico AD Paul Krebs officially announced that Mike Locksley was out as head coach of the Lobos. This comes as no surprise as he compiled a record of 2-22 in his two years a t the helm. What was a surprise was who was announced as his replacement. Nick Redfoot a young Texas high school coach was given the nod. In an official statement Krebs said:

We are very excited about Coach Redfoot. He brings some much needed youth and energy to the program. We believe with Nick Redfoot at the helm the Lobos will be able to finally take that much needed step forward in becoming a national program and compete for conference titles.

Nick Redfoot coached 7 years of high school football. In those 7 years he won 5 state titles, a very impressive feat. However this is FBS college football and some question whether he can handle this level. Also if he can do anything with a program that has only won 2 games the past 2 years. In a brief statement Coach Redfoot said:

Football is my life and passion. I understand all that comes with taking the responsibility as head coach of a collegiate program. There has been a loser mentality around this football program the past few years and that changes now. Just like losing, winning is a culture. We all must change our attitudes if we want to be successful. I promise you if you give me your patience, support, and loyalty I will give this program championships.

Coach Redfoot brings his two high school coordinators Jay Woodson and Mike Slaten with him. He runs a one back set very similar to Mike Riley's Oregon State offense (aka I'm using Oregon State's playbook) and implements a 4-3 defense. Coach Redfoot announced that their would be a focus on the running game and getting pressure on the QB. There is no doubt a long road ahead of the young coach but some wonder if this young football mind might just be exactly what the New Mexico football program needed.

            **2010 Season Preview**
In later season when there are more unknowns I will do a bigger preseason breakdown but seeing as most everyone who plays the game knows what the initial rankings look like and whose the leading heisman candidates I'll just give a brief look at my depth chart, schedule, and recruiting

QB - #8 Tarean Austin FR 74 Ovr
HB - #1 Demond Dennis So 72 Ovr
            FB - #32 Josh Fussell SR(RS) 64 Ovr
WR - #81 Lamaar Thomas So 80 Ovr
            WR - #84 Ty Kirk So(RS) 76 Ovr
            Slot - #7 Bryant Williams Sr(RS) 73 Ovr
            TE - #97 Lucas Reed So(RS) 66 Ovr
            LT - #74 Byron Bell Jr(RS) 71 Ovr
            LG - #76 Zayn Bin Bilal Sr(RS) 71 Ovr
            C - #63 Dillon Farrell Fr(RS) 73 Ovr
            RG - #56 Mike Cannon Sr(RS) 72 Ovr
            RT - #77 Maurice Mears Sr(RS) 71 Ovr

As you can see a very young offense besides the offensive line. I chose to start Austin over BR Holbrook who is a 75 Ovr and a redshirt sophomore because Austin has more mobility. Its nice to have a guy that can escape pressure especially when your whole offensive line is basically ranked a 71. Will be relying Dennis for most of the offense on the ground maybe mix in the junior James Wright as well as he's a 70. Some great young talent at WR I'm excited about.

            LE - #88 Johnathan Rainey Jr(RS) 82 Ovr
            RE - #48 Jaymar Latchison Jr(RS) 69 Ovr
DT - #93 Pete Gardner Sr 74 Ovr
            DT - #49 Ugo Uzodinma So(RS) 73 Ovr
LOLB - #51 Cody Neely Sr 71 Ovr
            MLB - #58 Carmen Messina Jr(RS) 90 Ovr
            ROLB - #46 Spencer Merritt So(RS) 71 Ovr
CB - #6 Anthony Hooks Jr 70 Ovr
            CB - #29 Deshawn Mills So(RS) 71 Ovr
Nickel - #2 Emmanuel McPhearson So 69 Ovr
Dime - #5 Ravonne Carter Fr 68 Ovr
            FS - #17 Freddy Young So(RS) 70 Ovr
            SS - #28 Bubba Forrest Jr(RS) 69 Ovr

Defense is also pretty young with the bright spot being Messina. He's going to have to be a tackle machine. Also absolutely no depth at CB. I have 4 on roster and the freshman playing at dime is actually a FS. Not sure how good of a D we'll be this year but should be interesting

Oregon Pulls Out Close One in Eugene

              Eugene, OR --
Coming into Saturday’s afternoon contest there wasn’t much hope for Coach Redfoot’s Lobos. Bringing in a true freshman starting QB along with a very green head coach into one of the most hostile environments in college football didn’t bode well for New Mexico. However the Ducks were in for a much bigger fight than expected. > >
The first half tone was set by defense. New Mexico only allowed the Ducks three measly points including stopping the high powered offense three straight times inside the 7. On the offensive side of the ball New Mexico moved the ball but struggled to find the endzone, something that would plague the Lobo offense all game. Starting running back Demond Dennis suffered a hamstring injury on first play of the game knocking him out of the first half. James Wright struggled in his stead only mustering 13 yds on 7 carries in the first half. The only TD in the half would come in the 2nd quarter. In the 1st quarter another drive would fizzle out in the redzone on a freshman mistake. The Lobos were inside the redzone and threatening to score when the first of many mistakes made by Austin occured. Instead of looking the safety Eddie Pleasant off the freshman QB stared down talented sophomore receiver Lamaar Thomas. Reading the play beautifully, Pleasant broke on the ball and jumped in front of Thomas. Two more Lobo drives fizzled out just past the 50 yard line leaving many to believe we would have a 3-0 score at half. However that would not be the case. After moving the ball quickly with a mix of runs and short passes true freshman Tarean Austin would find Chris Hernandez on a corner route for a 24 yd TD pass. This time the freshman QB pumped faked the slant route causing Pleasant to bite hard. Then he dropped it beautifully over the shoulder of the senior wide receiver giving the Lobos the lead. It was Austin’s first career TD pass. Heading into half the Lobos had a shocking 7-3 lead.

Reporter: “Coach your thoughts on the first half so far?”
              > >
Coach Redfoot: “Well I am very proud of the way the guys have played so far. They’ve shown that we didn’t just come here to collect a paycheck for the school and go home but are looking for a win over an elite team. Gotta keep up the intensity and see if we can pull this thing out!”
              > >
Reporter: “What if any changes do you plan on making for the 2nd half? And what will the return of Dennis do to your gameplan?”
              > >
Coach Redfoot: “We gotta put the ball in the endzone. I mean we drove 3 times and got one score. That can’t happen especially against a team like the Ducks. Defense has to be ready. It was impressive that they held that offense to 3 points but you know that team is gonna be back with a vengengeance. And as for Dennis, well hopefully he’ll give us that spark for the running game.”
              > >
Reporter: “Thanks for the time coach!”
              > >
The third however would see a drastic change in the game. Demond Dennis returned to the game and on the very first carry of the half busted a 62 yd run. It looked like the Lobos were in shape and threatening to take an 11 point lead. However on the next carry by Dennis he would be popped by senior Zac Clark leading to a fumble and recovery by Josh Kaddu of the Ducks. Then it was the Lamichael James show. After a very mediocre 1st half James exploded in the 2nd half. Taking 8 carries on the 11 play scoring drive he lead the Ducks down the field. After the game James would credit Coach Kelly's heart to heart with him privately as the motivation for his 2nd half turn around. When asked what was said James smiled and just said, "I'll leave it your imagination." The drive would finish with a short 2 yd TD pass to Hoffman. Austin would take the field again with 5 min left in the 3rd quarter. He would move the Lobos to two first downs before throwing a second INT (a theme that would develop throughout the day). Oregon wasted no time in striking back. James on an option pitch would break 3 tackles and race for a 64 yd score. It was the highlight of the day. New Mexico sent a corner blitz to the exact side Oregon ran the option to. It looked like Thomas had set up James to get demolished when the elusive sophomore running back made a slick spin move leaving the defender grasping for air. A stiff arm, sick juke, and 64 yds later the Ducks had extended their lead to 17-7.
              > >
The fourth quarter would turn out to be a battle. After a late 3rd qtr interception by Eddie Pleasant, his 2nd of the day, Oregon would strike early in the 4th. James would again gash the Lobo defense. Moving the ball quickly inside the 5 where Thomas would hit Maehl in the back of the endzone for a 2 yd TD pass and a 24-7 Duck lead. Right when it looked like this game was heading for a blowout the Lobos would come charging back. On just two plays New Mexico would find paydirt. Austin hit Ty Kirk on a 27 yd pass then a bomb to Lamaar Thomas for a 53 yd TD pass. A quick hesitation left Cliff Harris of the Ducks standing flat footed and his coach furious as Thomas raced in for the TD. With just under 7 minutes to play it appeared we had a ball game. The New Mexico defense would find it’s first half swagger and force a three and out. But then disaster struck again for the Lobos. After a 9 yd rush Demond Dennis would go down with a foot injury. This time there would be no return as the team doctor would later report Dennis would be out of commission for 5 weeks at the least. Then 2 plays later Austin missed a wide open Hernandez that would have be an automatic TD. Going for it on 4th down Austin would try to escape pressure only to be sacked hard by Zac Clarke. Oregon would take over from its own 35 yd line.
              > >
After a couple of first downs by James the Lobo defense would stiffen again forcing a Duck punt. Retaking the field the Lobos would attempt a quick drive however for the 4th time of the day the true freshman would be picked off this time by Spencer Paysinger. The Ducks would kneel it twice and escape with a 24-14 win.

Wild Battle in Albuquerque Ends With Dramatic First Win for the Lobos

Albuquerque, NM -- The home opener for the Lobos and Coach Redfoot's first game at University Stadium would turn out to be a memorable one. Coming in as 10 pt underdogs after a courageous effort in Eugene, many wondered if the Lobos could compete at the same level especially with starting running back Dennis out of the game. Others were questioning if the freshman Austin had what it took to be a starting QB in the MWC. And some wondered if the Lobos could play four quarters of defense with Tommy Tuberville's Red Raiders. After tonight's game there's no doubt the answer to these questions was a resounding yes.

The way the game opened though did not bode well for the Lobo defense. After starting off last week with an impressive performance Mike Slaten's defense didn't come out of the locker room. On the first play from scrimmage Baron Batch took a draw handoff and ran into 4 Lobo defenders..... Then promptly shrugged all of them off and blasted away for an 82 opening play TD setting an NCAA record for longest rushing TD play in the NCAA history. Needless to say the Lobos needed to respond. The Lobos came out and put together a 17 play 68 yd drive that ate up 5 min of the first quarter. It appeared the New Mexico offense was going to plow its way into the endzone. But then the turnover bug from last week came back and bit em. On the 17th play of the impressive drive Wright takes the handoff and is crushed at the 8 yd line by junior Brian Duncan sending the ball flying into the hands of a Red Raider defender. Coach Redfoot was furious on the sideline as all week he had preached no turnovers.

However his defense would respond. After an incomplete pass, Jonathan Rainey would race around the Red Raider tackle and obliterate Taylor Potts on the one yard line. Unfortunately for the Lobo defense the sack did not get them a safety but it did set up a third and long play that would be snuffed out. After the punt the quarter would end with a 7-0 Red Raider lead.

The 2nd quarter would be full of big offensive plays. Another drive for the Lobos would end in a turnover as when Austin rolls out right he would be popped and throw the ball perfectly to Texas Tech linebacker Bront Bird. On the sideline Coach Redfoot gave Austin an earful as that was his 5th interception in 6 quarter. His defense though would back him up forcing a three and out. Then it was time for the freshman QB to show what he was capable of. On 3rd and 9 from his own 48 Texas Tech would bring 8 men trying to get to Austin. The freshman however would stand in the pocket and deliver a strike to a wide open Ty Kirk who would take it the rest of the way for a 52 yd score to tie the game at 7-7. After exchanging of punts and solid defensive efforts the big play Lobo offense would strike again. Sending a corner blitz the Red Raider secondary would have a breakdown or miscommunication as no one rotates over to Kirk. Austin again hits the streaking sophomore this time for 80 yds and a Lobo score! Putting New Mexico up 14-7. Before the half would end though the Red Raiders would find some 2 minute magic. Moving the ball on 6 quick passes 4 to Detron Lewis, Taylor Potts would lead the Red Raiders into the redzone. However after getting popped by Pete Gardner, Potts would have to leave the game to catch his breath. He would return in the 2nd half. Fortunately for Texas Tech Garrett Sheffield was ready to go. After an incomplete first pass Sheffield would find Alexander Torres wide open in the middle of the endzone for a Texas Tech TD. The two teams would go into half tied at 14-14.

Reporter: "Coach Redfoot thoughts on the first half?"

Coach Redfoot: "Well if we would quit shooting ourselves in the foot on offense with turnovers and incomplete passes we would be up in this game. Defense let a cheap one in there late and we can't let that happen. Gotta come out and take over this game early next half."

                Reporter: "Thanks Coach!"

Unfortunately for Coach Redfoot the Lobos would again shoot themselves in the foot. After an impressive opening drive led by James Wright and some clutch conversions by Austin a bad pitch by the freshman QB would lead to their third turnover of the day. But again the Lobo defense would respond. The Lobo offense would drive again but an 8 yd sack on 1st down and a stuffed run on 2nd would lead to a third and long. For the third time of the day though, the Red Raider defense would get burned on a blitz. Attempting to bring the nickel corner on the blitz along with the safety, the Texas Tech defense would leave itself exposed the big play. And for the third time today Austin would make em pay. This time hitting Chris Hernandez for a 39 yd TD pass giving the Lobos the 21-14 lead. The rest of the quarter would be a defensive stalemate. However after much of the 3rd looked like the Lobos were in control of the game a questionable fake punt would set up the Red Raiders perfectly.

Heading into the 4th the Red Raiders had incredible field position and they would capitalize. Baron Batch would reach paydirt for the 2nd time of the day tying the game at 21-21. From there on the game was a barn burner. On the second play of the following drive Austin would hit TE Lucas Reed for a big play. But again their drive would fizzle out and force the Lobos to punt. However the Lobo defense would rise again. Carmen Messina the captain and leader of the Lobo defense would make an incredible strip of Baron Batch leading to an Emmanuel McPhearson recovery! New Mexico though would be unable to capitalize as Austin's 3rd down pass to a wide open Thomas would be batted down at the line certainly saving what would've been the go ahead TD. Then it was Texas Tech's turn to make the boneheaded play. Driving on the Lobo defense, the Red Raiders would dink and dunk on the Lobo secondary. Then Potts would drop back and find Swindell across the middle who would race to the 3 yd line before being dragged down. But hold it as Texas Tech's center Kweon would be called for clipping moving the ball back to the 24. Then it was the Pete Gardner show as as he would sack Potts back to back times forcing Texas Tech into kicking a 49 yd FG. But Matt Williams would hook it left sending it off the left upright. That would leave 1:51 left for the Lobo offense.

Austin would lead his Lobos back on the field with chance to win the game. It wouldn't take long. The young QB on first play would hit senior Bryant Williams for a big gain but then would be dropped for a 14 yd loss on a sack. He would make up for it though as for the 4th time of the day the Red Raider defense would bring pressure and get burned. Again Chris Hernandez found himself wide open this time for 63 yds and the go ahead TD! 28-21 Lobos! But still time for Potts and this offense had already showed it could produce in 2 minute drill at end of 1st half. The first play of scrimmage sophomore free safety Freddy Young would drop an easy interception. Then Pete Gardner would strike again dragging Potts down for his 3rd sack of the day. But Potts would come through on 3rd and long completing a first down pass to Leong. Then Rainey would hit Potts while passing forcing an errant throw. 2nd down Texas Tech attempts to catch New Mexico off guard with a draw but Gardner isn't fooled dragging down Batch after only a short gain. But again Potts would respond with a big pass play over the middle. Spiking the ball, Texas Tech now had 26 seconds and 40 yds to go. 2nd down is an incomplete pass. Then on 3rd and 10 Potts looks deep and launches it 40 yards into the endzone..... Where Deshawn Mills picks it off! End of game Lobos win!!!!

After the game Coach Redfoot would say, "I'm so proud of these kids. They haven't really felt what its like to win over the past few years so for us to get this is big. That team we just beat is talented so that says something with us pulling this out. We'll let the kids enjoy it then get back to it next week with them Utes coming into town." Austin would finish just a few yards shy of 400 and 4 TDs thus making up for his 3 turnovers. Meanwhile Chris Hernandez finished with player of the game honors with 5 rec 145 yds and 2 big second half TDs.

                  Wynn Carves Up Lobo Defense

Albuquerque, NM -- The New Mexico Lobos entered University Stadium last night riding high off their 28-21 win over the Red Raiders. The Lobo defense had been impressive in the 1st 2 games holding explosive offenses of Oregon and Texas Tech to an average of 26 points. However in their Mountain West opener they had no answer for Jordan Wynn, Devonte Christopher, Eddie Wide III, and the Utah defense as the Utes pounded New Mexico 42-13.

The first half thought looked like the Lobos were in a battle again. On an impressive opening drive Austin led the New Mexico offense on a 13 play 52 yd drive in first 4:42 of the game. Unfortunately for the home crowd the drive would stall out and lead to the first FG of the year for James Aho. A 40 yarder that would give the Lobos an early 3-0 lead. But it didn't take long for the #17 Utah offense to respond. On 3rd and five Wynn hit sophomore Devonte Christopher on a drag route who then broke 3 tackles and sprinted for an 82 yd TD an NCAA record long. On the sideline Coach Redfoot was livid. For the 2nd straight week his defense had given up a record long score on the opening drive. The Utes had a 7-3 lead. The rest of quarter would be another solid drive by the Lobos that would again end in an Aho 29 yd FG. Putting the score at 7-6 Utes at the end of the 1st. But just before the quarter ended Wynn would open up the new drive with another bomb to Christopher who in 2 catches in the 1st quarter was well over 100 yds receiving.

The 2nd quarter would start with more Utah offense. On 3rd down Wynn would take the ball on the option keeper and plow his way for a first down. Then Wide III would gash the Lobo defense up the middle. It appeared the Utes were about to power their way into the endzone but the Lobo defense finally responded. On 3rd down from the 21 yd line Wynn would role right and launch a pass for the corner endzone. However New Mexico's Anthony Hooks would be there for the interception. Coming into the day Wynn had thrown 8 Tds and 0 Int against Pittsburgh and UNLV. The two teams would exchange punts on three and outs. Then the Lobo offense struck for the big play. On a simple drag route over the middle Tarean Austin would hit Lamaar Thomas for a 73 yd score. Thomas made one spin move and was off to the races giving the Lobos the lead 13-7. But that would be the last time New Mexico did anything positive on offense. To finish the half out Utah would score twice, one being set up by an Austin interception. Heading into half the Utes lead 21-13.

The 2nd half was ugly if you are a Lobo fan. Another interception by Austin and is inability to move the football would lead to Coach Redfoot pulling the true freshman for redshirt sophomore BR Holbrook who would fare no better. The Utes on the other hand couldn't be stopped. Jordan Wynn executed Whillingham's offense to perfection throwing 2 TDs in the 3rd quarter. Then in the 4th he would late the running game take over. A late fumble on punt return by Ty Kirk would led to Eddie Wide III's 2nd rushing TD of the day and put the final score at 42-13.

After the game Coach Redfoot had this to say, "I'm very disappointed with how we competed on defense. They have a good offense but we should make em earn it more than we did. Offensively we were pathetic. First 3 games and we have 11 turnovers which is inexcusable. We all got to get better if we wanna be successful." When asked if the Lobos had a QB controversy Coach Redfoot sarcastically responded, "You need 2 QBs to have that. Right now we have 2 kids who need to grow up if they wanna compete at this level." He would later state that Austin would start the next game against UNLV. This loss drops the Lobos to 1-2 (0-1) and moves the Utes to 3-0 (1-0).

                    Close Battle in the Desert

Las Vegas, NV -- Trying to rebound from the beating at the hands of the Utes, Coach Redfoot led his team into Sam Boyd Stadium looking for their first road win and conference win of the season. Their opponents UNLV Rebels had gotten off to an even worse start than the Lobos going 0-3 (0-1) to start the year. However their record is a little misleading as two their losses came on the road at top 15 teams Utah and Wisconsin. Their other loss was a close battle to Idaho where a late TD gave the Vandals the win. Both teams brought in poorly rated defenses as New Mexico's ranks #114 overall and UNLV #117. With Lobos starting running back Dennis still sidelined and true freshman Austin struggling at QB, New Mexico fans were wondering where they would get any offense. The Rebels brought in a solid running attack headed by 5th year senior Channing Trotter. This was a key game for both teams as both really needed a win to help keep their early bowl hopes alive. And they both played like it today....

The first half saw the emergence of defense. Shockingly most of the game was controlled by the low ranked defenses. Winning the toss the Rebels deferred giving the Lobos the ball to start the game. A clutch third and 9 conversion pass to James Wright kept the opening drive alive but two plays later a sack would end it. Next the Rebels would put together one of their best drives of the game. Channing Trotter gashed the Lobo defense inside and out. Mike Slaten the New Mexico defensive coordinator attempted to bring pressure inside to stop the holes and UNLV went over top for a big third down conversion to TE Anthony Vidal. After converting three 3rd downs the Rebels found themselves inside the redzone however they couldn't capitalize. On third down a wide open Knutson would drop an easy TD catch in the back of the endzone forcing the Rebels to kick a field goal giving them a 3-0
lead. The rest of the quarter would be an exchange of punts.

The early part of the 2nd would be the same as the end of the 1st with another exchange of punts. Then the Rebels would move again. On 2nd down senior Omar Clayton would find star receiver Mark Barfield over the middle for a big play. Later in the drive on 3rd and short Trotter break through the defense for a big gain. But the Lobo defense would step up forcing the Rebels into a long FG. The 52 yd attempt would fall just short of the mark giving the Lobos outstanding field position. The next series of plays would be one of the weirdest/exciting moments of the game. On second play of the drive Wright would take a handoff and run over right tackle for a short 8 yd gain however he would fumble the ball. Immediately sophomore wideout Lamaar Thomas would scoop and make what many thought at the time would be the play of the game. Scooping the ball up Thomas broke free of one tackle and then spun around another defender and raced all the way to paydirt for the go ahead TD! But the Lobos excitement was short lived as after a booth review it would show that Wright's knee was down before the ball came out. Taking the points off the board would hurt even more on the next play as Austin rolls right and is drilled just as he releases. The ball would fly straight into the hands of true freshman corner Sidney Hodge who would take it all the way back for the Rebels score. Putting the game at 10-0 UNLV. The 14 point swing put all the momentum with the home team. Before the half would end though Austin would lead a small 2 minute drill that ended with a 44 yd FG putting the game at 10-3 Rebels at half.

Reporter: "Coach that 14 pt swing was huge. What did you tell your kids after that swing?"

Coach Redfoot: "Just told em to keep their heads on straight and stay in this thing. It's far from over we just gotta finish some drive. Our defense is playing well need the offensive line to pick it up and let Austin and the boys make some plays."

Reporter: "Good luck in the second half coach!"

Rebels opening drive would get a bit of a boost with a third down wheel pass to Cooper but eventually it would fizzle out. The Lobos however came out ready to play. After a short run by Wright, Tarean Austin would find veteran senior Bryant Williams across the middle on the slant for a big play. Williams would be clutch all day with 4 catches for 82 yards. Two plays later Coach Redfoot would reach into his back of tricks and pull a good one out. Taking the toss Wright would run right looking like a simple halfback toss play. The safety and corner would bite down hard like they had been doing all day except this time Wright pulls up and heaves it down field. Running wide open Thomas would haul the pass in and cruise in for the game tying 51 yd TD pass. After the game Coach Redfoot said about the play, "They were biting hard on the run. Their safeties were in the box most of the day so we thought we might fool em with that one." The score now 10-10 and would remain there till the 4th.

The 4th is where the game would be decided by the Lobos defense after and early quarter FG UNLV would put together an incredible 16 play 83 yd drive that would eat up 3 min of clock and give the Rebels the 17-13 lead. The Lobos would have to respond and they did. Disaster however almost struck on the 2nd play of the series as Wright would fumble after getting hit but Ty Kirk would pounce on the ball. A play later on 3rd and 9 Chris "Big Play" Hernandez would run wide open and Austin would hit em for the 70 yd TD pass!! The Lobos were on top again! 20-17! Then the Lobos defense would rise up. Omar Clayton would lead his team out hoping to make some 4th quarter magic happen. First two passes would be incomplete with Hooks breaking up the 2nd one. Then on 3rd and 10 Clayton would hit a wide open Payne but he couldn't hold onto it and dropped an easy first down conversion. With only 1:30 left the Rebels would go for it on 4th down. Dropping back Clayton looks left but Jonathan Bailey comes tearing off of left end and drives Clayton to the ground. Turnover on downs and New Mexico ball!!! After 3 quick run plays forcing the Rebels to burn all their timeout James Aho would make is 3rd FG of the day this one from 28 yds earning the kicker player of the game honors. Clayton would attempt one last comeback with 1:14 left. A surprise draw call picks up 20 yds and a first down for the Rebels but then the Lobos defense would close. After spiking the ball on first down the final 3 offensive plays would end in sack as Ugo Uzodinma and Pete Gardner would alternate bringing down the senior qb. A kneel down later and the Lobos had officially pulled one out on the road 23-17!!!

After the game when asked about equaling the previous win total of the former coach Locklsey in just 4 games Coach Redfoot said, "I said when I got this job I came here to win football games. We are still a long way away from where I want this team to be but it's always good to get a win especially on the road and in conference." The lost dropped the Rebels to 0-4 with 2 losses in conference and moved the Lobos back to .500 at 2-2 (1-1). They next return home to take on the undefeated UTEP Miners.

Miners Bury Lobos to Remain Undefeated

Albuquerque, NM -- Someone forgot to tell the Lobos they had a game today as Trevor Vittatoe and his #3 ranked passing offense obliterated the Lobos suspect secondary. And then to add insult to injury Donald Buckhram added 134 yds on the ground. The score said 51-21 but if possible the game was even worse than that. No review is necessary as most would just involve talking about how good UTEP was and how awful New Mexico was. The turnover bug continues to bite New Mexico as Austin threw 2 picks and Holbrook came in as well and threw one along with fumbling which would be returned for a UTEP td. James wright fumbled as well although he was one of the few bright spots rushing for 96 yds on 20 carries. He entered the game with only 160 yds on 60 carries and no TDs. He got his first of the season early in the game today. Lamaar Thomas on returns also showcased brilliance with 2 big returns. In the end though it was all Miners as they move to 5-0 (2-0) while New Mexico falls back under .500 at 2-3 (1-1). The Lobos have 2 weeks off to regroup and try and come back from this beat down.

                        BYE Week Breakdown

With these next two weeks being off weeks thought it would be good to break down how New Mexico Lobos have performed so far. Sitting at 2-3 (1-1) sadly they have doubled their win production of the past 2 years. Against Oregon, Texas Tech, and UNLV they forced close battles with the Lobos coming out on top in 2 of em. However there has also been a ton of bad. Utah and UTEP both beatdown the Lobos. Both QBs Jordan Wynn and Trevor Vittatoe ripped apart the secondary while Eddie Wide III and Donald Buckram did damage on the ground. With 7 games to go Coach Redfoot needs to make some big adjustments on both sides of the balls if New Mexico hopes to go bowling.

                        Offensive Breakdown
The 2010 Lobo offense has been the definition of inconsistent. At times it has produced some big time plays and long drives but other times it has turned the ball over way too much and been unable to find any kind of ground game. The 2 biggest problems have been the offensive line and QB play. With a veteran line Coach Redfoot was hoping to get more out of them but so far they have struggled. Austin has found himself in hot water in most games forcing him to make bad passes or even being hit while releasing forcing turnovers. The running game has also been abysmal. Although this should receive a boost with the return sophomore Demond Dennis to the starting lineup. The other problem has been turnovers. Headlining this has been true freshman Tarean Austin who has thrown 11 interception in 5 games. Coach Redfoot before the season warned that it would be a rocky road with a young QB but even he has struggled to remain patient yanking the young QB twice both during blowout losses, for sophomore backup BR Holbrook who has done nothing to challenge Austin. Coach Redfoot reiterated during the offweeks that Tarean would stay at the starter position but if he didn't like how he was performing would pull him for Holbrook.

QB Tarean Austin 62-137 1204 yds 10 TD 11 Int
HB James Wright 80 rushes 256 yds TD

It hasn't been all bad on the offensive side of the ball as the WR core has been a shining bright spot. Every big offensive play has been made by these young men. Hernandez has proven to be deadly in the slot while Williams has worked the middle well. These 2 seniors have provided great leadership and have been a key cog in both of New Mexico's wins. Lamaar Thomas and Ty Kirk are the best all around receivers. Playing at the split ends both have come through in the clutch especially Thomas who has big play ability and size. Both are just sophomores and have real bright futures for the red and silver. Lucas Reed at tight end has also shown to be a viable option in the passing game. Coach Redfoot would like to have two solid TEs for his offense but for now he will have to settle with Reed.

Bryant Williams 18 rec 324 yds
Lamaar Thomas 15 rec 254 yds 3 TD
Ty Kirk 12 rec 264 yds 3 TD
Chris Hernandez 9 rec 268 yds 4 TD
Lucas Reed 6 rec 145 yds TD

                        Defensive Breakdown
At times they've been spectacular at other times miserable. Somehow they contained the potent Oregon offense to only 24 points and kept Texas Tech at 28 both teams that could rack up points. But on the darker side they have surrendered 42 to Utah and 51 to UTEP. They have also struggled to force turnovers. And with an offense averaging 4 turnovers a game this has put the Lobos at a huge disadvantage.

Individually junior Carmen Messina and senior Peter Gardner have been monsters. Messina heading into the bye weeks, led the nation in solo tackles now after two weeks off is still 3rd with 31 and Gardner is tied with Wolfgramm of Washington State for the nation sack leader with 7. Recently Gardner's right hand man sophomore Ugo Udozinma has stepped up as well. The front four have been solid all season getting pressure on the QB. They have at times struggled getting run penetration highlighted by the fact that all of their opponents have had 100 yd individual rushing performances against them. Meanwhile besides Messina no other linebacker has stepped up. Neely has been able to play much because of the extensive use of the nickel and dime packages. Spencer Merritt has been average but has struggled in the run game and defending slot receivers.

Carmen Messina 39 total tackles 31 solo 8 assists 4 TFL FF
Peter Gardner 29 total tackles 24 solo 5 assists 10 TFL 7 sacks
                        Ugo Uzodinma 17 tackles 11 solo 6 assists 7 TFL 2 sacks
Spencer Merritt 15 tackles 11 solo 4 assists 3 TFL

The secondary has been porous. So many dropped interceptions and missed tackles have plagued the Lobo back 4. Freddy Young and Deshawn Mills have shown flashes of brilliance but both need to develop more. Anthony Hooks may lead the country in dropped interceptions. Matching up man to man he has done well but has been unable to make the big play. If the defense wants to take the next step the secondary must improve for the final 7 games.

Emmanuel McPhearson 24 total tackles 17 solo 7 assists 3 TFL sack 2 FR (ST beast)
Freddy Young 23 total tackles 15 solo 8 assists
Anthony Hooks 22 tackles 17 solo 5 assists 2 TFL Int
Bubba Forrest 18 tackles 12 solo 6 assists 2 TFL sack Int FF
Deshawn Mills 17 tackles 14 solo 3 assists TFL 2 Int

                        Looking Ahead
The schedule doesn't get any easier for the Lobos. Of their final 7 games only 3 are at home including an end of the year matchup against #5 TCU. Also is a 3 game roadtrip at archrival New Mexico State, solid Air Force, and struggling BYU. Wins against Wyoming, NMSU, BYU are musts if Lobos want a shot at a bowl game. Fortunately for New Mexico only 3 of the remaining opponents (Colorado State (4-3), Air Force (4-3), TCU (7-0)) have winning records. The end should be very interesting for New Mexico

                        Keys to Success
                        1. Reduce Turnovers
                        2. Find a Consistent Running Game
                        3. Become a Better Run Defense

If Coach Redfoot can get his team to accomplish one or two these keys then the Lobos will go bowling. If not they will be sitting at home. Overall not a suprising record for Lobos nor disappointing necessarily as they were predicted to finish last in the MWC. This is a very young team and that has been seen multiple times. Give this team time to grow and 2011 and 2012 might get interesting....

Two Turnovers for TDs Lead to 31-24 Lobo Loss

Albuquerque, NM -- San Diego State came in with a 3-3 record looking to stay perfect in the MWC. New Mexico after 2 weeks of rest hoped to redeem themselves after taking a beating from UTEP. Also returning to University Stadium was Demond Dennis. Out since first game of year due to foot stress fracture he hoped to make his impact on the game. He was only at 80% as he was ruled doubtful for the game. Coach Redfoot decided to give the sophomore the nod.

If someone was to draw up a script for a perfect opening drive then Brady Hoke did just that for his Aztecs. 10 plays 81 yds eating up 2:43 min with only one incompletion is how the Aztecs started the game. The impressive drive was capped off by 19 yd TD pass to San Diego State's star wideout Vincent Brown. The Lobos response wasn't what the 22,000 fans at University Stadium hoped it would be. On his second carry back from injury Dennis would fumble trying to fight for extra yardage. Brandon Davis would scoop and score from 27 yds out giving the Aztecs a 14-0 lead. Coach Redfoot could be seen throwing his headphones down on the sideline. But he would regain composure as would his team.

The 2nd quarter was all Lobos. After finishing off the late 1st qtr drive with a FG, New Mexico would find the endzone twice in the period. Bryant Williams would set up the first score with a clutch 3rd down catch. Demond Dennis would get his first rushing TD of the season with a leap over the pile from the 1. Williams would then score the second one himself going 20 yards on third down to put the game at 17-14 Lobos heading into half.

The 3rd quarter was a defensive battle with only the Aztecs breaking through. Midway through the quarter Lindley on 3rd and long would avoid pressure for about 3 seconds keeping the play alive before finding his favorite target of the day Dominique Sandifer for a big play into the redzone. Just two plays later Walter Kazee the backup running back would take the pitch and walk into the endzone from 8 yds out. The Aztecs had the lead again at 21-17.

4th quarter started with a FG by Azel making the score 24-17 Aztecs. The Lobos would try and respond. Tarean Austin who had played a fantastic game led his offense down the field. Scrambling twice to keep the drive alive along with hitting a few underneath routes. However the drive would stall an Aho would miss his first FG of the season from 44 yds out. After a quick 3 and out though the Lobos would have the ball again. But disaster would strike. Scrambling trying to avoid the sack and keep the play alive, Austin would try and throw the ball away, however he would be hit just as he released the attempted throway. The ball would fly straight into the hands of Darryn Lewis who would waltz in from 9 yards away putting the game at 31-17 Aztecs and really out of reach. The Lobos would find the endzone again later with a James Wright TD run but were unable to get the Aztecs off the field on the next posession. With 1 minute left and 3rd and long Lindley would seal the game as the junior found Sancifer for the 9th and final time across the middle for the game clinching first down. A kneel down later and the Aztecs had secured a 31-24 win.

Coach Redfoot was clearly disappointed in the press conference after the game. "We tried so hard to win that thing today but once again shot ourselves in the foot." He said during the press conference. "I mean they had 2 defensive touchdowns! That's ridiculous! We gotta have our heads on straight and come back next week looking to prove a point against Colorado State." Just like all season Tarean Austin was not available for comment after the game but teammate Bryant Williams said he was pretty upset. "Ya he feels bad about that last pick. He's a tough competitor and too lose like this is rough." On a positive note for the first time all season the Lobo defense did not allow a 100 yd rusher in fact they didn't even allow a 50 yarder. On the other hand Dennis's return did little for the rushing attack of the Lobos as he only garnered 22 yards. After the game he said he was only 80% but there was no way he was sitting out this game. New Mexico falls to 2-4 (1-2) while the Aztecs improve to 4-3 (3-0) with still a chance at MWC title. New Mexico hits the road next week to take on Colorado State.

                              - Oklahoma putting together a real nice class early
                              - Bama favored for Bailey and Sherman; also have signed 3 other 4 star talent within the top 30
                              - Texas leads for Jackson; could end up with #2 and #3 RB in country
                              - Many think Zach Jack is a LSU lock at this point

                              New Mexico Recruiting
The Lobos have added 3 more commits. Two 3 stars and one 2 star. The guard Lee Thomas and quarterback Kyle Dailey are 3 stars. The two positions of need scholly wise for New Mexico are guard and middle linebacker. With Thomas and Dukes already committing and many think Matt Smith is close to following, the Lobos have addressed that need. Dailey is a scrambling QB and the #2 player in New Mexico who will no doubt redshirt in order to develop. The other commit a 2 star tackle Sean Thomas was an instate battle between New Mexico and New Mexico State that the Lobos pulled out. He should provide some depth and if developed properly could start in a few years.

2 stars Jarrett Williams, Rico Johnson, and Taylor Weaver along with 3 star and #3 player in the state Charlie Watkins are all soft commits at the moment to New Mexico. Williams and Johnson are both corners who could provide bodies at a position with only 4 players on scholarship at the moment. Weaver is a raw talent at outside linebacker. Watkins is a big kid that could plug some holes in the middle. There is already solid depth at that position for Lobos so he could redshirt. The Lobos did lose out on running back Brian Downs. The 3 star power back has decided to play for North Texas next year. Should be interesting to see how Coach Redfoot's first recruiting class fills out
