Re: Living in the Shadows – A Patrick Ewing Jr. Story

Cool thanks guys! Excited about the call up too!

Hey hoopla32, yea its a different perspective to take alright and i've found it enjoyable. Lots of undrafted players from draft such as Ben Hansbrough and Scottie Hopson etc that could make good stories. I'll follow if you do a story like that.

For the NBDL, i assume you are going to sim the first season. But before you do, go and edit all the fake NBDL players age to 45. Then when you sim the season they will all( or at least 99percent) will retire. The cpu will fill from the free agency pool and undrafted rookies. Now if your player gets drafted what you can do is trade him / release him and sign him up by the d-leagues nba affiliate team. and then assign him. one extra touch i made was to trade each drafted player from the other night to their correct team. gives it more realism i think. I'm doing via association mode, because i can easily change teams whenever i need. Sometimes i play on player lock and sometimes as the whole team.

Its time consuming to get it all set up correctly, but as you can see it makes for and enjoyable and interesting story! Realism for me is the key, so look out for your favorite drafted rookies to be playing with their proper teams from now on!

If you take the age of all the current NBDL players generated by the game and make them 45/44, they will all retire at the end of the season (for the most part). To fill the NBDL rosters, the game will send undrafted rookies and free agents to those teams. That's how he got real players there.

        Ewing’s Epilogue

“Great victory on the road to start tonight! I'm on top of the world today, first i sign a 10 day contract with the Hornets, and then we play like this! I had 16 points in 12 minutes, 2 more than Carl Landry had in 32 minutes! I also had 4 boards an assist and block to boot! Great start. It's going to be easy to settle in here, i already know most of the players. The Hornets basically have the same roster as last year. They've just added Shannon Brown, Peja Stojakovic, Eric Dampier and Keith Bogans.”

" Kevin Martin and Shannon Brown had a real shootout tonight. Martin was unstoppable with 41. Both played equally bad defence however and ran wild on offence. Trevor Ariza had 19 points and 9 boards and was solid on both ends of the court. CP3 had only 8 points, but he had 5 rebounds and 17 assists, he really runs this show. Anytime i got open, he hit me with an on point pass. Such a luxury to have a guy like him around. Jarrett Jack also played the 6th man role well, with 15 big points off the bench."

"The Rockets main threat was Martin as i mentioned. But late in the game the Rockets played a lot of small ball. With Lowry, Dragic and Jonny Flynn on the court, Martin played the 4. That was a big reason Carl Landry was off his game tonight, having to chase Kevin around. Flynn had 16 points and Lowry 12. The Rockets big Lithuanian Centre Motiejunas was strong with 15 points and 12 rebounds. A tough match tonight, but on paper we expected to scrape a win."

"I'm really delighted to get another chance here in New Orleans. I turned down the Kings, Blazers and Warriors. Mostly because i know the system, players and the City of New Orleans already. They are currently 3rd in the West, which is another big reason! Think i'll go get the latest standings and have a look at the Hornets site on the flight to New Orleans. Playing Charlotte tomorrow at home. Must try and find a place to crash for the night!"

Thanks. I was leaning towards Hansbrough, Jereme Richmond or Hopson. I think I can get a pretty good story out of Hansbrough and Richmond.

I already downloaded an updates roster off of 2K Share with all the rookies on their correct teams and the players that were part of draft night trades on the correct team. I played an NBDL game last night just to get a feel for it, and I'm definitely going with your idea of making all the generic players 45 years old. Everyone was just so awful. There were so many routine plays that ended up being a turnover or missed wide-open layup.

Also, did you start the Association controlling the Hornets or is there a way to switch user controlled teams mid-Association?

yea it can get frustrating, didnt like the d-league when i played there with my player. i just took over one of the affiliates of maine red claws, the bobcats. then used them to play the d-league games. i set all rosters management etc to on, so as not to interfere with that team.make sure d-league games is on in assoc settings too. you can change team at anytime, just go to general manager and then select resign position. make sure you check up on which nba teams are currently linked to d-league teams.good luck with it!

              Ewing’s Epilogue

“Yes Yes Yes man its good to be back in New Orleans! Really enjoyed tonights game. 18 points, 5 boards and a block. I just dunked all over the Bobcats tonight! CP3 just kept finding me on cuts to the basket, and i threw down one nasty alley-oop too!”

" Shannon Brown kept up his high scoring feats with 22 tonight. This was in no small part to CP3 who had 20 pts and 13 assists. He set up most of my baskets, and Browns too. Trevor Ariza kept up his high level of performance, scoring 15 and grabbing 9 rebounds. Okafor also filled the stat book up tonight with 13 pts, 8 rebounds, 3 assists, 1 steal and 2 blocks. He reminds me of Eddy Curry only more athletic! I outscored Landry again tonight. He played 26 minutes and only had 10 pts and 3 rebounds! Overall a good win tonight against a Bobcats team who are somehow in the playoff race in the East!

"Corey Maggette showed again why he is the Bobcats leader. His 26 points kept them competitive all night long. Tyrus Thomas has moved to play center and i can see why. His quickness gets him past most centers. He had 20 pts and 8 rebounds. There is quite a battle for the starting point guard position at Charlotte. DJ Augustin had 16 pts, 6 rebs and 9 assists. Rookie Kemba Walker meanwhile had 15pts, 4 rebs and 10 assists of the bench!"

"I was talking to Jarrett Jack on the flight to New Orleans last night, he said i can stay in his house tonight! Great stuff, could be looking for places to stay for the next few days. Off to Oklahoma City tomorrow. We play them on the 24th. Now time to check out the standings again..."

Did you just kind of pick a somewhat random time to move Ewing Jr. up to the NBA? Or did the CPU actually make the move for you?

And 34 points in 25 minutes on 14/22 shooting in your first two NBA games...nice!!

                  Ewing’s Epilogues: Episode 5

Well it only took 25 games and playing out of my skin. But I finally have an NBA contract. Even if it is only a 10 day one. It started on the 21st of January and ends on the 31st. So far i'm averaging 17 ppg and 4.5 rpg! Putting some pressure on Carl Landry to perform. I grabbed some extra minutes off him last night because i was performing so well. Had 4 nasty dunks and one crazy alley-oop. I've got to make the most of this contract, and hopefully get another one. The medics reckon West will be out at least 20 days. I hope to be around here that long!

The Hornets are really making a stong push for the top of the West this year. The signing of Shannon Brown has really added to the team. He seems to be fitting in well. CP3 as usual is an MVP candidate. I've also been impressed with Trevor Ariza. His work rate is phenomenal. The Thunder are top of the West and will be a big test for us tomorrow. The Clippers acquired Rodney Stuckey in the offseason and he is really helping their young team flourish.

Over in the East the Heat are steaming ahead. The Celtics are 6.5 games behind and they look very good. Rondo has just picked up an injury. That means Iverson will start at the point. Really hope he does well. Dad's Magic are up to 3rd now, off the back off an 8-2 run lately. Things seem to be really clicking for them. He sent me a text the other night to congratulate me, and wish me good luck. Looking forward to meeting up with him in February for all star weekend. Have a lot to catch up on, we have both been so busy its hard to keep in touch! Will have to change that.

Here's that alley-oop from last night!

Here's the latest in the playoff races, makes good reading for this ball club...

I moved him up because the D-League showcase was scheduled for the time the Claws played the Vipers. Usually get a few signings around that time of season. I felt it was time to sign him up to a team with those stats. Cpu unfortunately didnt think so, he is only rated 61 still though, will try and train him up more. Have done a draft timeline of when i want certain things to happen and will stick to that as much as possible. Helps to do one out before you start as a back-up. Have just gotten used to his shot release. Most of those points have been from dunks and lay-ups, off pick and rolls with CP3.

                      Thanks a lot!!

I just got through with all the setup -- made all the generic players 44/45, simmed the first season, had the draft and now am ready to play.

I'm going with Ben Hansbrough. I like the angle of that story more: Big East Player of the Year, undrafted, always living in his older brother's shadow, (even though Tyler isn't an NBA star or anything) and the sibling in the league can provide something. He improved from a 61 overall to a 63 overall by simming the 1st season and making everyone 44/45 worked out great. Now every team has real players that I've actually heard of.

                        Ewing’s Epilogue

“Disappointed to lose tonight but beaten by the better team. My performance isnt something i'm happy about either. Only 2 field goals. One of them was an awesome dunk that got the crowd on their feet, and the other a jumpshot. 4 rebounds is ok, but at least 6-6 from the free throw line is a positive.”

"The Thunder just had too many threats for us to handle, despite the fact we are very strong defensively. Westbrook had 19, Durant 18, Harden 17. Durant was quiet, but Ariza done a superb job on him. He made him pass out of drives a lot and forced 3 turnovers. But Serge Ibaka was a beast, grabbing a double-double, 13 points and 15 rebounds, mostly off Durant misses. Durant went 6-18 from the floor. Lucky for him he has such a good supporting cast."

"CP3 was excellent again, and his 21 pts, 9 rebounds and 8 assists kept us in it all night. Carl Landry jumped out of the slump he had been in lately by scoring 16 points. But he rebounded poorly with only 1 board. Emeka had his back though, and he grabbed a game high 16 boards. Jarrett Jack had a bunch of points of the bench again (13) and lit a fire under us in the 4th quarter. But it was a little too late. Otherwise the scoring was in single figures from everyone."

"Back to New Orleans now before playing the Lakers on Thursday the 26th. The Lakers have been struggling this year so far and lie a game outside the playoffs, behind the NBA champs Dallas Mavericks. They are struggling to play like last season. Back in Jack's house again tonight, Cheers man!"

Ewing Jr. had to guard every one tonight, including the Black Mamba.

                          Ewing’s Epilogue

“What a shootout tonight! Wow! Pity we came out on the wrong side of the scoreline though. Was like a shootout at the OK Corral! Considering all the injuries we had, i'm happy we stayed so close. Trevor Ariza got injured in the first quarter. He dived after a ball into the crowd and fell hard on his shoulder. He went back to the locker room and didnt return. Then his replacement Stojakovic turned on his knee after grabbing a rebound in traffic. Oh yeah this was 4 minutes after Ariza's injury!”

"So up steps Quincy Pondexter who hadnt been playing much all season. Metta World Peace starts bullying him around (World Peace huh? Try sorting out your own attitude first Ron!) on his way to 14 points, 13 rebounds and 7 assists. Kobe Bryant was making Shannon Brown wish he was still on the same team, as he ran him ragged all night long. Brown fouled out in the last minute of the 3rd quarter, letting his frustration get the better of him. Brown still had 25 points and 10 rebounds at this stage though, not bad for a frustrating game!

"So with Brown, Ariza and Stojakovic gone, who would coach Williams turn to? Ewing Jr of course. I had played 18 minutes at this point, subbing for Carl Landry who was excellent tonight (26 points) and Pondexter who couldnt get into the game. Brown had moved to small forward, and him fouling out left me to step into the fold. I knew this was my big chance. I scored 14, grabbed 12 boards and dished out 4 assists. On top of that i played hella defense. 2 steals and 2 block, and numerous forced turnovers off contested shots. I made World Peace work for his every shot."

"Because i was playing so well on (Ron) Coach Williams decided to try me out on Kobe for the last 4 minutes. A role usually occupied by the injured Ariza, I forced Kobe into 2 turnovers and blocked 1 of his shots! The problem then was Pau Gasol was owning Landry on offense, scoring 29 points. In the end, the Lakers had too many weapons all over the floor. Will be a tough few weeks without David West, Ariza and Stojakovic. But i hope i get a chance to shine in their absence. First chance tomorrow night @ Dallas."

Ewing Jr. had his work cut out guarding Dirk tonight, but with Carl Landry, they held him to 12 points.

“Another loss tonight. But to the reigning NBA champs. They really played up to their usual standards and completely torched us. Caron Butler had 24, Barea had 22 with 11 assists. Terry had 13 and then Dirk had 12 points and 12 rebounds. Now that i'm proud of. Dirk was relatively quiet tonight, mostly down to me guarding him when i was on the court! I forced a few tough shots, but mostly made him pass it off. Landry done a good job on him too”

"Butler however was a different story. He was on fire all night long. Not surprising when Pondexter was assigned him on defense. I say assigned, cos he definitely did not guard him. I only had about 5 minutes on him, and for those 5 minutes he missed 4 shots. I dont understand why Coach Williams did not use me on him, and Carl on Dirk more often. It really worked well. Carl had an excellent game, leading us with 28 points. Shannon Brown had 20 points. CP3 was quiet, kept busy by J. Kidd and Barea, he had 9 points and 9 assists."

"I was happy enough with my stat line. 13 points, 6 rebounds and 7 assists. I could have had 15 assists if any of the guys hit their wide open shots. Was kind of frustrating, and a big reason we fell behind. So i've played 5 with the Hornets, won 2 and lost 3. We've lost 2 players, one starter in Ariza. I think i've acquitted myself well so far. Putting points on the board, rebounding well and playing some great defense. I've one game left on this contract, Sunday @ the Grizzlies. Hope to persuade management to keep me on longer!"

This is simply awesome. It's along the lines of what I was shooting for when I did a D-League story a few months back but I didn't stick with it. Fantastic job, eager to see if the Hornets sign Ewing Jr once the 10-day is up!
