Les Miles is a better version of Houston Nutt minus the cell hone calls and always looking for a better job. I give Miles all the credit in the world for sticking around at LSU. Nutt called a couple of schools about their openings w/o permission.

 Re: SouthEastern Conference Predictions

And this is why I like Wilson better as Arkansas's QB - he makes fewer stupid mistakes. Against LSU, Bama and a couple other games he went soft in the head a couple times. The last INT to the DE on the zone blitx, I just have to say good call by the DC for the Buckeyes. It isn't like Kniles Davis played horrible against Alabama, he just didn't get many carries. Arkansas' strength was their passing game and Alabama's largest defensive weakness was their pass defense. The only way Arkansas was going to win that game was through the air with a flawless performance from Mallett, his mistakes cost them the game.

Anyways, Arkansas did have a running game last year, Kniles Davis alone averaged over 100 yards rushing per game. So is your point that if Alabama wasn't so good against the run (what their defense is known for being good at) you would've beat them?

I suppose if Arkansas had a rush defense last year Auburn would've gone down ugly, too.Comment

 Re: SouthEastern Conference Predictions

No, he used an Arkansas cell phone to call other programs. It's on the phone records retrieved by the freedom of information act a guy sued for.

Let is also be noted he rarely used the phone for recruiting. Once it was revealed he was not allowing Malzahn to call plays and was phasing him out I wanted him gone. Even more when I found out all the contents of the cell phone records. I firmly believe Nick Saban would have won the SEC and probably the NC with the talent the 2006 Arkansas team.Originally posted by pdf [urlhttp://cache.deadspin.com/assets/resources/2007/04/HoustonDaleNuttinfo.pdf[/url] ]Connection to the Head Coaching Position with North Carolina State University - Detail
On December 3, 2006, two phone calls were placed by Nutt to a Raleigh, North
Carolina phone number (919-819-8333) at 10:41 am and 10:43 am.
At 10:49 am, a phone call was placed to Nutt’s agent, Jimmy Sexton.
At 12:39 pm and 12:40 pm, another set of calls were placed to North Carolina
and another to Jimmy Sexton, respectively.
Additional calls were placed to Sexton at 1:43 pm, 2:23 pm, 3:36 pm, 7:45 pm
 and 8:09 pm.
At 2:44 pm, Nutt made a phone call to 919-819-8335, in Garner, North Carolina.
On December 5, 2006, Nutt placed a call to a Raleigh, North Carolina phone
 number (919-513-7135) at 12:39 pm.
After the call to North Carolina, Nutt called his secretary twice.
At 1:11 pm, he received another call from Raleigh from the cell phone number
919-819-8335. That call lasted one minute.
Nutt called the previous number back three minutes later. That call lasted seven
 minutes.
Twenty-seven minutes after that call ended, Nutt’s secretary returned his
 previous phone call.Comment

Let's not go there man. I agree with you, we got screwed on a couple of calls, but we still gave up long kick returns, allowed Cam newton to run for way too many yards and Tyler Wilson threw a dumb interception. Had our defense stood up then we would have had a reason to complain.Comment

 Re: SouthEastern Conference Predictions

I agree, but the fact that Alabama will have a young first time starter in the game may well even things out. I really feel it will be Bama's depth at DB vs. Arkansas's unending WR corp (Childs, Adams, Wright & Hamilton) and then at the same time trying to stop the run.

A little OT, but I had a stray thought about the Arkansas O vs the Bama D. Put them on the same team and that team would be unbeatable. Saying that, Arkansas's D is no slouch this year. I really feel that Wilson is a smarter QB than Mallett, which will cut those dumb INT's down.Comment

 Re: SouthEastern Conference Predictions

Yeah, I'm being overly optimistic having LSU at the top. We have the talent, especially since we got a decent QB transfer in Zack Mettenberger. But knowing Miles, he'll let Jordan Jefferson lose at least 2 games before he ever seriously considers putting in Mettenberger. He'll probably still have Jarrett Lee 2nd string and let him throw a half a dozen pick 6's as well before resorting to Mettenberger, so if LSU only loses 2 games...

I love Miles as a recruiter, but being the only top tier school in the lush recruiting lands of Louisiana...So yeah, he needs another National Championship...soon, to validate his new contract extension.Comment

 Re: SouthEastern Conference Predictions

The same reason why I have Arkansas winning the SEC is why I have Bama not winning it.

 Gamebreaking WRs.

Knile Davis won't face a loaded box all season because no Defensive coordinator in the league is going to have the cajones to leave their DBs one on one with Childs, Adams, Wright, and Hamilton. Because of this, I expect Davis to have some huge rushing games.

Trent Richardson, for all of his talent, is going to be facing loaded boxes all season...at least until a "Green" QB can prove he can make the defense pay for bringing their safeties down. As solid as Darius Hanks and Marquis Maze are..and they are very solid SEC caliber WRs..they aren't Julio Jones and they don't exactly strike fear in the hearts of SEC defenses in regards to consistently beating DBs one on one.

If McCarron/Sims can get one of these WRs to become a legit, big time threat outside, then Bama could win the league. But I think their offense will struggle, especially early, as the Bama ground game will be the focus of every defense.AUBURN TIGERS

I'm telling ya'll... people are sleeping on former Buckeye-turned-Bammer WR Duron Carter. He's gonna surprise a lot of folks this year, I would not be surprised to see him as their top WR at the end of the year.Ohio State Buckeyes | Carolina Panthers | Charlotte Hornets | Cincinnati RedsComment

 Re: SouthEastern Conference Predictions

I agree with this 100%. I don't think Sim/McCarron will get sorted out til week 6, by that time Arkansas will be long gone. I do have to say that Sim/McCarron will be practicing against the best D in the country, potentially, but we said that about Bama's D last year. If Duron Carter melds quickly it might be a whole different story. The same reason why I have Arkansas winning the SEC is why I have Bama not winning it.

However, we have a JUCO transfer rated among the top DT's in the SEC, though he hasn't played a down. Robert Thomas, 6-3 & 325, is Terrence Cody lite.

All this added together I really think it's Arkansas's year, dependant on whether Arkansas's balanced offense can score and stop Bama from scoring. I think it's gonna be a 20-17 game for the Hogs.Originally posted by ESPN SEC blogByran Jones and DeQuinta Jones missed spring due to injury, but will be back this fall and there?s a wealth of depth behind them. Junior college transfer Robert Thomas might be the best and most athletic option in the middle is primed to break out.

If Mettenberg starts and becomes the QB I think he can be LSU/Arkansas could be the other GOY candidate. Crazily enough we could run the SEC and lose a game - there's still Texas A&M. Though Vonn Miller is gone A&M is still a dark horse. If Arkansas's SOS isn't #1 I'd like to see whose is.

In all it's gonna be a crazy year for CFB, reminiscent of 2006.Comment
