Re: Engage 8!!!
Michigan ran it two years ago. It didn't work any better for them, heh.

Re: Engage 8!!!
I use engage 8 a decent amount vs. Rushing teams. It's better than goal line as the DL is not spaced so tightly.Streaming PC & PS5 games, join me most nights after 6:00pm ET on TwitchTV https://www.twitch.tv/shaunh20

Re: Engage 8!!!
Under Saban, LSU ran engage 8 quite a lot. The point of the play is to send more blitzers than the o-line can handle and get to the quarterback quickly. It's meant for situations where the offense needs more than 5-7 yards for a first and therefore needs to run deeper routes.
Granted it doesn't really work too well in video game football when you as a qb can see the entire field and not just free blitzers in your face..Last edited by arobbi3; 07-09-2011, 06:52 PM.If for any reason you're not completely satisfied, I hate you.Comment

Re: Engage 8!!!
The way I see it, Engage 8 is a way to hide an all out blitz. If you come out in goalline then your opponent will recognize that easily an audible to a pass quickly. I like Engage 8 when I feel a run is coming. I like it over run commit because if you guess run but guess the direction wrong you'll still get burned bad. Its also good if you're playing an opponent that can be flustered and might not make quick decisions (in particular if they come out in 2WR sets).
I don't run it often but it does serve a purpose and can be effective.Comment

Re: Engage 8!!!
It's only a bad play if you are overusing it and getting burned. When called in the right situations, it works. I've had bad results with it, but I've also had great results. Just has to be used in moderation.Comment

Re: Engage 8!!!
Custom playbooks = this play is no longer going to be SEEN by me. The CPU will never use it either.

Re: Engage 8!!!
Engage 8 I've found to be useful in run situations, especially short yardage situations because the blitzing linebackers have good angles. But if they decide to go play action or pass, and you don't get to the qb, you are going to get burned. Bascially, a defense for d coordinators who are riverboat gamblers, and I'm that way on trying to stop the run. But in 3rd and long situations, I rarely use it because I believe in dropping back at least five to six guys in coverage ,and trying to get pressure with my front four or one blitzer.Comment

Re: Engage 8!!!
I used to think it was an interesting gamble blitz, worthy of being called half a dozen times a game, but now it's a pointless excercise.
Since last year's adjustments were set, reducing the blitz aggressiveness for all teams, I decided not to call as many blitzes either. The results were better. Giving up fewer yards on first down, and fewer third down conversions since I was sending more players into coverage.
Like NDAlum said, custom playbooks = bye bye engage 8!Comment

Re: Engage 8!!!
I hated engage 8 in '11 (and '10) because the CPU uses it WAY too often which almost always results in a big play for me. In '12, I'll likely create custom PBs for 4-3, 3-4, 3-3-5, 4-2-5, and multiple where the only difference is that I've removed all engage 8s and I'll have the CPU use one of those PBs.Favorite Teams:

Re: Engage 8!!!
Only time I ever use it is if I choose it by mistake..."In the morning he would read the Bible with another coach. Then, in the afternoon, he would go out and cheat kids who had probably saved up money from mowing lawns to buy those raffle tickets. That's Jim Tressel."Comment

Re: Engage 8!!!
I just used this formation in the last demo game I played. 3rd + 2 called this play in conjunction with calling the "run middle" and stuffed FSU cold to force a puntComment
