Taylor capped off a stunning career with taking home a slew of awards, including the coveted Heisman Trophy. He routinely made plays by himself and will go down as one of the best Backs to ever play the game. He will surely be missed and he leaves with records that might never be broken.

Tillman will go down as not only the best defensive player in Carolina's short history, but one of the best of all time. Nobody could wreak havoc in opposing backfields like Tillman could. In four years, he amassed 59 sacks (breaking Derrick Thomas’ record of 52), an average of nearly 15 sacks a season, as well as over 100 tackles for loss. An elite defensive presence for sure.

Carolina Joins ACC, Replaces Boston College

“Breaking news out of ESPN Dallas/Fort Worth, and this is quite a doozy. TCU has apparently had second thoughts about joining the Big East, and athletic director Chris Del Conte has declined the offer extended to the Horned Frogs that would make them the ninth team in the Big East conference.”

It was an eye-opening change of events, that's for sure. Everyone thought that TCU would have it made in an automatic qualifying conference, but the thrilling prospect of being a BCS buster in the Mountain West was possibly too good to resist.

“Today is a disappointing day for the Big East Conference,” replied commissioner John Marinatto. “We're disappointed to see TCU go back to the Mountain West. Their success as a program would've been a very welcome addition to our roster, and seeing them reconsider is a tough pill to swallow.”

When asked about the now vacant invitation, Marinatto replied, “It's tough to say right now, but we are looking to become a ten team conference. We're already in talks with Villanova, but to say we wouldn't extend TCU's invitation to someone else isn't a complete lie.”

And it wasn't. The Big East eventually extended an offer to the ACC's Boston College to become the ninth/potentially tenth team in the Big East.

“I think Boston College is a great addition for us,” Marinatto said in a report. “They're a program steeped in tradition and prestige, and would be a welcome challenge to contend for the conference championship year in and year out.”

With Boston College out of the ACC, that left commissioner John D. Swafford one team short of a conference. He began scouring the southeastern region for a team that would fit into his conference and challenge the likes of Virginia Tech and Florida State.

Swafford's invitation was sent out to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, where Carolina University had recently established a football program. While the Athletic Director at Carolina wasn't available for a comment, head coach Matty Nokes was.

“This is a great opportunity for us as a program to join a big name conference such as the ACC. I feel that we bring a lot of spirit and excitement as an up-and-coming football program, and we have the confidence to come in and compete with these great teams.”

Probably the most intriguing aspect about the Carolina football program is something that's more commonly seen in high school football: players that play offense and defense, otherwise known as 'iron man'.

“I understand the issues of having a team of players that play both sides of the ball, such as having the vitality to complete an entire season, much less a whole game,” replied Coach Nokes when asked about the controversy over having an 'iron man' team. “However, my guys are a talented bunch, and they are dedicated to the game of football. We'll be exiting to watch, that's for sure.”

2011 Carolina Cruisers Preview

#5 - Gavin Todd (76)
QB/S: 6' 4” 200
Though he is listed as both a quarterback and strong safety, Todd is going to be expected to call the signals for the Cruisers offense. Not a threat to break 20 yard runs every down, but has the athleticism to extend a play with his feet. Good accuracy, but doesn't have spectacular strength for deep passes.

#43 – Jonathan Taylor (78)
TB/S: 6' 0” 215
A bruiser style of back, Taylor prefers contact and running defenders over, but has decent lateral speed to break outside. He's also a capable receiver option out of the backfield. Defensively, however, he's mediocre at best.

#89 – Junior Washington (78)
FB/OLB: 6' 0” 245
On offense, Washington's role will be as a lead blocker to open up holes for Taylor, but may see a few carries during the season. Decent enough hands, might catch a few passes on occasion. A reliable defender with good speed on the outside. If the ball is near him, expect Junior to make a play on it.

#49 – Cameron White (68)
FB/OLB: 6' 3” 250
A true utility guy, White will see time anywhere from a fullback or tight end, to any position on the defensive front seven. A jack of all trades, basically.

#12 – Nick Nicholson (77)
WR/CB: 5' 10” 180
Don't let his smallish size fool you, Nicholson is a tough kid who's not afraid to go over the middle. He has great hands and can be counted on to make those tough catches in the middle of the field. His knowledge of routes help him in man-to-man coverage on defense, and has the leaping ability to break up passes.

#86 – Buster Washington (73)
TE/MLB: 6' 5” 250
Primarily a blocking tight end, but has possession receiver skills, giving Todd a big target over the middle. His lack of speed keeps him from playing outside linebacker, but is decent in run support.

#74 – Raymond Trudeaux (77)
LT/DE: 6' 6” 285
A balanced tackle, but slightly better in run blocking with okay footwork. As a DE, he's a good run stuffer and has a decent pass rush.

#63 – Bubba Trudeaux (77)
LG/DT: 6' 4” 325
The twin brother of LT/DE Raymond, Bubba is more of a pass blocker than a run blocker, with less than stellar footwork. His size makes him a good plug on defensive tackle, plugging any running lanes up the middle.

#72 – Carson Whaley (77)
C/DE: 6' 4” 275
A serviceable center, but nothing to really write home about. Doesn't really have pull-blocking speed, but can open up holes on runs up the gut. On defense, he's average across the board. Nothing spectacular about his game there.

#62 – Rick Dundee (70)
RT/DT – 6' 4” 310
Doesn't possess the speed and quickness to help on the outside, but has decent strength and footwork to help out on inside runs. Average on defense, is capable of putting pressure on the quarterback at times.

#94 – Zack Spruill (75)
LE/RT: 6' 5” 270
Doesn't have great speed, but his strength lies in powering through opposing lineman, and has the pursuit to wrap up scrambling quarterbacks and running backs should they get away. As a tackle, he's balanced, but not great.

#99 – Thomas Hughes (72)
DT/RG: 6' 2” 300
A run stopper with good strength, but has trouble wrapping up tackles at times. An average guard with okay speed and quickness to help outside on blocks.

#92 – Connor Tillman (78)
DT/RG: 6' 5” 325
See Hughes, but a better right guard on offense.

#46 – Kraig Kimball (77)
OLB/TE: 6' 4” 240
Known more for his skill in coverage with his speed and agility rather than a run stuffer. A serviceable tight end, has decent hands and can block if needed.

#41 – Todd Taylor (78)
MLB/TB: 6' 3” 245
An athletic body that can do a little of everything on the field. He's also a solid tailback when asked of him.

#14 – Christopher Johns (73)
CB/WR: 6' 2” 180
A balanced corner across the board, can man up, zone, and press with equal efficiency. Johns is more of a fourth option at receiver, and might catch a pass if the 1 and 2 guys are covered.

#37 – Cooper Tillman (77)
CB/WR: 6' 0” 190
A big time speed guy, Cooper can match up with opposing receivers well and keep up with them. His speed will also give him playing time as a running back on tosses and sweeps, as well as the return game.

#24 – E.M McBriar (72)
FS/WR: 6' 3" 200
A good zone coverage guy with the leaping ability to break up passes. A serviceable receiver, but not game changing.

#17 – Brandon Hughes (70)
SS/WR: 6' 0” 195
Hughes is a physical safety who thrives on slamming his pads against opposing receivers, jarring the ball out of their hands. At best, he's a fifth option at receiver, so chances are he won't see much offensive time.

#85 – Matt Eckert (80)
K: 5' 11” 170
Has the boot to nail longer field goals, but is inconsistent in his placement.

#15 – Toby Washington (80)
P/QB: 6' 1” 185
He's not the type that can consistently pin a team deep in their own territory, but has a big leg to drive the ball deep. His low speed keeps him in the pocket, and will have to rely on his smarts to be an effective quarterback.

Coach Matty Nokes has issued in a public statement that he will accept applications from potential walk-ons to play for the Cruisers. After reviewing all applicants and holding workouts, Nokes has accepted the following players:

An average run blocker, nothing that pops out. Nothing noteworthy on defense.

#6 – Dane Lewis (64)
WR/S: 6' 0” 175
Added for wideout depth, will more than likely compete with Brandon Hughes for the #5 receiver spot. Not expecting too much out of him on defense, either.

#1 – Darius Williams (64)
OLB/TB: 5' 11” 205
Just another addition for depth.
