More things change, more things stay the same!

High percentage of goals scored on "dekes" against the goalies.
AI D like Niedermayer getting out of his skates by deke.
Cut scene looking exactly the same as NHL 11.

    Thanks for that!

      Re: NHL 08 Montage!

I've owned every single EA NHL title since NHL Hockey on my 486DX PC, so of course I'll plunk down my money again this year. That being said, to see how little the presentation has changed in 4 years since '08 is just embarrassing. Let's look at that video:

      - National anthems removed. Why? Just leave them in EA, if people don't like them they can just skip them by pushing a freaking button.

      - Same stupid NHL, NHLPA and EA logos on the ice. If you can't be bothered to find corporations willing to let you advertise for them for free in your game, at least make up a couple and put "something" different on the ice. Ever heard of verisimilitude EA? Same goes for the boards. Speaking of which -->

      - To this day they still haven't fixed the color matching of the board logos. (the white in the rectangle logo texture doesn't match the white on the boards, so it's painfully obvious that you're looking at a texture that's rendered on top of the boards, instead of an ad that's part of the board). This should take 2 minutes to fix in photoshop. Hell send me the files I'll do it for free.

      - Of course the arenas and scoreboards are still the same, no need to elaborate on that.

-The play-by-play commentary is *identical*. For shame EA. For shame.

-Almost all the off-play animations are the same, for ex: the goalie going post to post before game start, goalie touching the posts with the stick at the end of the period, goal celebrations, etc.

-Goalie masks. Yes I understand that EA can't/won't get the licensing rights for the current designs. But last time I checked, EA has graphics guys on payroll right? How long would it take them to come up with a couple updated masks per team that look close enough to the real ones? A couple hours per team maybe? Is that too much to ask for in *four years*?

      ------

On the plus side, those awful rock-em/sock-em robot style fights are gone. Granted the first person fights are bad but they don't suck the big one nearly as much as the old fights.

First couple of seconds into the video and you shake your head seeing that intros were better in 08. Oh, but wait, having the Sharks come out of a shark head and the Oilers of a oil rig completely fixes it in NHL12... smh

I personally would bet money that the Sharks and Oilers will be the only teams with the fancy new custom intros and everybody else will get shafted.

Heck there will probably still be color commentary about stuff that happened in the 08-09 season.

If I have to hear about Montreal having done a great job hosting the all-star game or Brian Burke being the new GM in TO for another year I'm gonna lose it :-)

I think it's time for a change when you watch a video of NHL 08 and it could easily pass for NHL 11. I've bought this game the past 10 years now and I'm done. NHL 12 looks pretty much the same.

For me, this game was the peak of the current-gen releases. I played this game all the way until NHL 09 came out. Was it perfect? Nope. But the gameplay was the most solid that it has been in this series on the 360/PS3 systems -- as of late they add new items but ignore fixing other glaring issues. Perhaps the biggest plus was increasing the difficulty level actually (gasp) improved the CPU AI instead of juicing the CPU so that they score 5 goals on 15 shots (with most coming in the 3rd period).

                  Re: NHL 08 Montage!

Cool video. However, I am actually annoyed watching it. Like many of you, I've bought the game every year since the original NHL Hockey on Genesis. I was 11 years old at that time.

I probably started checking out video game message boards around 2000/2001. You can get a grasp on the concensus of what we as consumers want out of a game by reading year in and year out what works and what doesn't work for people.

I now have little faith that EA does this. I used to think the NHL dev team(under Littman) did a great job of supporting their game. However, this past year, it seemed like the tuner sets did little to nothing to make the game play any better. EASHL is a mess, there is nothing realistic about it. The CPU AI is horrid, as are many gameplay mechanic choices. The GM is probably the most vanilla expierience in franchise modes in the current gen.

What really saddens me is how little EA has done in terms of presentation since 08. I mean, really? Do they watch NHL hockey? How hard is it to represent a TV style broadcast? How hard is it to record a few new lines of commentary?

Like most of you have said- it seems like they are totally focusing on all the wrong aspects of the game, and trying to create new gimmicks, instead of fixing what is wrong.

The final blow might be the latest "big announcement". Legends do nothing in terms of changing how we play the game. We've barely seen nor head anything about this feature. However, I am willing to bet what little I own that it is just another stupid gimmick, that most true hockey fans will look at once, or not at all.

Give me a solid game of hockey, with some great presentation and I will be happy. Don't worry about ultimate teams, legends teams, weird colored "gimmick equipment, how you can milk the most money out of a consumer with extra's like boosts and equipment slots.

Just make a game that plays good, fun, realistic, diverse, hockey. Thank you.

                    Re: NHL 08 Montage!

We should ask ourselves one question. Are we the core buyers of this game and what makes EA more rich?

On our point of view, we see the core NHL gamer as the real guys, those who really can talk about the game since we play it for an extended time.

On EA point of view, what's the difference between someone who is buying the game the first day and play until the next one is out and the the guy who's buying it the same day but put it on the shelf after 2 months because a new game is out? In the end, the cold answer is...none! For EA, it's 60 bucks from both!

Starting from there, who could be surprise that instead of having things core gamers are asking for online leagues, more AI precisions, more sim game, etc. and the answer is things like broken stick, broken glass, goalie fights, etc.

What the damn NHL 08 shows us was that we aren't the target of EA, we aren't the people who makes EA richer. We are just a bunch of whinners never happy with a game. That's why they are getting more and more modes, gimmicks and things unreal in the game, just to get more fishes to buy the game.

Oh, one of my boss few years ago told me this : "Perception is stronger than reality. You might be working you *** off most of the time, but if some people see you acting lazy a few times, you're toasted."

Maybe EA NHL Dev. Team are working like crazy to get a game perfect and they are making it with all their hearts. Perception though is that they don't listen to things asked for years, they are lazy on the presentation side and they are entertaining futile gimmicks so that we forget what we are asking for years.

Man, just goes to show how little the gameplay and presentation has changed since NHL 08.

95% of those commentary lines are still used in NHL 11.

I guess we've got a new fighting system now, at least. Outside of that, it's like you said, the video could have easily passed for NHL 11.
