NHL 12 Legend - Borje Salming?

Okay, I didn't like the legend idea to begin with, at least not as the "big announcement"... now we have Jeremy Roenick and Borje Salming as "legends"? Very disappointing.

Bobby Orr, Paul Coffey, Scott Stevens and the EA crew picks Salming?!

Whatever, doesn't matter to me, I'm just waiting for the NHL 12 EASHL season. This legend thing was just a big hype job in my opinion.

They had to have an International guy. And while he might not be the biggest name he was a pioneer for Swedish players playing in the NHL. And I'm sure he was cheaper than Orr and Coffey.

Honestly, I am really quite disappointed in their choices so far. Of the Legends they have announced so far, the only ones I feel are even deserving of being representative of a Legend Feature are Gretzky and Roy. Bourque as well. All of the other players are great players, but you have Orr, Lemieux, Howe, Richard, Lefluer, Hull (either Bobby or Brett) Plante, Hall, Macinnis, Peter Stastny, Stevens and Coffey as you said, it is extremely disappointing to me that these players all seem to be neglected. Unfortunately, it is all too easy for me to see EA leaving some of these players out on purpose so that they can turn around and add them as payable DLC later. I'm with you. Extremely disappointing.

I don't have anything against Salming and Roenick, they we're pretty good players. My only problems is that EA call them "Legends".

You ask about Orr, Coffey and Stevens? I'm going to add to that list :

Al MacInnis
Phil Housley
Denis Potvin
Larry Robinson
Brad Park
Doug Harvey
Scott Niedermayer
Guy Lapointe
Serge Savard

These guys would come on my list before Salming. In that list, I would say that Potvin and Robinson are legends, Harvey, Niedermayer and MacInnis are border-line while the other we're pretty good D but not "Legends".

I don't understand (there might be a reason, only EA knows) how you can have a Legend mode without Orr, Coffey, Stevens and Potvin and have guys like Chelios and Salming.

If it's about licence and problems with guys like it's the case for Barkley in NBA 2K, fine. If not, then EA should change it to "Great" mode because there's true Legends are missing.

Salming may not have been the #1 choice for NA's but he paved the way for international players moving to the NHL. He's a Euro legend. Don't hate...hockey's global

At least its not a random player and has a strong attachment to hockey's history and the way the game looks today.

Eh it's good they represented a non north-american player but leaving Orr out in favor of both Chelios AND Roenick is just silly.

You have to remember, they have to sign a contract with all these former stars. They can't just pick and choose who they want. Having the rights to the NHL license does not give them rights to all players in the past.

As a Swede I'm of course proud to have Salming up there, but quite surprised.

When this legends thing was presented by EA I was actually thinking about Salming, as I was quite sure that they'd include (at least) one european player.
If they'd pick a Swede, sure Salming is the only choice but still I can't help to think about the old Soviet KLM lines... But then again, those guys maybe did better on the national team than they ever did in the NHL.

What about Jari Kurri?

It's all politics I guess... I think people need to think of these 9 legends as a taste of what to come.
They put these 9 guys in here to make as many people as possible happy... players from different teams, different positions, different players types, different eras, and different continents.

I think this mode is going to have some DLC available... meaning, 3 months after release some of the names if seen posted around here will be available.

Not that I'm agreeing with Salming, but there's not that many out there.

Maybe Viacheslav Fetisov, he was voted to the IIHF Centennial All-Star Team, he got the most votes of all players (beat out Gretzky, Tretiak, Makarov, Kharlamov and Salming; who all are in the Team), its not that I don't like Salming, but I would've put some other European player, Peter Stastny/Jari Kurri/Pavel Bure/Fetisov to replace him if they REALLY needed an European.

It is both tragic and sad to read about people that are not avare of one of the greatest defensemen of all times in NHL. Just a message to you little kids: There were an existing world also before you were born and started to know about things.

I think it just says it all how big Börje is as a LEGEND hockey-player. Sweden is playing Canada in the Canada Cup 1976 and the game is played in Canada, although, Salming gets longer och more loud ovations than Bobby Orr and the rest of the Canadian team members when they are announced by the speaker.
It were just the same in Swedens first game of the tournament when Sweden played USA. Salming got a 5 minute long standing ovation at the beginning of the game. And then, when he scored the first goal of the game, the crowd in the stands just went bananas. The roof of the arena were nearly to come off and that for a player that played for a rival team. When USA scored, the crowd on the stands werent as loud as when Salming scored.
I think just that says it all how big Salming were and still are.

I hardly doubt if even Peter Forsberg or Sidney Crosby could have done a goal like that.
I rest my case...

So the choice of Salming was a very good one and very well done by EA! And looking to economical issues - many people here in Sweden will by the game just because of he is in the game. I recon that EA will sell about 10 percent more games just because of Borje is in the game. And outside US and Canada, Sweden is by far the biggest market for this game. And correct me if I am wrong. EA:s main goal is to make money, right?
