How do coaches defend this is real life?

Im sure we've all done it:

Slot receiver, matched up on an outside linebacker, runs a go.

LB plays press for about five yards, and then passes the receiver off as he settles into his hook (yellow) zone.

You then fire a bullet to the slot receiver, behind the LB, for a relatively easy completion.

My question is this: how do coaches defend this play in real life?

Admittedly I don't have an experts knowledge of strategy, but from what I know I can't fault the LB's technique.

Shade a safety if they are in zone to keep an eye on the mismatch.

If you did it over and over again they could do a few things:

      1. Bring the safety up to meet the receiver as he passes the bump from the LB. This leaves you open to fly routes, though.

      2. Peel a DE into pass coverage to play zone where you hook.

      3. Most probable: stop playing bump and run and play tight defense on the WR.

Fair point, but I would still back myself to hit that pass 9 times out of 10 even with safety help. Basically I'm trying to understand why there seems to be so much more space in the game than in real football. Because to me it's not immediately obvious what the defence is doing wrong in the game.

LB in real life would carry that vert until he had an underneath threat in, NCAA the LB just carries it to an arbitrary point and then hands it off to the Safety. Problem is in the game the safety backpedals so when the LB only carries it to a certain point it creates a big gap in coverage. That being said it is not totally unrealistic, in real life If the LB is real flat footed and doesn't carry routes well this is just "pop pass" the Tim Tebow jump pass works on this concept, get the Lb to step up and hit that quick route behind him. In the game you can do it over and over but in real life that LB would adjust and carry the vert more.

the coaches will see the the personnel change and counter with a nickle or dime package. you would rarely see this mismatch with a competent coach. now a common mismatch would be a running back on a linebacker or very athletic tight end on a linebacker.

Re: How do coaches defend this is real life?

Well, the first thing would be to get a LB off of a WR and put a DB out there.

After that, I'd have my guy 5 yards off and backpedaling with the WR and force them to cut the route off underneath. Keep the guy in front of you, always. You could cheat a safety (Robber defense), but that opens you up to a quick stutter step and a deep seam route.

If the problem is that big, I would just get out of zone and run man with inside leverage. That would eventually open you up to out routes, corner routes or double moves but it would make them think twice about the quick seam behind the LB.

You are not going to see too many LBs pressing a WR. It is a mismatch to begin with so the LB is not going to further the mismatch by pressing. Second, as was said above, he will not just let him go and cover an empty zone. And as was said above, in the game the FS/SS drop too far. They just keep dropping back forever and create big gaps.
Well said. If I want to keep the same personnel on the field, you might swap some assignments. I often play against 3 WR sets with my base 4-3. I run a cover 1 and assigne the safety to that 3rd WR (I flip my defense based on which side of the field the WR is on).

Doing this leaves the LB free to cover a short zone, but generally I'll blitz him so that Safety doesn't have to cover for too long ;-)

Re: How do coaches defend this is real life?

In this game there are a lot of glitchy collisions that shouldn't be happen. Namely when two routes intersect. The Slants play out of the Ace package being a common one. When the two players intersect at the middle of the field watch the replay, usually one of the secondary players will get stuck and then pinball out after the Wideout is yards ahead of him safely.

Also there are a few miscues that the game has that normal football doesn't. In real life having a safety play a loose coverage on the wideout lining up against a LB will usually be sufficient. But you tend to see defenses fix their coverage if the LB is quick enough to realize he is on a WR and if he believe he will get burned he will call it out and if the defensive captain or whomever has the right to, gets on it soon enough he can audible the coverage to make the LB spy or blitz and the S to pick up the WR around five yards up field. The coach rarely will draw up a play that forces a LB on a WR.

If u shade a safety it would help the coverage ...

I have to disagree with that. There is less space than in real football. The player models are just a bit too large in relation to the size of the field.

This isn't a real life solution to the problem, but If I notice a team is running a lot of 3 WR sets while running and throwing the ball out of this formation I use formation subs on a 3-4 set and put my best coverage LB (if i have a good one) and ROLB and a safety at LOLB, or just 2 safeties at OLB.

This basically turns it into the 3-2-5 defense, but it gives the defense better spacing to defend the run with 5 db's on the field. I use this because I always seem to get run all over if I am in a 3-2-5 because the spacing is so wide.

I need more info to make a call. What personnel package is on the field? Is this 2 back 1 TE, with 2 receivers? Is it 1 back 3 receivers and a TE?

A previous poster had it right, the backer would collision the crap out of the slot and get depth- until the backer sees something shallow. When I'm teaching linebackers zone coverage- I talk about getting depth if nothing is in front of you. Routes aren't run in a vacuum. If that slot is running a go- chances are he's trying to clear the backer out to run a crossing route underneath or blow the top off the coverage. It also depends on the coverage.
