    PS3 Resolution / GFX Problems

**EDIT** Check the last post to see my resolution to this problem!

I picked up Madden 12 for the PS3 yesterday, and I think I have an issue with the resolution and overall graphics, hopefully someone can clue me in as to how to resolve this....

The back of Madden 12 says the game goes up to 1080P, and my PS3 is set for HDMI-->Automatic (720P/1080i/1080P) Mode. However, when I launch the game, it reverts to 720P mode and there is nowhere in the game I can change to a higher resolution.

Is there anybody out there who can POSITIVELY CONFIRM they are running at 1080P mode? I say POSITIVELY because there are so many people who are inexperienced with TV resolutions and just assume they are running at 1080P....press the Info or Display button on your TV to bring up its menu and confirm its at 1080P, please.

How do I get my Madden to run at 1080P mode?? I am using a Visio 55" 3D LED LCD TV (XVT3D554SV) (http://www.amazon.com/XVT3D554SV-55-.../dp/B0045TYDXC) and I have verified that it runs other games in full 1080P glory...but this one it wont.

I also have an issue with the overall graphics. It is a bit hard to explain, but it just seems the overall Framerate of the game is running about 20-25fps rather than the typical 30-60fps of most recent games...it reminds me of PS2 games where the screen would visibly refresh and it would give you a headache.....now, dont get me misconstrued, it is NOT that bad, but it just seems to be slightly glitchy and there is also a LOT of clipping that occurs during the presentation mode. Is anybody else experiencing this?

I have a few features on my TV that I have also checked to make sure....there is a Game Mode (Disabled), Smooth Motion Effect (Off), Real Cinema Presentation (Precision), Noise Reduction (Medium), Color Enhancement (Rich Color), Adaptive Luma (Extend), Film Mode (Auto), Smart Dimming (Off), Ambient Light Sensor (Off)

Can anyone help me out with the two problems I have? Much appreciation, and GO CHARGERS!!!

The 1080p can only be done from the ps3 menu. From the settings then display menu. Default means that all 4 options are checked

    480
    720
    1080I
    1080p

This allows the game you playing to select the correct resolution for thst game.

Disregard the back of the game box saying 1080p

That is just advertisement, the game can be forced to 1080 by checking 720
    And 1080I

But since the game is native 720, the ps3 will actually force a lower resolution 640p to display even though your remote info key shows 1080p

Why? Because the ps3 does not have s dedicated upscale chip like 360 which upscale to 1080p without forcing a lower then 720 resolution.

Bottom line you should leave all checked and play with what the ps3 selects for said game.

Actually, to force 1080p, you have to UNCHECK 720p and 1080i.

Yes, I have all these checked as I stated above in my post....but I am just not understanding this right (let me see if I get this)

        1) Madden 12 was designed as a 720P game (and ported to PS3 from XBOX??)
        2) XBOX has a dedicated scaling chip that will allow a 720P game to be upscaled to 1080P (PS3 Does not...)
        3) In order for a game to be in 1080P, it will have to be designed in 1080P (like GT5)

        Correct so far???

Now, you say that I can force 1080P by checking 720P....how?? I have all checked just like you mentioned, and the PS3 menu runs in 1080P, but then the game lowers to 720P...so do I need to uncheck the option for 720P in order for it to force 1080P???

        Thanks

You must uncheck 720 and 1080i in order to force 1080p but once again, why would you if you are doing more harm then good

Uncheck all but 480p 1080p. Problem is usually 720p is best on PS3 for games.

The guy who responded above was 100% right with what he said about the PS3's scalers

            GT5 defaults on 1080p.

Re: PS3 Resolution / GFX Problems

Ok, understood....Maybe I will just leave it at 720P......
But now, can you help explain why I am getting the low framerate, glitchy graphics on the game? I also play GT5 which has fast action, and that game looks sexy as hell...but this just seems glitchy.
Some of it is definitely the game (poor design) but some of it seems to be my TV??!?!? I turned off all those settings like I mentioned but it just doesnt seem right.......I will look into it more today and let you all know if i can get it to work better, but I would love some more feedback about the TV options or why its glitchy. Thanks!

So should I or shouldn't I force 1080P? What will show better?
                Because I can!

I am taking a chance here and say they are saying NOT to force 1080P, but I wonder if it will just be up to the person and their opinion of what looks better.

GIANTS: What about this "Game Mode" that my Visio has?? I have heard this introduces lag, but isn't that Counter-Productive to creating such a feature???

Re: PS3 Resolution / GFX Problems

I'm playing on an Asus VE278Q, hooked up via HDMI and using the auto settings in the PS3 menu. I say that just as some sort of qualification. I can confirm that yes, the game is outputting 720p. And yes, you can un-check resolutions under 1080p (accept for 480) and it will output a 1080p signal. But it is absolutely far worse visually than the native 720p (so yes, the information the folks above have stated is in fact true.). I played one game yesterday before scouring all options to make it look better.

I joined this site just to see someone's screen-cap of their display to check if they were seeing what I'm seeing. I luckily already knew about the native 720p resolution (former X360 owner), so I didn't spend all that much time toying around with that. The problem I have, is that the graphics (player models, stadiums, images, etc.) look incredibly compressed. More so than any other recent releases that I can think of. It's not a screen resolution problem either. Even when putting my monitor in 1:1 (meaning it doesn't scale the video to screen size), it's still riddled with what absolutely seems like compression artifacts and some jacked up dithering. It's incredibly annoying.

I'm going to play the demo later to see if it too suffers from this issue. I downloaded it awhile back but never had a chance to play, but it should theoretically be no better, if not quite a bit worse. I'll also be searching for more screens of the game from multiple sources to see if it's just something that is going largely un-noticed, or if this is specific to some of us. Damned game had me loading up all kinds of media on my ps3 and monitor to make sure my hardware wasn't going bad in some crazy fashion. I don't think I have ever held my face so close to a display for so long in my life! lol

Sports gaming on the PS3 SUCKS

......Compared to the 360 that is. I'm a sucker and went for a PS3 for the PS3 exclusive games but they don't make it worth having to look at the atrocious PS3 graphics.

At times I've wondered if I'm playing Gameday 2000.

I somewhat disagree with you Sparrow, I actually thought Madden 11 looked pretty darn good on the PS3, but Madden 12 looks weird...it still could be something to do with my TV, I will investigate more today.

I dont force any of my games to 1080p, since most ps3 games are optimized for 720p. Also, no framerate issues here. Could be something going on with your tv setup
