    Jermichael Finley

Yes, this thread is way premature, but I pose the topic anyway.

What do you all think of Jermichael Finley, the athletic receiving tight end for the Packers? Do you rank him right now with the other established top-flight tight ends in the league (Antonio Gates, Dallas Clark, Jason Witten, Tony Gonzalez)? How good do you think he can be?

I'd say he's tier 2 at this point in his career. I wouldn't say he's at the elite level just yet, but he will be. He's got all the skills needed to be the next Gates, Gonzalez, or Clark. Had he remained healthy last year, he would be Top 3 or 4, no doubt. As the season progresses, he's going to become something special.

      Really? No mention of Witten?

He's a beast, but he needs to spend more time on the field vs IR. 50% of his 4 years in the pros has been on IR.

Slipped my mind. Witten is definitely elite. I love watching that play against the Eagles when he lost his helmet and kept going, despite the team it was against.

            Agreed.

He has all the talent to become one of the elite TEs in the league, but he just needs to remain healthy and I honestly can't mention him with those names YET until he proves that. Once he does, then I have no problem with mentioning his name with the Gates' and Wittens of the world.

Finley has all the talent, but need to see some consistent results. He was on his way to a 900 yard receiving season last year, it seems like, before he got injured. 2009 was a decent year.

1-2 years of elite production and then he can be considered top 3-4.

He is an elite talent. One of if not the best in the league. His talent puts him with Gates and Witten. But the best isn't decided on talent alone. You have to perform on the field and put up numbers. He hasn't done that yet. When he does, he will then be considered one of the best.
When rookie Randall Cobb was told by this U.S. Marine that he was a big fan of the wide receiver, Cobb said, “I think I’m a bigger fan of yours.”

As a receiving tight end Finley has been phenomenal when healthy, but the problem is he just hasn't shown that he's capable of playing an entire season yet. Even though his receiving skills are important, he has to show consistency and better blocking skills, in my opinion.

However, much kudos goes to McCarthy who gets the most out of his talents by using him as a receiver.

If anyone needs a TE after this year, then just follow Finley's progress(especially if he's healthy) this year because I'm almost certain he won't be a Packer next year.

They might tag him? And I wouldn't be surprised if Ted Thompson didn't at least throw an offer his way.

But yes, at this point, I'm almost expecting Finley to not be in green and gold next year.

Why's that? Is he unhappy there or something?

There is just not enough footballs to go around.

Jennings, Nelson, Jones, Driver, Cobb, Finley, Starks, Grant...and even Kuhn

They ALL expect to be involved in the offense every game, and with Jordy just getting a 3 year extension it appears Finley could be the odd man out, and it doesnt help that he is definitely a diva in the making. Reminds me a lot of how Javon Walker acted the year before he got hurt (I loved Javon btw).

I haven't seen anything diva like from him. From everything I've seen, he (and his family) like the city, he fits in well, is an important piece in the offense.
                            I think he stays.

Actually, Finley just had some quotes from yesterdays game that could be construed as divaesque.

He wasn't happy that he was double-teamed 80% of the game. To me, he's all about the stats in a contract year.

Plus, why would the Packers pick 4 TE's over the past 3 yrs in the draft? I think they are planning for the day when Finley leaves.
