Purpose of Plate Discipline in RTTS?

    Long time no talk.

Love RTTS but have always wondered about Plate Discipline attribute in the mode. What good does it do me to increase it if I the user am in control of how disciplined I am as a hitter.

Is there any value to increasing the attribute if I play out every AB, or is it only useful if I am summing some games so my virtual self will stay more disciplined?

As I understand it, it only falls into play if you sim.

Maybe it helps you hold up more check swings.

I think it definitely helps in increasing check swing success. But your own discipline and stick skill are far more important.

Don't necessarily believe it, but I've read that the game uses a formula to decide borderline strike/ball calls from the umpire, and that this formula involves the batter's Plate Discipline.

All assuming you have all the "variant" options turned on.

I'm nearly certain it factors into check swings. I'm the sort of person who twitches on the button with nearly every single pitch. Early in my RTTS (playing every game) my check swings were called strikes almost every time. Now in my 4th big league year with DISC over 80, it's rare that I get a check swing strike.

Im absolutely 100% certain that Plate Discipline affects your check swings.
I was told directly from Russell himself.

The higher your PD is, the more likely you will check your swing on a bad pitch.
The lower your PD is, the more likely you will swing through a bad pitch.

The only downside to this is if you have a low Plate Vision (PV) and high PD, you can check swing on good pitches in the zone.

                  This will help some people...

Those three attributes as well as your pitch types will influence home runs, but the rest is up to the batter. In other words, if you hang a meatball over the plate it won't matter how good your HR/9 attribute is. And if you fool a batter with a pitch way outside, it won't matter how bad your HR/9 attribute is. All the HR/9 factors are taken into account by the other attributes in combination with the pitch type and location. In simulation the attribute accounts for these factors in one number rather than splitting them into detailed components.

For hitting Con, Pwr, and PVis are the most important. There is Dis which affects check swing skill, but obviously as far as taking balls and strikes that's 100% up to the user. All things being equal, it's the pitcher's BB/9 (i.e. accuracy) which is going to determine how many walks are going to happen.

So even though both pitching and hitting have 4 primary attributes, only 3 of them are dominant in-game because batters primarily control HRs and pitchers primarily control Walks. The pitcher and batter's influence against these are handled by factors like pitch types, the user's swing decision, and other overlapping attributes.
