The Evolution of Basketball Video Games

    Hey guys,

With all of the exciting features going into 2K12 with a focus on realism being a high priority, I thought it would be cool to show this youtube video I dug up regarding the evolution of bball video games.

For everybody whining and complaining and begging for 2K to essentially recreate the entire NBA experience in real life and transfer it to a video game flawlessly, why don't we take a look and see what people were playing back in 79 to get their fix

    <iframe width="420" height="345" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/RFmzl0QD2BU" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

With this in mind, I think 2K has done a H3LL of a job. Sometimes it's hard to appreciate what we have if we don't know where we came from...just sayin!
You shouldn't worry about what others think of you, because if you knew how little they did, you would be insulted.

I feel the same way, I played every single one of those games, that brings back alot of memories lol. they should of added Hoops Basketball, Run and Shoot, Inside Drive, Lakers vs. Celtics or even Arch Rivals in the video! its actually about 10 other classics they left out but still a great Vid.

If the internet was as big back then as it is now, "we" would have still complained about pixelated headbands and accessories.

Nice video, i remember all of these games and have played them all, you missed som games that i think are a bit different like David Robinson supreme court on sega(-93) , or TV sports baskettball on Amiga (-90) it was one of the first games where you could create your own player and put skill points in different skills(damn i played that game alot)

Scary how long we have come since then

This video is missing so real classics....ya'll remember Lakers vs Celtics, Bulls vs. Lakers etc. What about Hoopz on nes or Arch Rivals....I've possibly played almost every basketball game ever made.

              p.s. Great video

We do have the right to complain...we pay 65 dollars of our hard earn money on 2k...I could see if the game was free then it would be pointless to complain

Sometimes I get the feeling on this board that gameplay fiends would be totally fine with the original Atari "Basketball" graphics as long as it played sim.

I don't think this video was meant to be an all-encompassing reflection of every basketball video game ever. Rather, it's just meant to show progress and transition through time.

Awesome vid man thanks for posting.

My first console was a SEGA Master System but I didn't get any Basketball games until PS1, funny I remember back then being like yo if you squint your eyes playing this it looks almost real. Looking at them videos now compared to what we got now and it's just like woah.

But man I'd be all over them Atari games, looks dope

that is the thing those games are classics and yet had a ton of flaws now the games are 10 x's better and we complain more than ever
                      Gaming hard since 1988

I have won like 25 Super Bowls in Madden so I am kinda a big deal.

Those games bring back memories, I remember me and my older brother would play Jordan vs Bird for hours and NBA Live 95. Speaking of with I would love to see that camera angle gameplay of Live 95 in NBA2K12. Till this day I still love that camera angle.

Lololol, they missed quite a few, but I'll go through my video game history

First BBall game I ever played was that Double Dribble in probably about 1990. I remember the fake names, all that.

Next: Bulls vs Blazers in the NBA Finals! Slow *** game but had special moves and all that, loads of fun.

Tecmo Basketball, spent tons of time on this, damn did I love this game. I remember there was plays and season mode. Season mode was hella broken on recording stats though.

NBA Showdown: The full version of Bulls vs Blazers, good times
USA Basketball: Was NBA Showdown based on 92 olympics. Loved to play as Lithuania, Sabonis!

Run & Gun, NBA Jam, Arch Rivals all in the arcades at this time, really did love Run & Gun

NBA Inside Action with David Robinson: Looooooved this game, first time I saw PF #34, and C #32. What a heartbreaker. Marv Albert's commentary in this game was better than Madden's current! You would turn him off in options and he would say, "Not a good decision."

NBA Live 95-01: Lived on these games, every year.

Took a year off from gaming, I dunno why

NBA 2k3: OMGGGGGGGGG way ahead of its time. It did things that 2k only started bringing back in 2k10 and 2k11.

NBA Live 2005-2006: I dunno why I switched back to EA, but this was the birth of my online gaming. 2005 was the most balanced online game to date I think. Yes there was all kind of cheesing and in-accuracys in play, but there was counters for everything. 2006 introduced the moves, was decent enough offline, but completely broken online. Teams regularly shot 90% because it was on rookie mode or something. I quit EA at that moment.

NBA 2k7-NBA2k12: ITS OVERRRRRRRRRR. Games have been my life

20+ years of bball gaming, wtf is wrong with me, I'm only 25
