FAYETTEVILLE, ARKANSAS -- Ignited by a safety and a four sack performance by senior defensive end Kareem Kirby, No. 20 UAB passed their first test on the road this season, 54-28, on Saturday at No. 4 Arkansas.
UAB (4-0, 1-0 SEC) lost some defensive battles mid way through but won the war against the tough Razorbacks who battle back from a 21-7 deficit to tie the game at 28.
Once it was all said and done however, the Blazers had scored 26-unanswered points and the Travis Rhatigan coached team put away another top-notch opponent at its packed house.
"We're probably the only guys in America who felt we would come in here and grab the win. These guys accepted the challenge." Stated Rhatigan. " It was definitley a tough venue but the guys channeled their energy and focused on the task."
It was also UAB's first ever Southeastern Conference win. The Blazers will next play at #6 Auburn on September 28th after a much needed bye week. If Auburn can get past #22 Boise State on the it will set up for a huge SEC west showdowns between two undefeated teams. Arkansas fell to 2-1 overall and 0-1 in the SEC.
After UAB pulled out to a 21-7 first quarter lead that led to a 28-21 halftime lead, the Razorbacks got a 38 yard Bret Clement touchdown run to tie the game at 28 all. The pig sooie chants were loud and DW Reynolds Stadium was rocking as Arkansas seemed to have all the momentum after scoring 14 straight to tie the game. Arkansas didnt score again after that.

Arkansas was able to stall the Blazers next drive at mid field and forced a punt. A bad judgment by Razorback returner K. Ashley allowed the Blazers to down the ball inside the five yard line.
For the second week in a row the Blazer defensive line stepped up forcing quarterback Freddie Robinson to try and scramble but defense end Kareem Kirby got a hold of him and grabbed the safety putting UAB up 30-28.
UAB quarterback Adam Dyks then led the Blazers on the field, and on the first play rifled a bullet in between two razorback defenders into the out stretched arms of his main target Ian Wilson who raced 72 yards for the score and the route was on. Wilson also had a 71 yard score earlier in the game. Dyks would finished 12-of-23 passing for a freshmen school record of 401 yards.

Meanwhile, UAB running backs Matthew Scott and Marcus Rutledge carried the load as the Blazers pulled away. Rutledge had 24 yards on 9 carries and a score, while Scott scored twice and had 91 yards on 18 carries. Scott's two scores put UAB up comfortably 44-28. With the game winding down the Razorbacks were forced to pass but Robinson had no luck as the Blazers clamped down the pass coverage. A third and long saw sophomore defensive tackle Marcus Leak blind side Robinson causing him to lose the football defensive tackle Brandon Richardson scooped up the ball and returned it the last fifteen yards for the score as the blazer sideline celebrated the fumble return capped the scoring and UAB saw themselves up 54-28.

Wide receiver Matt Ford was Dyks's favorite target, leading the way with six catches and 119 yards it was Ian Wilson however that racked up 202 yards on four catches, Ralph Rawls added a pair of catches for 80 with a 57-yard touchdown to open the scoring. Defensively Kareem Kirby led the way with 7 tackles and 4 sacks.
" Coach just gave me the green light, lately I've been getting double teamed but with Richardson and Leak doing work in the middle it gave me some one on one opportunities and I made the most of them today." Said defensive end Kareem Kirby.
Linebacker Timi McCollum grabbed two more sacks, Leak registered a sack and Richardson and Holycross shared a sack. The Blazers got to Robinson 8 times and flustered the Arkansas passing game.
" We wanted to keep everything in front of us, for the most part we did but let Lawrence sneak away for the long touchdown." Anthony McFarland in reference to Lawrence's 73 yard touchdown catch that put Arkansas within a score before halftime. "We made the adjustments and made plays the rest of the way."
For Arkansas Robinson finished 13-22 for 202 yards and two touchdowns. Lawrence led the receivers with two catches and 75 yards and a score. Bret Clement was gettin success against the blazers rushing for 91 yards on 14 carries and two scores.
"We wished we could've kept giving the ball to Bret (Clement)." Head coach Bobby Petrino said. "But after the safety in the third quarter it kinda snowballed and just like that we were down sixteen and had to pass, top it with our terrible play on third downs and you have that outcome." Arkansas play host to Alabama next week.
RHATIGAN'S POST GAME COMMENTS: THESE YOUNG MEN GET IT, THEY UNDERSTAND WHAT WE WANT FROM THEM EACH WEEK. THAT ARKANSAS TEAM WAS A DAMN GOOD ONE, AND IF OUR DEFENSE HAD'NT STEPPED UP IN THE THIRD QUARTER I FEEL THEY WOULD HAVE TAKEN ALL THE MOMENTUM AND GOT CLEMENT ROLLING AS IT LOOKED LIKE HE WAS PICKING UP STEAM. KAREEM WAS HUGE FOR US TODAY, HE REALLY GOT AFTER IT AND MADE BIG PLAYS. HIS PLAY FOR THE SAFETY DEFINITELY SPARKED OUR BOYS AND ADAM (DYKS) THAT KID IS OFF TO A GREAT START OVER 500 YARDS OF OFFENSE IS HUGE FOR HIS CONFIDENCE. WE'LL ENJOY THIS WIN AND THE UPCOMING BYE WEEK.
