Wow I think this is amazing. This guy's videos has enlightened me during the last few days, I never knew basketball could get this deep. But this is some interesting information on how to stop Dirk.

To the mods, I know Coach Nick aka bballbreakdown has it's own thread, but I felt this find deserved it's own thread. Especiallly since Dirk has become the hot topic of the NBA and people claim his fadeaway is damn near un-guardable. Merge the two thread if you guys feel it's needed.

The way I see it, the only way you're ever really going to stop Dirk is if he's having an off game. The dude is just a great basketball player and if try to hard to guard his shot, he'll drive on you and make a play and if you defend the drive he'll knock down the jumper. If he's having an off game shooting he's good enough and smart enough to spread the ball around to his teammates and get them open shots and opportunities. There's no one magical way to stop him. Just like there's no magical way to stop D-Wade or Kobe or Jordan or Larry Bird or Magic Johnson.

Dirk is a cold blooded man. The step back, one legged fadeaway is unguardable.

          Put Tracy McGrady on him...?

          or Scottie Pippen...

or make it a close game & call him a choke...

            Key to stopping Dirk Nowitski:

As he's in the tunnel before warm-ups.
As Shaquille O'Neal left the Suns practice court, he yelled out, "Alvin's the coach. We must be the Clippers. And I must be Olowokandi. Nooooo!"

Nobody currently playing in today's game can stop him. To contain him, bang him as often as you can, don't fall for any of his head/ball fakes, and know that when he drives he goes left.
Scottie Pippen was 'only' a very good one on one defender (it was his team defense that was truly great) and he didn't have the strength to shut down Nowitzki.
Who could shut him down? Dennis Rodman, Bill Russell, Dave DeBusschere, and Gus Johnson.

Those clips don't like, but neither does that fact that Dirk was posting and toasting from all angles in the WCF and Finals. Left side, right side, big defender, small defender, physical defender, athletic defender... he murdered just about everyone he faced (except Haslem, who I believe held him to a reasonably low percentage).

Very interesting video, but I don't think there's an end-all, be-all way of stopping Dirk. Maybe for a 6-game stretch in 2007, but not now.

Too easy....When Dirk gets the ball, pause NBA2K12, and then turn off the system.

                        Kenny: What's the difference?
Vic: Well, in one, one girl wins. In the other....

Back then this was possible. But now, he's already adjusted to those kinds of defense. I think it's Mark Jackson or Jeff van Gundy who also brought this thing up in one of the Mavs' games.

This is why as a fan im more drawn to basketball than football at this point in my life, you can breakdown or see things directly from the same angle that is presented on television. Im frustrated to all hell that watching football i have no idea whats going on downfield until the ball is already in the air, sometimes he's wide open and sometimes its triple coverage

yeah but he's not the same player that Don Nelson coached to hang out on the perimeter

He can actually go inside or outside now and his post game is good enough to hurt smaller defenders now as opposed to back then under Don Nelson

You won't find any SF's stopping Dirk anymore ask Ron Artest, Gerald Wallace and Richard Jefferson how that worked out for them being the last 3 SF's who were assigned to defend Dirk in playoff matchups recently

you can put a guy like Kenyon Martin or Lamar Odom on him but that doesn't really work either because eventually he just gets them in foul trouble

now teams are basically just trying to disguise their double teams and send 1-2 defenders to his blind side at the last minute but Dirk has become a very underated passer out of the double team in recent years

I think Phil Jackson and Greg Popovich said it best.....the only way your going to stop Dirk now days is to hope he has an off game because that shot is damn near impossible to defend

He's not the same player he was 4-5 years so you can't rely on things that worked at that time
