For the most part 3-4 translates to NFL dominance because it is so cost effective - the linemen don't cost much in cap space vs 4-3 linemen and OLBs aren't typically that expensive. True pass rushing ends are rare and very expensive (Peppers' contract anyone?).

In a vacuum the 4-3 is FAR more dominant defense - you can see this historically when you look at defenses that either didn't have to worry about salary or hadn't run into in their first few years - but that isn't reality in the NFL so the 3-4 is the better $$ option.
