BLAZER WEEKLY

BAD MOON RISING
BLAZERS ENTER FIRST BCS RANKINGS AT NO. 3

BIRMINGHAM, AL -- UAB checked in at No. 3 in the first Bowl Championship Series standings of the season announced Sunday evening. It is the highest debut and the highest overall position that UAB has reached in the BCS standings mid season.
"The recognition is great for our football program," said UAB head coach Travis Rhatigan. "But we are only halfway through the season and things can change quickly. We have another tough road opponent this week at Kentucky. That game needs to be our focus."
The Blazers are behind Iowa (#2) and conference foe Alabama (#1) The two could be heading for a collision course if they win out.

Coach Rhatigan addresses the media prior to the Kentucky game:

OPENING STATEMENT: Its been a hectic week with the media at practices, I know we're No. 3 in the BCS but that doesn't matter right now. What matters is going back on the road to play a Kentucky team looking to play spoiler. We know they havent had the type of year they would like at 1-6 but these kids are on scholarship two and on any given Saturday anything can happen. They turn the ball over a lot so we need to make sure they keep doing that. I like what we've been doing on defense. Dyks has looked good this week at practice but we may slowly hold him back some. He started off strong but has thrown a lot of interceptions, with the success of our running game we're gonna give Dyks ideal situations to throw the ball.
We're back on the road again this week and Like how the guys handle that. They are real mature about being on the road and no its always a business trip. We'll have a walk through tomorrow before heading out on Friday.

ON TO THE NEXT:
#4 UAB (7-0) AT KENTUCKY (1-6)
1pm Kick-off
Common-Wealth Stadium
ESPNU Broadcast

The Blazers hope to not fall into the trap Kentucky is setting up with their 1-6 record. A local Broadcast as well as a bad Kentucky team may have UAB looking past the Wildcats. For the most part UAB defense hasn't slept on any opponent this year as they continue to be in the top 15 defenses in the country led by Linebacker Timi McCollum. Matthew Scott looks to have finally gotten back to last season's form and looks to carry the Blazers past Kentucky. Kentucky has been looking for consistency, quarterback A. Ricks has been anything but throwing for seven interceptions and only four touchdowns. In seven games he hasn't even eclipsed 1,000 yards passing. Kentucky will hope D. Pollard can get some room against this stingy run defense if Kentucky is to keep it close.
