Do YOU like the challenge or to dominate?

I've noticed a lot of people on here (some fairly new to the game, some not) that will play a closed legacy and in about 2 seasons they are dominating. I've seen guys play like 6 seasons with some crap team from the Big West and get to the final four like 4 times before taking a new job. Personally, I really dislike that way of playing. There is no real challenge to that and to me it feels like doing that would be taking out the best part about competition: The competition. It also takes out the realism of a small time coach grinding it out for years before getting to a mid-major etc.

So I have a question for you guys: Would you rather make a final four or two as a small time coach and get a major job or make the sliders challenging and actually go through the grind of being a small time coach where every single game has a huge impact?

I'd love to see what feedback you guys may have

I'm in the realism category. When it's more challenging to make the tournament, it feels that much better when you do make it. I finally won a tournament game in Year 5 of my legacy and it felt so good.

I have been enjoying my run as Toledo. I went 20-10 year 1 and had to win my conf. tourny to make the dance it was a hetic 3 games that made it so much better when I made it. To top it all off I upset Vanderbilt in round 1 76-67 they beat me earlier in the year and when I went to round to and took on #14 seeded team (forgot who) that upset Purdue they started the game 8/8 from the field where I was 0/6 and held an 18-0 lead I ended up losing by 4 and my season was over. Year 2 I am looking good but, it will still come down to winning my conferance tournament.

I have won like 25 Super Bowls in Madden so I am kinda a big deal.

I love the challenge which is why I took the worst team in the game, Grambling State with a 58 overall rating, I'm playing MOP with 20 minutes half so I know its going to be challenge, plus there's the fact that I lost by 80 points to Texas in my debut game >_<

Realism. If I want to dominate I'll take an elite program and run that way but when I go through career mode I want to keep it realistic as possible. If that means I get fired, so be it.

I definitely want realism. If I'm using a team like Idaho State, I don't mind taking my share of beatings, especially against the big boys. The occasional upset is so much sweeter whenever you are coming off of a 25-30 point embarassment at home in my opinion. I've always had more fun using the underdog and trying to create Cinderella magic rather than using a perennial Top 25 team and dominating most of my games. I would take a 16-17 win season with a mid-major or small conference school over a 30 win season with powerhouse anytime.

I'm not sure if I'm on the other side of the spectrum or not. I like to win, but I also like feeling that I earned it. So even though I just came within a eyelash of winning it all with Vermont, it felt very earned. The recruiting gods smiled on me in this legacy and by year 4 or 5 we were ready to compete on a national level. It would feel cheap if I took a 60 overall team to the dance and just dickstomped every team by 30. I've honestly tried it that way, and it's not as fun.

Usually when I take over a terrible team my first major goal is playing the conference tourney to make an NCAA bid. Even if I sneak in as a 16 seed, it feels like an accomplishment. However, if my team sucks and I'm about to go up against a 95+ rated team, I'm probably just going to sim the loss and avoid ripping my hair out.

I've done closed legacies where I was fired after only a couple years because I just couldn't recruit anyone and the team loses 90% of their games.

I'm willing to admit though that I've become so frustrated with being dominated that I've turned the 3 point shooting up to 100 just to make a ridiculous comeback. It's probably only happened 2 or 3 times in history, and I feel like **** afterward because I should've just accepted defeat. That's often the end of my legacy because I basically cheated the game and need to restart playing straight up.

Re: Do YOU like the challenge or to dominate?

I like to think of myself as a program builder. Started off at UC Riverside, got to 2 NCAA tourneys and 1 Elite 8 in 3 years, and got offered a job by North Texas who was coming off an 8 win season IIRC. Then turned them around, but didn't win the NC there until my 4th year there when I finally built my squad fully. Lost in the Final Four the next year and decided it was time to leave UNT.

Then I could have went to UNC, my dream job, but decided I still wanted a challenge and went to Wake who hadn't been to the NCAAs in something like 10 years in my legacy. I got them to the Final Four my first year, but lost in the 2nd round the next year and 1st round last year. And am taking my share of lumps in the ACC, the best I've finished in the ACC is 9-7.

I like the challenge, and eventually I may go to an 'elite' job and finish my career at UNC/UCLA/Kentucky type of place. But I want to feel like I've earned it. Not that I didn't earn it after winning a NC at North Texas, but like I said, I like being a program builder and being the hunter instead of the hunted.

Nothing against those that get in and win NC within 3 years or so, but when I did win it in my 7th season overall it felt even sweeter. And now that I only have 1 and I'm in my 12th season I want to work hard to get Wake to the mountain top before I move on.

Building a program up in Coach Mode really satisfies me. I just guided Bakersfield to the Elite 8 in my 5th season and it felt great. The only 'cheapness' one could say is being in California with loads of 3 star talent available. You still have to be patient enough and do your homework regardless.

Doing it with the sticks is one thing. Coaching the guys you recruit to success is another...

Prefer to have challenging, but fair sliders. I don't necessarily feel like every game should have a huge impact. When I had a TX Southern dynasty and recruited a skilled 3* Big man, I dominated conference play in SWAC, but got spanked when I got to the dance due to lack of talent and depth. Most of the time I like building a program from a power conference (i.e. St. John's, Depaul, Michigan, etc). For some dynasties I like to play as UNC or UCLA and dominate the regular season and get several of the big recruits. I've never been able to get to a final four with without getting to a mid major at least. Won back to back titiles with Houston in seasons 10 & 11 of a closed dynasty.
