Stanford takes USC's best shot, then delivers the knockout blow
LOS ANGELES, CA - On the first play from scrimmage, Matt Barkley heaved a bomb downfield that Robert Woods pulled out of the air and turned into a 63 yard bomb. Three plays later, Barkley fired a touchdown to Brice Butler, the first offensive touchdown given up by Stanford in almost a month.
The Trojans battled the Cardinal to a stalemate over the first quarter and a half, but Stanford's resiliency and brute strength broke through late in the second quarter, as Andrew Luck led two touchdown drives and finished off a third as a result of a turnover. The Cardinal suddenly had a 38-20 halftime lead, and had broken USC's spirits, as they crushed the Trojans in the second half and marched out of the Coliseum with a 58-20 victory.
"This is the kind of game that defeats complacency," Stanford coach Brian Kudron said afterward. "We've been on such a roll lately, but that kind of dominance isn't sustainable, because there are so many talented opponents out there, eventually you're going to run into somebody who doesn't fold after the first punch. That's what happened today, and it was a test of our character, a test of our determination. And we passed it. And we'll be better off because of it."
Big games from Luck and Stepfan Taylor paced the Cardinal's offense, while the defense once again laid seige to the opponent's quarterback, sacking Matt Barkley six times.
One significant piece of bad news, however, is the loss of Chris Owusu, who went down awkwardly after a kick return in the first quarter. He is expected to miss the remainder of the season with a broken tailbone.
