Game Notes
The Cal Bears enter the Big Game a beleaguered bunch for the second straight year, and Stanford drove them into the dirt in Berkeley last year. This time around, Cal's offense is injury-riddled, and the evidence is apparent in their bleak rankings across the board. Quarterback Zach Maynard was having a decent season before going down with a broken foot. In his stead, Allan Bridgford has thrown twice as many interceptions as he has touchdowns, and is only completing 48% of his passes. This isn't helped by the absence of star wideout Marvin Jones and star tight end Anthony Miller. Spencer Hagan and Keenan Allen have tried to fill the void, and Isi Sofele and Covaughn DeBoskie-Johnson provide a decent 1-2 punch at tailback, but this is a lopsided matchup on paper; Stanford's defense should clamp down on Cal's offense with relative ease, even without nose tackle Terrence Stephens, who was injured late against Oregon.

Cal's defense, on the other hand, remains a sturdy and strong unit, ranking 3rd in the Pac-12 in total defense, 2nd in pass defense (ahead of Stanford), and 6th in run defense. They tout a 3-4 look, just as Stanford does. Their own nose tackle, Kendrick Payne, leads the Bears with six sacks. Cornerback Marc Anthony leads the conference with eight interceptions. Like most successful 3-4 defenses, Cal has two large, standout inside linebackers in Mychal Kendricks and DJ Holt, who will be key in Cal's efforts to stop Stanford's running game.
