2011 Ohio State Buckeyes Season Preview and Headlines

Tressel Out As Head Coach, Fickell Named Intern

Amid the scandal of the "Tatoo Five", Jim Tressel stepped down as the head coach of the Ohio State Buckeyes. Luke Fickell will be the interim coach through the 2011 season. "I was not informed of any information until it became public knowledge," Fickel responded when asked if he had any knowledge of the scandal. When asked what his plans were for the Buckeyes this year, he responded: "We have a goal to lead the nation in three categories: effort, turnovers, and toughness."

    "The Tatoo Five"

Terrelle Pryor, Dan Herron, DeVier Posey, Mike Adams, and Solomon Thomas are suspended by the NCAA for the first five games of the season for selling championship rings, jerseys and awards and also for receiving improper benefits from a tattoo parlor.

    Conference Shakeups

Big Ten: Nebraska leaves the Big 12 North for the Big Ten Legends division. They will be placed with Iowa, Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, and Northwestern.
Pac-12: The former Pac-10 will change its name to reflect the number of teams in the conference. They have added Colorado, from the Big 12 South, and Utah, from the Mountain West.
Big 12: Now at ten teams, the conference will have a round robin schedule and no championship game.
Mountain West: Boise State leaves behind the WAC for the Mountain West. However, it doesn't help their scheduling very much, since BYU and Utah have left the conference and TCU plans to leave after this year. Fresno State, Hawaii, and Nevada plan to leave the WAC after this season to join the Mountain West.

Re: Restoring The Tunnel of Pride: An Ohio State Buckeyes Dynasty (NCAA 12)

Don't let the Big Ten division names fool you. With the acquisition of Nebraska, the Big Ten is as strong as it has been in a while.

        1. Nebraska- The Cornhuskers will look to carry their momentum from the Big 12 to the Big Ten. The Cornhuskers will go as far as RS SO QB Taylor Martinez leads them. They have one of the toughest conference schedules in the Big Ten, but they have loads of talent and will be playing well when they approach the tough games.

        2. Michigan State- The Spartans are looking to replace three key defensive players in Greg Jones, Eric Gordon, and Chris Rucker. The offense looks good but will need consistent play from their offensive line. They have tough conference road tests against Ohio State, Nebraska, and Iowa.

        3. Michigan- The Wolverines are looking to turn around a horrible experiment with Rich Rodriguez. They hired Brady Hoke as head coach and got an excellent defensive coordinator from the Baltimore Ravens, in Greg Mattison. They return Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year, JR QB Denard Robinson, but Robinson was very inconsistent in conference play last year. Michigan should put up more than last years seven win total in 2011.

        4. Iowa- Expectations are low for Iowa this year. The Hawkeyes went 8-5 last season, which was a disappointment for most Hawkeye fans. Three of the five losses last season were by a combined total of ten points. If Iowa can learn to win close games with the young players they have, they could surprise many fans.

        5. Northwestern- Don't let the Wildcats' record fool you in the early part of the season. They have a relatively easy start to the season. However, come middle of the season, the record will reflect the true talent and skills of the team. If the Wildcats plan to make it to a fourth straight bowl game, the 21 seniors must step up and lead this team.

        6. Minnesota- Jerry Kill has been very successful at every stop while being a head coach, never leaving a team under .500. However, this is a true test, since Minnesota's players have become very accustomed to losing. If Kill wants to turn things around in Minnesota, he will have to change the mindset of his players.

        1. Wisconsin- If the Badgers do not make it to the first Big Ten Championship in Indianapolis, Bret Bielema may not return in 2012. Wisconsin has one of the best tandems at running back, the offensive line is historically good, the defense is consistent, Russell Wilson fills your need at quarterback, and the Legends Division is weak, this team has a shot at 12-0.

        2. Penn State- The only question mark on this team is at the quarterback position. All other positions are solid. If the defensive line can stay healthy, they will give Wisconsin a hard fought battle for the right to Indianapolis.

        3. Ohio State- Ohio State has a lot to overcome. With Jim Tressel gone and a tough conference schedule, things are not looking up for this team. It may get worse before it gets better. The only bright spot is Braxton Miller will get plenty of collegiate experience early.

        4. Illinois- 2011 could be a good season for the Illini, if they can avoid the injury bug at key positions. Illinois has a favorable nonconference schedule.

        5. Purdue- The Purdue Boilermakers don't have much to look forward to this season other than the first three games of the season and experienced quarterbacks. The Boilermakers lost LB/DE Ryan Kerrigan to the NFL Draft, and he was the only lineman who could pressure the quarterback. Someone on Purdue will have to step up and fill his shoes.

        6. Indiana- The Hoosiers have playmakers in SR QB Ben Chappell, SR WR Tandon Doss, SR WR Demarlo Belcher, and RS SR LB Jeff Thomas. Bill Lynch's head coaching career begins in Indiana, and Indiana fans are on his side for the time being.

              1. Andrew Luck, QB, Stanford
Luck returned for another year, surprising many fans and experts. Luck is the overwhelming favorite to win the Heisman and should win the prestigious award, pending any injuries.

              2. Kellen Moore, QB, Boise State
Moore has a chance to have be the winningest quarterback in NCAA history. No matter what the competition, 38 wins in three seasons is an excellent accomplishment.

              3. LaMichael James, RB, Oregon
James was the leading rusher in the nation last season as the Ducks advanced to the BCS title game before losing a heart breaker to Auburn. James will look to put up similar numbers this year.

              4. Denard Robinson, QB, Michigan
There was no more exciting or productive player in the country in September of last season.

              5. Justin Blackmon, WR, Oklahoma State
Blackmon is the best wide reciever in the NCAA. He hauled in 20 touchdown catches last year and hopes to dominate the college football world again this year.

Terrelle Pryor Enters NFL Supplemental Draft
Terrelle Pryor has withdrawn from Ohio State University and is preparing for the NFL Supplemental Draft. This may be a blessing in disguise, as Joe Bauserman and Braxton Miller will now earn the full time starting job.
"All of the distractions with Terrelle are now gone. The quarterback who wins the starting job will have it all season," Fickell stated at a press conference to break the news to Ohio State fans.
When asked who had the edge to be the starting quarterback, Fickell said, "It's still a very close battle."
The Buckeyes are expected to release the depth chart within the next few days.

Akron Zips vs. Ohio State Buckeyes Preview

The Braxton Miller era will begin sooner than expected.

The drama of Jim Tressel and Terrelle Pryor could have a long term impact on the Buckeyes, but you wouldn't know from the players. "We have goals to meet as a team, and we aren't going to let that drama effect us," said Andrew Sweat when asked about the team's mentality heading into the season.

Even though the Buckeyes had one of the most distracting offseasons in the team's history, the team still has high expectations heading into this game. The number six ranking will help back that statement up.

"With adversity and with different things that happened, it brings you tighter together," Fickell said. "That's the one thing you could truly say: The effort level, the energy level, is something that we've been excited about."

This matchup should get the Buckeyes started on the right foot. In Rob Ianello's first season at Akron, the Zips lost their first eleven before winning the season finale against Buffalo. Quarterback Patrick Nicely sturggled mightly last year, throwing only ten touchdowns and thirteen interception, while only completing 49.7% of his passes.

"He showed some toughness," Ianello said. "However, the quarterback situation has to improve."

Akron has lost 14 straight on the road and is 1-21 all-time against Top 25 opponents, last beating a ranked Marshall team in 2002.

The Buckeyes are 6-1 all-time against the Zips, with the one loss coming in 1894. Ohio State won the last meeting 20-2 in 2007.

Ohio State Defense Sparks Offense, Buckeyes Win, 56-17

Luke Fickell records win number one

Ohio State got off to a very slow start against the Akron Zips. The offense only accumulated 27 yards of offense until Verlon Reed caught a 19 yard screen pass from Braxton Miller to put the Buckeyes up 7-0, just before the end of the first quarter. However, the Zips responded right back when Rhyne Ladrach caught a 9 yard pass from Clayton Moore to tie it back up at 7-7.

The second quarter was all about Jordan Hall, as he ran for 104 yards and a touchdown midway through, to put the Buckeyes back on top, 14-7. The Zips responded with 2 minutes left by tacking on a field goal to make it a 14-10 game. Ohio State would get the ball back with 1:50 left before halftime. Braxton Miller led the Buckeyes down the field with his arm and his legs. He would eventually connect with Corey Brown, on a 28 yard post route, making it a 21-10 game at the half.

The Buckeyes came out of the locker room with lots of intensity. Akron quarterback, Clayton Moore, was sandwiched betweened two Buckeye defensive linemen, causing a fumble. Tyler Moeller scooped the ball up and returned it 20 yards for the touchdown, giving the Buckeyes a 28-10 lead. Jordan Hall would punch in three rushing touchdowns, one from 6 yards out, one from 1 yard out, and one from 11 yards out, giving Ohio State a 49-10 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

Early in the fourth quarter, Nick Rossi, ran the ball in for a 1 yard touchdown, to make it a 49-17 game. With such a large lead, the Buckeyes placed Joe Bauserman in at quarterback. Bauserman did not disappoint. He only threw four passes, but he completed all four of them for 63 yards, and eventually connected with Jake Stoneburner for a 6 yard touchdown pass, giving the Buckeyes a 56-17 victory.

"We started out slow, but once we got going, we looked great," Coach Fickell said after the game. "Jordan Hall had one of the best running back performances i have ever been a part of. He did an excellent job of following his blockers and finding holes." When asked who his starting quarterback would be against Toledo, Fickell responded with, "We'll have to see how this week's practice goes. Braxton did an excellent job, and Joe did good, but that was only one drive, so we'll have to see how practice goes."

I am a Miami Hurricanes fan so I'll be cheering against you in week 3, but I am defiantly following.

I have a Browns Franchise, I hope you don't mind me using the (Sports Center: Breaking News) image, I have been looking all over for one just like that. Thanks in advance man.

                        Keep up the good work.

Toledo Rockets vs. Ohio State Buckeyes Preview

Jordan Hall will look to have another big game this week

Last week, the Buckeyes showed Akron that they are still the powerhouse of college football in Ohio. However, Toledo is better than Akron on paper.

"You can't take anyone lightly and I don't think we ever do," Buckeyes defensive back Nate Ebner said. "Anyone we're going to play against, we know they're capable of anything. We understand that and have that mentality during the week."

Ohio State and Toledo have only met twice, but Ohio State has outscored them 87-0.

The Rockets are coming off of a 35-10 beatdown of New Hampshire. The Rockets showed New Hampshire why they are favored to win the MAC this year. If Ohio State takes Toledo lightly, the Buckeyes may be in for a trap game.

"Our players are excited, there's no question about it," Rockets coach Tim Beckman said.

The Rockets are used to beating BCS teams. Last season Toledo beat Purdue, 31-20, the year before that the Rockets ran over Colorado, 54-38, and the year before that they delivered one of the most shocking losses the Michigan Wolverines have ever been given, beating the Wolverines 13-10 at The Big House.

If the Rockets plan on pulling off another upset, QB Austin Dantin will have to have a big game, because the Buckeyes run defense is the best in the country. However, the pass defense is one of the worst, ranked 85th in the country. The Rockets defense must also find a way to stop QB Braxton Miller and RB Jordan Hall.

Don't expect an easy victory for Ohio State. This game will be closer than many expect.
