The Official Andrew Luck Sweepstakes Thread

Well, it looks like the Colts are the front-runners in the Andrew Luck sweepstakes. I see them going 2-14 this season, Peyton Manning announcing his retirement, and the Colts drafting Luck with the #1 pick of the 2012 NFL Draft.

I don't see Peyton retiring after this season. But I could see him being moved if the colts decide to change the staff, and rebuild the organization around Luck.

There's no moving Manning, he would have to be released.

The Colts are going to have one hell of a decision to make.

If they trade out of the top spot, they are going to get a massive haul. I heard that it might take three first-round picks to pry that pick away from them if Manning is 100 percent healthy and decides to continue his career. If that's the case, they have him for another five or six years and can stockpile their team with high round picks.

And if that's the case, the team that deals those picks will end up getting one hell of a quarterback. I am slow to buy the hype on guys, but Luck is going to be the real deal. Draft him, lock him up, and you have your franchise QB for the next 10-15 years.

It's going to be interesting to see how it all plays out.

That being said, Peyton Manning set the Colts up for success for YEARS when they drafted him. You just don't get that chance. You take Andrew Luck and you allow him to learn from one of the greatest QBs ever. Manning retires, and you're set for another 16 years.

Tight Ends, running backs, and receivers will come and go (E. James, Harrison, etc) but a franchise QB can make or break a team. Get him to learn what Manning knows (heck, bring Manning back as a coach, few know football like he does) and the colts are going to soar.

Colts could become the next 0-16 team........they get Luck........he sits behind Peyton for about two years......then takes over. He'll be the future of the team...

Indy fans, things look grim right now, but hang in there. Every team hits a rough patch while rebuilding.

Listening to NFL radio yesterday, one of the guys who had talked to Manning said that Manning himself was actually becoming doubtful of ever playing football again. He can't even play 1 hole of golf yet, I think Indy will be taking Andrew Luck and we'll likely see Manning retire.

Colts fans probably have the best possible scenario at their feet. They've been in contention ever since Peyton stepped in and it wasn't until this season where he's even missed a start.. and now they have Andrew Luck who can be another potentially great great franchise QB waiting for them. Lightning in a bottle.

Reminds me of the Spurs with David Robinson and then Tim Duncan

Why? His contract? Contracts can be reworked. If Montana can be traded than IMO Manning can be moved.

Not saying that if they draft Luck they will move, him, but if they want to make whole sale organizational and coaching changes, and give Luck the rein they have to move Manning. (or release him)

I say Indy wins the sweepstakes and takes Luck.

He sits behind Manning for a year or two depending on Mannings health. We could be seeing the next Rodgers/Favre scenario playing out.

Manning is due $28m before the league year starts in 2012, or to rephrase, before he can even be traded.

                        What's more likely to happen:
                        • the Colts pay him $28m and then trade him
                        • Manning lets that payment be deferred to after he's traded, and a team pays him $28m just for walking in the front door, after giving a kings ransom for his rights, hurting that teams chance to compete
                        • he's released before the Colts pay him the roster bonus.

Where is the motivation for Manning to even do the Colts a favor and defer the bonus? Interested teams could clam up waiting for a release, so they don't pay for that contract in addition to draft picks.

Don't know Irsay personally but the Skins gave Haynesworth his huge bonus then traded him. The fact that the Colts haven't put him on IR thus are paying him for this season, so I don't see them having a problem paying him in order to move him. Lots can happen but I don't see the 28 million being enough to stop a trade if it nets them several future draft picks to help rebuild around Luck.

Even though that the NFL radio is probably a good source, I highly doubt he retires. Color me ultra shocked if he does retire, I mean he was playing at a very high level and still can play at a high level. It's not like he's a washed up quarterback just playing for as long as possible squeezing every penny out of his contract. If he were to retire, he would be cutting his career 5+ years short imo.

How do we know he can still play at a high level? Injuries change things. That's the whole point.

There's also Wiffin for Griffin, the case for Case and ummm play horrible son for Wilson. (We need something for Wilson.)
